    Description: Animal species usually have a single sperm-storage site in the female body, but females of the squid Heterololigo bleekeri possess two distinct sperm-storage sites simultaneously. Use of two sperm-storage sites correlates with alternative male mating behaviours: large consorts guard females and place spermatophores inside the oviduct just before spawning, whereas small ‘sneaker’ males place spermatophores on the membrane around the female's mouth within the arm crown, where a seminal receptacle is present. Previous work showed that spermatophore and sperm morphology diverge between consort and sneaker males. Here we show novel dichotomous adaptations in the sperm-transfer strategy of males of this squid, associated with the use of two distinct sperm-storage sites on females. The spermatangia ejaculated from spermatophores were clearly dimorphic: all spermatangia ejaculated from spermatophores smaller than 12 mm from small sneaker males were drop-shaped, whereas all spermatangia from spermatophores longer than 12 mm from larger consort males were rope-shaped. In addition, the drop-shaped spermatangia were distinct in having a spine on their base, which might reduce the risk of it being shed from the female's body surface. Our findings suggest that existence of alternative sperm-storage sites, and related biological and environmental factors, lead to the evolution of divergent sperm-transfer strategies.

    Description: Persistent Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in hostile gastric mucosa can result in gastric diseases. Helicobacter pylori induces to express antimicrobial peptides from gastric epithelial cells, especially human β-defensin 3 (hBD3), as an innate immune response, and this expression of hBD3 is mediated by epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation. In this study, we found that phosphorylation of a serine residue of EGFR via transforming growth factor β-activated kinase-1 (TAK1), and subsequent p38α activation is essential for H. pylori -induced hBD3 release from gastric epithelial cells. We showed that this pathway was dependent on H. pylori type IV secretion system and was independent of H. pylori -derived CagA or peptidoglycan. H. pylori infection induced phosphorylation of serine residue of EGFR, and this phosphorylation was followed by internalization of EGFR; consequently, hBD3 was released at an early phase of the infection. In the presence of TAK1 or p38α inhibitors, synthesis of hBD3 was completely inhibited. Similar results were observed in EGFR-, TAK1- or p38α-knockdown cells. However, NOD1 knockdown in gastric epithelial cells did not inhibit hBD3 induction. Our study has firstly demonstrated that this novel EGFR activating pathway functioned to induce hBD3 at an early phase of H. pylori infection.

    Description: The current helicity in solar active regions derived from vector magnetograph observations for more than 20 years indicates the so-called hemispheric sign rule; the helicity is predominantly negative in the Northern hemisphere and positive in the Southern hemisphere. In this paper, we revisit this property and compare the statistical distribution of current helicity with Gaussian distribution using the method of normal probability paper. The data sample comprises 6630 independent magnetograms obtained at Huairou Solar Observing Station, China, over 1988–2005 which correspond to 983 solar active regions. We found the following. (1) For the most of cases in time-hemisphere domains the distribution of helicity is close to Gaussian. (2) At some domains (some years and hemispheres) we can clearly observe significant departure of the distribution from a single Gaussian, in the form of two- or multicomponent distribution. (3) For the most non-single-Gaussian parts of the data set we see coexistence of two or more components, one of which (often predominant) has a mean value very close to zero, which does not contribute much to the hemispheric sign rule. The other component has relatively large value of helicity that often determines agreement or disagreement with the hemispheric sign rule in accord with the global structure of helicity reported by Zhang et al.

    Notes: Abstract Rechargeable cells with lithium metal anodes have a very large theoretical energy density and are a promising cell system. However, rechargeable lithium metal cells are not yet currently commercially available. One of the biggest problems with the cells is the poor safety aspect resulting from the high chemical reactivity of lithium. We have been studying a cell system consisting of an amorphous (a-)V2O5P2O5 (95:5 in molar ratio) cathode, a lithium (Li) metal anode and an organic electrolyte in fabricating an AA-size prototype. In this paper, we report recent progress on our rechargeable lithium metal cell focusing on its safety.

    Notes: Abstract The distribution and abundance of Japanese common squid [Todarodes pacificus (Steenstrup, 1880)] paralarvae off southern Kyushu Island near the Kuroshio were examined in relation to water types in the region. Surveys were conducted in 1996 and 1997 using paired, 70 cm diameter Bongo nets. Temperature–salinity plots from 0, 50 and 100 m depths were used to assign sampling stations to three water types: inshore, mixing and Kuroshio. In total, 4103 T. pacificus paralarvae were collected at 59 of 72 stations. Catch densities at positive stations ranged between 8 and 4282 ind./50 m2 sea surface area. Catches during both years were highest in mixing waters, followed by inshore and Kuroshio waters. Total catches were highest just north of the oceanographic front at the inshore edge of the Kuroshio and declined with increasing distance away from the front. Catches of paralarvae ≤1.0 mm mantle length also peaked near the front. In both years, ≥85% of all paralarvae and ≥69% of those ≤1.0 mm mantle length occurred less than 25 km from the front. We conclude that most spawning off southwest Kyushu occurs near the frontal zone, where Kuroshio and inshore waters meet.

