    Description: Recently, with the discrepancy between increasing traffic demand and limited land resources, more and more expressways are choosing to use hard shoulders to expand into quasi-six-lane or quasi-eight-lane roads. Therefore, more emergency parking bays are used in place of traditional parking belts. However, there are no standards defining clear and unified specifications for the design of parking bays. This paper aimed to investigate the impact of emergency parking bays on expressway traffic operations with various traffic volumes and setting conditions. Based on the Monte Carlo method, VISSIM (Verkehr in Städten Simulation, a microscopic simulation software) simulation experiments were conducted using measured traffic operation data from one expressway in Zhejiang province. The probability of unsafe deceleration, lane-changing maneuvers and delay times were considered as the safety and efficiency indexes in this simulation study. The simulation results indicated that the emergency parking vehicle had an increasing impact on the following vehicle as the traffic volume increased. However, the impact pattern was found to be insensitive to the changing of the bay taper length. For low traffic volume, compared with the arrival vehicle, the departure vehicle had more impact on the traffic operation of the mainline. However, the impact of the arrival vehicle became more remarkable as the traffic volume increased. After parking, the waiting time for merging into the mainline was reduced as the volume decreased or as the bay taper increased. Furthermore, reductions caused by varying bay tapers were more significant under high volume conditions. Finally, this study suggests that parking bays are inapplicable when the occupancy of the road space exceeds 20% (about 3000 veh/h), because they would cause significant impact on the safety and efficiency of the expressway. The results of this paper are useful for the design and implementation of emergency parking bays.

    Description: The Wulandele molybdenum deposit is a porphyry-type Mo deposit in the Dalaimiao area of northern Inner Mongolia, China. Molybdenite Re-Os dating yields a model age of 134.8 ± 1.9 Ma, with the fine-grained monzogranite most closely related to the mineralization. The lithogeochemical data show that the monzogranite is weakly peraluminous, high-K calc-alkaline series, with reduced to slightly oxidized, highly fractionated I-type granite characteristics. The relatively low initial 87Sr/86Sr (range from 0.705347 to 0.705771), weakly negative εNd(t) (range from −2.0 to −1.3), and crust-mantle mixing of Pb isotopes suggest that the monzogranite originated from the partial melting of mafic juvenile lower continental crust derived from the depleted mantle, with a minor component of ancient continental crust. Combined with the regional tectonic evolution, we argue that the partial melting, then injection, of the monzogranite melt was probably triggered by collapse or delamination of the thickened lithosphere, which was mainly in response to the post-orogenic extensional setting of the Mongol–Okhotsk belt; this is possibly coupled with a back-arc extension related to Paleo-Pacific plate subduction. The extensively fractional crystallization of the monzogranite melt is the crucial enrichment process, resulting in magmatic hydrothermal Mo mineralization in the Wulandele deposit, and the Cretaceous granitoids are generally favorable to form Mo mineralization in the Dalaimiao area.

    Description: Large-scale population mobility has an important impact on the spatial layout of China’s urban systems. Compared with traditional census data, mobile-phone-based travel big data can describe the mobility patterns of a population in a timely, dynamic, complete, and accurate manner. With the travel big dataset supported by Tencent's location big data, combined with social network analysis (SNA) and a semiparametric geographically weighted regression (SGWR) model, this paper first analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns and characteristics of mobile-data-based population mobility (MBPM), and then revealed the socioeconomic factors related to population mobility during the Spring Festival of 2019, which is the most important festival in China, equivalent to Thanksgiving Day in United States. During this period, the volume of population mobility exceeded 200 million, which became the largest time node of short-term population mobility in the world. The results showed that population mobility presents a spatial structure dominated by two east–west main axes formed by Chengdu, Nanjing, Wuhan, Shanghai; and three north–south main axes formed by Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Wuhan, and Chengdu. The major cities in the four urban agglomerations in China occupy an absolute core position in the population mobility network hierarchy, and the population mobility network presents typical “small world” features and forms 11 closely related groups. Semiparametric geographically weighted regression model results showed that mobile-data-based population mobility variation is significantly related to the value-added of secondary and tertiary industries, foreign capital, average wage, urbanization rate, and value-added of primary industries. When the spatial heterogeneity and nonstationarity was considered, the socioeconomic factors that affect population mobility showed differences between different regions and cities. The patterns of population mobility and determinants explored in this paper can provide a new reference for the balanced development of regional economy.

    Description: Hydrological models play an essential role in data assimilation (DA) systems. However, it is a challenging task to acquire the distributed hydrological model parameters that affect the accuracy of the simulations at a grid scale. Remote sensing data provide an ideal observation for DA to estimate parameters and state variables. In this study, a special assimilation scheme was proposed to jointly estimate parameters and soil moisture (SM) by assimilating brightness temperature (TB) from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission. Variable infiltration capacity (VIC) hydrological model and L-band microwave emission of the biosphere model (L-MEB) are coupled as model and observation operators, respectively. The scheme combines two stages of estimators, one for the static model parameters and the other for the dynamic state variables. The estimators approximate the posterior probability distribution of an unknown target through sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) sampling. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and immune evolution strategy are embedded in both stages to solve particle impoverishment problems. To evaluate the effectiveness of the scheme, the estimated SM sets are compared with in-situ observations and SMOS products in Maqu on the Tibetan Plateau. Specifically, the root mean square error decreased from 0.126 to 0.087 m3m−3 for surface SM, with a slight impact on the root zone. The temporal correlation between DA results and in-situ measurements increased to 0.808 and 0.755 for surface SM (+0.057) and root zone SM (+0.040), respectively. The results demonstrate that assimilating TB has tremendous potential as an approach to improve the estimation of distributed model parameters and SMs of surface and root zone at a grid scale, and the immune evolution strategy is effective for increasing the accuracy of approximation in sampling.

