    Notizen: Abstract An information modeling approach is used to gain an understanding of the information and decision content of conceptual engineering design. Information frameworks are presented that attempt to represent the key decisions made during conceptual design. Elements of the frameworks are derived from results from design theory and methodology and decision theory. Using a number of products, the frameworks are demonstrated in simulated design situations. The models provide an explicit, generic and consistent perspective for identifying the information content of conceptual designs.

    Notizen: Abstract  In the field of reference materials, COMAR (Code d'Indexation des Matériaux de Référence) is now internationally known as a reliable directory. In order to improve the quality of COMAR, a document which covers general requirements for the registration of reference material has recently been adopted by the Japanese coding centre, NITE. This paper describes the general requirements for reference materials and the current status of the COMAR database coded by the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), Japan. The concept of the requirements is fundamentally based on the ISO Guides 30, 31, 33, 34 and 35. Certifications of reference materials are divided into the following three categories in the newly adopted document. 1. Certifications based on the results of interlaboratory comparisons 2. Certifications in accordance with the Measurement Law 3. Certifications in accordance with the measurement results of national institutions An example of an uncertainty evaluation is also presented in the paper.

    Notizen: Abstract Objective: The database of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) held by the Uppsala Monitoring Centre on behalf of the 47 countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Programme for International Drug Monitoring contains nearly two million reports. It is the largest database of this sort in the world, and about 35 000 new reports are added quarterly. The task of trying to find new drug–ADR signals has been carried out by an expert panel, but with such a large volume of material the task is daunting. We have developed a flexible, automated procedure to find new signals with known probability difference from the background data. Method: Data mining, using various computational approaches, has been applied in a variety of disciplines. A Bayesian confidence propagation neural network (BCPNN) has been developed which can manage large data sets, is robust in handling incomplete data, and may be used with complex variables. Using information theory, such a tool is ideal for finding drug–ADR combinations with other variables, which are highly associated compared to the generality of the stored data, or a section of the stored data. The method is transparent for easy checking and flexible for different kinds of search. Results: Using the BCPNN, some time scan examples are given which show the power of the technique to find signals early (captopril–coughing) and to avoid false positives where a common drug and ADRs occur in the database (digoxin–acne; digoxin–rash). A routine application of the BCPNN to a quarterly update is also tested, showing that 1004 suspected drug–ADR combinations reached the 97.5% confidence level of difference from the generality. Of these, 307 were potentially serious ADRs, and of these 53 related to new drugs. Twelve of the latter were not recorded in the CD editions of The physician's Desk Reference or Martindale's Extra Pharmacopoea and did not appear in Reactions Weekly online. Conclusion: The results indicate that the BCPNN can be used in the detection of significant signals from the data set of the WHO Programme on International Drug Monitoring. The BCPNN will be an extremely useful adjunct to the expert assessment of very large numbers of spontaneously reported ADRs.

    Notizen: Summary Essential to the development of useful predictive models for foods is the collection of appropriate data. Within the UK Predictive Food Microbiology Program, a series of documents have been produced to aid the standardization of data collection by a number of laboratories. Documents include a protocols form, notes on experimental design, notes on the accuracy of counts by plating, the preferred method of calculating a plate count value, preferred MPN tables and the preferred methods of recording data values. These documents have proven useful in aiding collaboration between laboratories.

    Notizen: Abstract We present some new ideas for characterizing and comparing largechemical databases. The comparison of the contents of large databases is nottrivial since it implies pairwise comparison of hundreds of thousands ofcompounds. We have developed methods for categorizing compounds into groupsor series based on their ring-system content, using precalculatedstructure-based hashcodes. Two large databases can then be compared bysimply comparing their hashcode tables. Furthermore, the number of distinctring-system combinations can be used as an indicator of database diversity.We also present an indepen- dent technique for diversity assessment calledthe ’saturation diversity‘ approach. This method is based on picking as manymutually dissimilar compounds as possible from a database or a subsetthereof. We show that both methods yield similar results. Since the twomethods measure very different properties, this probably says more about theproperties of the databases studied than about the methods.

    Notizen: Summary A new database of conserved amino acid residues is derived from the multiple sequence alignment of over 84 families of protein sequences that have been reported in the literature. This database contains sequences of conserved hydrophobic core patterns which are probably important for structure and function, since they are conserved for most sequences in that family. This database differs from other single-motif or signature databases reported previously, since it contains multiple patterns for each family. The new database is used to align a new sequence with the conserved regions of a family. This is analogous to reports in the literature where multiple sequence alignments are used to improve a sequence alignment. A program called Homology-Plot (suitable for IBM or compatible computers) uses this database to find homology of a new sequence to a family of protein sequences. There are several advantages to using multiple patterns. First, the program correctly identifies a new sequence as a member of a known family. Second, the search of the entire database is rapid and requires less than one minute. This is similar to performing a multiple sequence alignment of a new sequence to all of the known protein family sequences. Third, the alignment of a new sequence to family members is reliable and can reproduce the alignment of conserved regions already described in the literature. The speed and efficiency of this method is enhanced, since there is no need to score for insertions or deletions as is done in the more commonly used sequence alignment methods. In this method only the patterns are aligned. HomologyPlot also provides general information on each family, as well as a listing of patterns in a family.

