    Notes: Summary Calculated values of the gaseous atmospheric absorption are presented for the frequency range 100 to 50,000 Mc at elevations above ground up to at least 130,000 feet, for average conditions during February and August at Bismarck, N. D. and Washington, D. C. Total radio path absorptionsare presented for tropospheric forward scatter communication links for distances of 100, 300 and 1000 miles. The total path absorptions were calculated by summing the absorption contributed by each portion of the atmosphere traversed by a radio ray passing from a 60 foot parabolic antenna resting on the ground to the scattering center and then to a similar receiving antenna. A correlation of total path absorption with the surface value of absolute humidity is developed, thus providing estimates of the range of absorption values in different geographic areas. Maps of average absolute humidity for the world are presented. Previous work on rain absorption is then combined with the present study to provide estimates of the radio power loss due to absorption expected to be exceeded 1 per cent of the time.

    Notes: Summary A number of unselected potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) clones were grown at two locations (a seed site and a ware site) in three consecutive years. The repeatability of total yield and yield components in the first two clonal years was compared with the same characters recorded in the third clonal year. Selection for yield in the first clonal year was only marginally more effective than a random reduction in number of genotypes, while selection in the second clonal year appeared to be somewhat more effective as judged by performance in the third clonal year. The inefficiency of selection in the first clonal year was ascribed, at least in part, to the inaccuracy of yield assessment as well as the “carry-over” effect of the mother tubers. Correlations of total yield were higher between different years in the same location than between different locations. Selection under growing conditions suitable for production of seed tubers tended to result in selection of early maturing clones which would not necessarily be optimal for ware growing conditions.

    Notes: Summary Grain isozyme and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) variability was examined in Hordeum spontaneum populations sampled from 27 geographical sites in Israel. Considerable phenotypic variability was observed with variants of ADH1, EST3, EST10, BMY1 and WSP detected, which are not available in the H. vulgare gene pool. Seven new rDNA phenotypes were detected in the H. spontaneum populations. Shannon's index of diversity was used to partition the total phenotypic variation into between and within population components. Most of the variation occurred between H. spontaneum populations. The distribution of both grain isozyme and rDNA phenotypes was non-random and correlated with a range of ecogeographical factors. In particular, the G phenotype of BMY1 was restricted to the Negev Desert and Dead Sea regions of Israel. Over 78% of the variation in the frequency of this particular phenotype could be explained by the number of rainy days per year and mean temperature in January. This suggests that variation at this locus or at loci linked to it may be of adaptive significance and of value in the introgression of genes controlling abiotic stress tolerance from H. spontaneum into the H. vulgare gene pool.

    Notes: Summary When insect fibrillar flight muscle is stretched it becomes more active, as indicated by an increase in oscillatory work output and ATPase activity. Using glycerol-extracted muscle it is demonstrated that this effect is periodic with a repeat of around 3% length change, independent of temperature and ionic strength. This corresponds to 38 nm per half sarcomere, the same repeat as the actin helix. Since there is also a period of 38 nm in the myosin helix the periodic change of activity with muscle length could be caused by filament sliding. This may be the basis of the mechanism of length activation.

Forn=2 these solutions interpolate between merons and arbitrary instantons; forn≧3 the situation is less clear. Various properties are investigated, both in Euclidean and Minkowski space.     Notes: Abstract For a class of the dynamically broken supersymmetric quantum-mechanical models proposed by Witten, we examine various methods of estimating the ground-state energy, including the instanton method developed by Salomonson and van Holten. We show that no existing method is entirely satisfactory, and develop a method using all stationary points of the Schrödinger potential (including those in the complex plane) in conjunction with the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method, thus combining perturbative and nonperturbative effects. Generalisations to more than one degree of freedom and to field theory are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In this second paper studying supersymmetric quantum mechanics, we concentrate on cases where supersymmetry is not spontaneously broken. This is done to further study the importance of various contributions to the ground-state energy. We perform an instanton calculation in detail and show that estimates of the ground-state energy based on the instanton contribution are poor-usually a naive zero-point energy calculation gives as good an estimate. We test the method developed in the previous paper and show that it gives good results for these cases, as before. We question the common assumptions that instanton effects are exponentially small compared to the perturbative scale, and that instanton contributions are necessarily suppressed by powers ofh.