    Notes: Abstract  A solvated and cross-linked copolymer of N-isopropylacrylamide (IPAAm) and 2-(acrylamido)-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) was synthesized and its interaction with cationic surfactant lauryl-pyridinium chloride (C12PyCl) was investigated. The solvated copolymer exhibited a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water, which was extensively shifted to a higher temperature due to the increase of hydrophilicity introduced by AMPS. In C12PyCl solution, LCST of the copolymer was dramatically decreased due to the binding of C12PyCl to AMPS unit, forming a stoichiometric complex. However, in the concentrated C12PyCl solution, its LCST increased due to the non-stoichiometric complex formation. This phenomenon was further examined in the cross-linked copolymer, analyzed by binding isotherms. Two-step binding of surfactant was demonstrated followed by gel shrinking and re-swelling. This binding mechanism was further discussed regarding the effect of charge density and the hydro-phobicity of the main-chain backbone in terms of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Sommaire Il a été énoncé qu'une méthode de pléthysmographie d'impédance dans les mesures de courants sanguins cérébraux était une aide puissante, mais l'origine du changement d'impédance n'a pas été théoriquement clarifié. L'impédance d'électrode dans une solution saline physiologique, dans du plasma sanguin, dans le sang et dans du subcortex cérébral du chien ont été étudiées en détail. Il a été trouvé que la pléthysmographie d'impédance cérébrale, dans laquelle des électrodes du genre aiguille sont généralement utilisées, ne reflète que très rarement le courant sanguin cérébral régional. Le changement d'impédance des électrodes dans le subcortex n'a montré que les mouvements mécaniques des électrodes qui ont été induits par des déplacements de cerveau se rapportant au cycle cardiaque ou à la respiration. Le débit d'écoulement sanguin dans les vaisseaux étroits peut être observé directement à mesure que l'impédance change, lorsque des électrodes minces sont insérées dans les vaisseaux.
    Abstract: Zusammenfassung Es ist ein Bericht über ein Verfahren der Impedanz Plethysmographie in Blutstrommessungen innerhalb des Gehirns als ein wirksames Mittel gegeben worden, aber der Ursprung der Impedanzänderung ist theoretisch nicht klargestellt worden. Es wurde die Elektrodenimpedanz in physiologischer Salzlösung, im Blutplasma, im Blut und im Subkortex eines Hundegehirns in Einzelheiten untersucht. Man fand, dass Impedanz Plethysmographie innerhalb des Gehirns, wobei allgemein nadelartige Elektroden benutzt werden, selten oder nie den regionalen Gehirnblutstrom reflektiert. Die Impedanzänderung der Elektroden in dem Subkortex zeigte nur die mechanischen Bewegungen der Elektroden an, die durch Gehirnverdrängungen hervorgerufen wurden, welche sich auf den Herzkreislauf oder auf die Atmung bezogen. Die Blutstromgeschwindigkeit kann in engen Gefässen direkt als Impedanzänderung beobachtet werden, wenn dünne Elektroden in die Gefässe gesteckt werden.
    Notes: Abstract A method of the impedance plethysmography in intracerebral blood flow measurements has been reported as a powerful tool, but the origin of the impedance change has not been clarified theoretically. The electrode impedance in physiological saline, in blood plasma, in blood and in cerebral subcortex of a dog were studied in detail. It was found that intracerebral impedance plethysmography, in which needle type electrodes are generally used, seldom if ever reflected the regional cerebral blood flow. The impedance change of the electrodes in the subcortex showed only the mechanical movements of the electrodes which were induced by brain displacements relating to the heart cycle, or to the respiration. The blood flow rate in narrow vessels may be observed directly as impedance changes, when fine electrodes are inserted into the vessels.

    Notes: Abstract Time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectra of the quasicrystalline phase Al79Mn20Si1 (800 ppm Hf) and the decagonal phase (T-Phase) Al80Mn20 (800 ppm Hf) were measured using the181Hf probe. It is obtained that the structure around the center in Mackay icosahedra in the decagonal phase seems to be distorted in comparison with that in the quasicrystalline phase.

    Notes: Abstract TDPAC spectra of181Hf were measured for an amorphous alloy (Cu57Hf43) prepared by meltspinning for the first time. It is obtained that two Hf sites exist in the amorphous alloy. The short-range order in the amorphous alloy is discussed from a viewpoint of the polytope model of amorphous solids.