    Notizen: Abstract Biological investigations have the potential to produce large volumes of data, much of which is condensed or omitted from publications, and which may not be readily accessible to researchers outside that discipline. Bringing together in a single repository information whose common thread is the Solanaceae family gives researchers a valuable, multidisciplinary tool. The SolGenes (Solanaceae) database project, a part of the USDA Plant Genome Research Program, is meant to be such a tool. The database has facilities for handling genetic and physical maps, DNA sequences, pathologies and germplasm stocks, as well as other types of information. It currently contains tomato, potato and pepper genetic maps based on a common set of probes, tomato germplasm data including wild species and stocks, autoradiogram images of distributed probes and much more. Current efforts are focused on loading images of tomato mutants, expanding the germplasm data, and setting up a gopher server. The database software (ACEDB) provides a user-friendly, graphical interface with links between logically related pieces of information, allowing the user to view data from multiple sources with just a few clicks of the mouse. The database and software are freely available to interested parties.

    Notizen: Abstract Concurrent execution of database transactions is desirable from the point of view of speed, but may introduce inconsistencies. A commonly used criterion of correctness of a concurrent execution of transactions is serializability, i.e., the equivalence of the execution to some serial schedule or schedules. In the literature several transaction models have been used and several different notions of serializability have been introduced. In this paper, we investigate the various serializability families in the general transaction model, in the two-step model, and in the restricted two-step model. We also examine these families in the multiversion database model.

    Beschreibung: Geobiology explores how Earth's system has changed over the course of geologic history and how living organisms on this planet are impacted by or are indeed causing these changes. For decades, geologists, paleontologists, and geochemists have generated data to investigate these topics. Foundational efforts in sedimentary geochemistry utilized spreadsheets for data storage and analysis, suitable for several thousand samples, but not practical or scalable for larger, more complex datasets. As results have accumulated, researchers have increasingly gravitated toward larger compilations and statistical tools. New data frameworks have become necessary to handle larger sample sets and encourage more sophisticated or even standardized statistical analyses. In this paper, we describe the Sedimentary Geochemistry and Paleoenvironments Project (SGP; Figure 1), which is an open, community-oriented, database-driven research consortium. The goals of SGP are to (1) create a relational database tailored to the needs of the deep-time (millions to billions of years) sedimentary geochemical research community, including assembling and curating published and associated unpublished data; (2) create a website where data can be retrieved in a flexible way; and (3) build a collaborative consortium where researchers are incentivized to contribute data by giving them priority access and the opportunity to work on exciting questions in group papers. Finally, and more idealistically, the goal was to establish a culture of modern data management and data analysis in sedimentary geochemistry. Relative to many other fields, the main emphasis in our field has been on instrument measurement of sedimentary geochemical data rather than data analysis (compared with fields like ecology, for instance, where the post-experiment ANOVA (analysis of variance) is customary). Thus, the longer-term goal was to build a collaborative environment where geobiologists and geologists can work and learn together to assess changes in geochemical signatures through Earth history.

    Beschreibung: The northern Chilean Patagonia region is a key feeding ground and a nursing habitat in the southern hemisphere for blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus). From 2014 to 2019, during 6 separate research cruises, the dive behavior of 28 individual blue whales was investigated using bio‐logging tags (DTAGs), generating ≈190 h of data. Whales dove to significantly greater depths during the day compared to nighttime (day: 32.6 ± 18.7 m; night: 6.2 ± 2.7 m; P 〈 0.01). During the night, most time was spent close to the surface (86% ± 9.4%; P 〈 0.01) and at depths of less than 12 m. From 2016 to 2019, active acoustics (scientific echosounders) were used to record prey (euphausiids) density and distribution simultaneously with whale diving data. Tagged whales appeared to perform dives relative to the vertical migration of prey during the day. The association between diurnal prey migration and shallow nighttime dive behavior suggests that blue whales are at increased risk of ship collisions during periods of darkness since the estimated maximum ship draft of vessels operating in the region is also ≈12 m. In recent decades, northern Chilean Patagonia has seen a large increase in marine traffic due to a boom in salmon aquaculture and the passenger ship industry. Vessel strike risks for large whales are likely underestimated in this region. Results reported in this study may be valuable for policy and mitigation decisions regarding conservation of the endangered blue whale.
