Notes: Membrane fluidity of red blood cells drawn from malignant hyperthermic pigs and humans was studied using spin-probes and electron paramagnetic resonance technique. The order parameter and rotational correlation time were determined with 12-doxylstearate and 16-doxylstearate, respectively. It was found that halothane decreased both parameters, but that the decrease of these parameters in subjects susceptible to malignant hyperthermia was much greater than that in normal subjects. The differences were most pronounced at 3 mM halothane. A possibility of using blood for a non-invasive screening for malignant hyperthermia is discussed.

Notes: New prostaglandin oligomeric derivatives, termed MR-256 and MR-356, were found to inhibit the growth of murine malarial parasites, P. chabaudi and P. vinckei, within red blood cells in vivo. When mice were infected with P. chabaudi, both MR-256 and MR-356 suppressed the growth of parasites, but MR-356 had a greater inhibitory effect than MR-256. With P. vinckei, MR-356 also inhibited the growth of parasites, and improved the survival rate. The effect of MR-256 was much less. A possible inhibitory mechanism of action of these drugs is discussed.

Notes: The copolymerization of propylene with 1-butene was carried out in presence of the catalytic system TiCl4/Mg[(CH2)5CH3]2 in heptane. A transparent copolymer with a random distribution (r1 · r2 = 1,0) was obtained. The catalyst shows a considerably high activity. The rate of monomer addition was found to be independent of the chemical structure of the growing polymer chain end, which is quite different for the copolymerization of ethylene with propylene.

Notes: N - Nitrophenylchitosan derivatives were prepared by the reaction of chitosan hydrochloride with 1 - fluoro - 4-nitrobenzene, 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and p-nitrobenzaldehyde. The 2,4-dinitrophenyl derivative, which is the only product soluble in dimethyl sulfoxide and dimethylformamide, was analyzed by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. Its solution in dimethylformamide exhibits a remarkable change in color from yellow to red upon electroreduction, and the film cast from dimethylformamide solution shows similar electrochromic properties.

Notes: Glow discharge polymerizations of tetramethylsilane (TMS) were performed by the capacitive coupling of a 20 kHz frequency in comparison with those by the inductive coupling of a 13.56 MHz frequency. The polymers prepared by the former coupling were poorer in carbon and hydrogen, but richer in silicon than those prepared by the latter coupling. These two polymers showing similar infrared spectra contained CH3, CH2, CH, Si—O—C, Si—O—Si, Si—CH3, and Si—CH2—CH2—Si groups. Some physical properties involving surface energy, thermal stability, and absorption spectra in the regions of the UV and visible light were determined. This coating procedure was applied for surface hardening of a polyethylene sheet. The surface hardness of the polyethylene sheet was enhanced by a coating of plasma films prepared from TMS or the TMS/O2 mixtures. Surface hardness was determined by the pencil method and hardness was enhanced from 2B to 2H. The adhesion between these plasma films and polyethylene sheet was good even when immersed in 0.9% NaCl solution at 40°C for 10 days.

Notes: Poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres [poly(SerMA-co-MMA), poly(AlaMAm-co-MMA), poly(AlaEMA-co-MMA), and poly(AlaMAm/AlaEMA-co-MMA)] modified with O-methacryloyl-L-serine (SerMA), N-methacryloyl-L-alanine (AlaMAm) and L-alanine 2-methacryloyloxyethyl ester (AlaEMA) were prepared by the emulsifier-free emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with SerMA, AlaMAm and AlaEMA, respectively, initiated with 2,2′-azobis[2-(2-imidazolin-2-yl)propane] dihydrochloride (ABIP). The series of polymer microspheres showed unimodal distribution of the particle size (290-800 nm) in water. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy it was concluded that the amino acid moieties are located on the surface of the particles in all cases. Poly(SerMA-co-MMA) showed the most effective suppression of adsorption of proteins such as albumin (Alb), γ-globulin (Glo) and fibrinogen (Fib) among the examined poly(methylmethacrylate) microspheres.

Notes: Proton magnetic resonance studies at 220 MHz were carried out on synthetic polymers of the repeating tetrapeptide of elastin. Temperature dependence and solvent-mixture dependence of peptide proton chemical shifts were determined for both linear polymers, N-formyl-(Val-Pro-Gly1-Gly2)n-Val OMe where n ≃ 8 and 40, and for cyclic polymers (Val-Pro-Gly1-Gly2)n, where n = 3 and 4. The Gly2 NH was found to be solvent shielded. In addition, by studying the polymers Boc-Val-Pro-Gly1-Gly2-OH, H-Pro-Gly1-Gly2-Val OMe, H(Pro-Gly1-Gly2-Val)3OH, and others, it was demonstrated that the Val C-O immediately preceding the Gly2 NH in the sequence was required for solvent shielding. Also the Gly2 NH resonance is found at higher field than the Gly1 NH resonance. This provides the basis for proposing a β turn in which the Pro and Gly1 residues form the corners, i.e., residues i + 1 and i + 2, and in which the Gly2 NH, residue i + 3 hydrogen bonds to the carbonyl of residue i, the Val residue.Studies on methanol-water solvent systems indicated retention of the β turn as a significant conformational feature. This suggests that the β turn occurs in the elastic fiber, which contains about 60% water but which utilizes association of hydrophobic groups as a primary force in fibrogenesis.