    Description: The fracture-behaviors of two Ti-Al-Sn-Zr-Mo-Nb-W-Si alloys with different slow-diffusing β stabilizing elements (Mo, W) were investigated through in-situ tensile testing at 650 °C via scanning electron microscopy. These alloys have two phases: the α phase with hcp-structure (a = 0.295 nm, c = 0.468 nm) and the β phase with bcc-structure (a = 0.332 nm). Three-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) results show that Mo and W mainly dissolve in the β phase, and they tend to cluster near the α/β phase boundary. Adding more slow-diffusing β stabilizing elements can improve the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the alloy at 650 °C. During tensile deformation at 650 °C, microvoids mainly initiate at α/β interfaces. With increases in the contents of Mo and W, the β phase content increases and the average phase size decreases, which together have excellent accommodative deformation capability and will inhibit the microvoids’ nucleation along the interface. In addition, the segregation of Mo and W near the α/β interface can reduce the diffusion coefficient of the interface and inhibit the growth of microvoids along the interface, which are both helpful to improve the ultimate tensile strength and plasticity.

    Description: The shifts among bloom-forming cyanobacteria have attracted increasing attention due to the reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus during the eutrophication mitigation process. However, knowledge is limited regarding the pattern and drivers of the shifts among these cyanobacterial genera. In this study, we performed a 7-year long, monthly investigation in Lake Chaohu, to analyze the interannual and seasonal shifts between Microcystis and Dolichospermum. Our results showed that Microcystis was the dominant cyanobacterium in the western lake region in summer, whereas Dolichospermum was dominant in the other regions and seasons. The Microcystis biomass and ratio were driven primarily by total phosphorus and temperature. The sensitivity of Dolichospermum to nutrients and temperature was relatively weak compared to that of Microcystis. The shifts between Microcystis and Dolichospermum might be led by Microcystis. If the temperature and phosphorus level were relatively high, then Microcystis grew rapidly, and competitively excluded Dolichospermum. If the nutrient level, especially the phosphorus level, was low, then the exclusive power of Microcystis was weak, and Dolichospermum maintained its dominance, even in summer. The key temperature (~17 °C) determined the dominance of the two cyanobacteria. Microcystis never dominated, while Dolichospermum was always dominant below the key temperature. Microcystis and Dolichospermum had different means of responding to the interaction of temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus. The Dolichospermum biomass was sensitive to the variation in nitrogen level, and the sensitivity depended on temperature. While the Microcystis biomass was sensitive to the variation in phosphorus level, and the sensitivity depended on temperature and total nitrogen. The different ways might contribute to the succession of the two cyanobacteria. Our findings will be helpful for improving the understanding of the shift process between Microcystis and Dolichospermum.

    Description: The traditional local binary pattern (LBP, hereinafter we also call it a two-dimensional local binary pattern 2D-LBP) is unable to depict the spectral characteristics of a hyperspectral image (HSI). To cure this deficiency, this paper develops a joint spectral-spatial 2D-LBP feature (J2D-LBP) by averaging three different 2D-LBP features in a three-dimensional hyperspectral data cube. Subsequently, J2D-LBP is added into the Gabor filter-based deep network (GFDN), and then a novel classification method JL-GFDN is proposed. Different from the original GFDN framework, JL-GFDN further fuses the spectral and spatial features together for HSI classification. Three real data sets are adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of JL-GFDN, and the experimental results verify that (i) JL-GFDN has a better classification accuracy than the original GFDN; (ii) J2D-LBP is more effective in HSI classification in comparison with the traditional 2D-LBP.

    Description: This study aimed to explore the effects of type and specifications of bus stop on bicycle speed and cycle track capacity. This paper investigates the traffic flow operations of tracks at basic sections, curbside stops, and bus bays by video recording. T-test and comparative study were used to analyze the influences of stop types on bicycle speed and capacity of track. The relationships between stop specifications and speed and capacity of track are analyzed with correlation analysis. The main results are as follows: (1) Without passengers crossing, bus bays have significant impact on bicycle speed, while it is not for curbside stops; (2) except platform length, there are strong negative relationships between bicycle speed and density of platform access, total width of platform accesses (TWPA), total width of platform accesses-to-platform length ratio (TWPA-to-PL ratio), total width of platform accesses-to-track width ratio (TWPA-to-TW ratio); (3) curbside stop and bus bay reduce track capacities by 32% and 13.5% on average, respectively; and (4) in contrast to bus bays, curbside stops have more significant impact on capacity of track, which also presents in the influence of the setting parameters of stops. Based the results above, some suggestions on stop specifications are finally proposed.
