Notes: Conditions for maximizing resolution and signal-to-noise ratios in fluorescence scanning densitometry of separations obtained by high performance thin-layer chromatography are described. Resolution was found to be independent of most instrument parameters with a small decrease observed at wide slit widths. Signal was found to be markedly dependent on experimental parameters such as slit width, slit height, sensitivity setting, and the time constant of electronic filters. For recording chromatograms a slit width of 1.00 mm, a slit height slightly greater than the spot diameter, a low sensitivity setting (50 mV), electronic filtering, and a scan rate of 24 or 48 mm min-1 are commensurate with minimum recording time and maximum sample detectability without incurring a significant decrease in resolution.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis and Properties of Tetrakis(Perfluoroalkyl)Tellurium Te(Rf)4 (Rf = CF3, C2F5, C3F7, C4F9)Te(CF3)4 is obtained from the reaction of Te(CF3)Cl2 with Cd(CF3)2 complexes as a complex with e. g. CH3CN, DMF. It is a light and temperature sensitive hydrolysable liquid. The reaction with fluorides yields the complex anion [Te(CF3)4F]-, with fluoride ion acceptors the complex cation [Te(CF3)3]+. With traces of water an acidic solution is formed. Te(CF3)4 acts as a trifluoromethylation reagent. The reaction with XeF2 gives hints for the formation of Ye(CF3)4F2. Properties and NMR spectra are discussed. The much more stable complexes of Te(Rf)4 (Rf = C2F5, C3F7, C4F9) are formed from the reaction of TeCl4 with the corresponding Cd(Rf)2 complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Lewis-Acid Initiated Syntheses of Xenon-Oxo Compounds - a 129Xe-NMR StudyThe reaction of XeF2 with B(OR)3 yield FXeOR (R: SO2CF3) and Xe(OR)2 (R: COCF3), respectively. In the second case the intermediate formation of FXeOCOCF3 is detectable. In a solution of XeF2 and BF3 · O(CH3)2 in CD3CN the cation [FXe.NCCD3]+ can be observed. The syntheses of FXeOR (R: SO2CF3, SO2C4F9) and Xe(OR)2 (R:COCF3, COC2F5) also succeed in the reaction of XeF2 with the corresponding alkali metal sulfonates and carboxylates in the presence of BF3 · O(CH3)2. Due to the 129Xe-NMR spectra the mechanism of formation and the bond types of these partly new derivatives are discussed.
