Notes: Abstract Hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration of yellowtail blood elevated more than 30% during severe hypoxia for 35 or 40 min. About 40% of the hematocrit elevation is considered to have been caused by erythrocyte supply from the spleen, and about 60% by hemoconcentration due to water shift out of the circulating plasma. Osmotic swelling of erythrocytes is considered not to have occurred, judging from the constant level in the saturation index of the blood.

Notes: Abstract Microhardness was measured in sampling sites in the tibial diaphysis of control rats that received less than 1 ppm fluoride in the drinking water, and experimental rats that received 30, 90 and 120 ppm fluoride in the drinking water for 17 days. The latter dose was toxic, as evidenced by a decreased final body weight in this group. By means of tetracycline labelling, it was possible to measure bone hardness in four zones of increasing bone age: I) 3 days, II) 8 days, III) 13 days and IV) 22 days. Zones I through III represented bone formed during fluoride treatment, and Zone IV bone formed before fluoride treatment. In the control group, microhardness increased from Zone I to II, probably because mineral concentration was relatively low in Zone I, and remained constant thereafter. In the 90 and 120 ppm fluoride-treated groups, maximum microhardness was not achieved until Zone III. This delay was probably due to the fact that fluoride in large doses inhibits the rate of mineralization. In the 30 ppm fluoride-treated group, there was no delay in achievement of maximum microhardness; microhardness values in Zones I and III were greater than those in control animals, and microhardness in Zone III was higher than that in Zone IV. These results show that: 1) bone microhardness is increased in bone formed during fluoride treatment in rats given 30 ppm fluoride in the drinking water, 2) toxic doses of fluoride delay, but do not prevent achievement of normal maximum microhardness, and 3) changes in microhardness are seen only in bone formed during fluoride treatment.

Notes: Abstract For the formation of recombinants involving closely linked markers, two distinct processes play a role. The recombinational interaction between homologous DNA molecules results in the presence of heteroduplex DNA joining the parental components of the recombinant. The presence of markers distinguishing the parents in the region of heteroduplex DNA can result in base pair mismatches. The post recombination repair of such mismatches can contribute to the separation of closely linked markers. The processes responsible for such repair also play roles in mutation avoidance. The specificities, functions and contribution to the formation of recombinants for closely linked markers of the processes inEscherichia coli are described.

Notes: Abstract. Molecular cloning and sequence analysis of myosin genes from Arabidopsis thaliana and electron microscopic observation of a myosin from characean alga have revealed that overall structure of plant unconventional myosins is similar to that of the class V myosins. These plant unconventional myosins have two heads, a coiled-coil tail of varied length and a globular tail piece at the end. The tail piece is probably a site for membrane interaction. Characean myosin is of special interest because it can translocate actin filaments at a velocity several times faster than muscle myosin, which must have evolved to support the quick movement of animals in the struggle for their lives.

Notes: Summary The renal effects of nine, 8-substituted derivatives of 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate were studied in anesthetized mongrel dogs. Infusion of the compounds into a renal artery resulted in an increase of renal blood flow without any effect on blood pressure. Diuretic and natriuretic effects are evident with 6 of the 9 derivatives. As these 8-substituted analogues exert renal effects in a manner similar to that seen with the parent nucleotide, cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate, they may serve as useful pharmacological agents in vivo.

Notes: Summary The effects of intraventricular administration of 6-hydroxydopamine on electrodermal activity were studied in cats. The treatment slowed down or eliminated habituation of the skin conductance response to repeated auditory stimuli. However, the impairment of habituation was not accompanied by an increase in the rate of spontaneous skin conductance fluctuation.

Notes: Summary The development of EEG in 8 male rats from 4 to 16 weeks age were studied chronically. Theta band had the highest power at 5–16 weeks. Especially after 11 weeks, theta band presented a signigicantly higher peak than that of 4-week-old. In contrast to this, delta band, which had the highest power at 4 weeks, was markedly decreased.

Notes: Summary D-Cysteinolic acid (1) analogues with an S-C-C-N skeleton showed increased platelet anti-aggregant activity in the following order: 2-aminoethanesulfonic acids, thiazolidines, 2-aminoethanethiols and 2-aminoethyl disulfides. Methyl substitutions at the 2-position potentiated the activity. Of these analogues, bis [(R)-2-aminopropyl] disulfide was the most potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation, with about 600-fold the activity of (1).

Notes: Abstract We have sequenced the gene encoding Bacillus stearothermophilus ATCC12016 α-glucosidase (α-d-glucoside glucohydrolase, EC 3.2.1.20) specific for non-reducing terminal α-1,4 bonds of maltosaccharides and α-glucans. The amino acid sequence of the enzyme deduced from the nucleotide sequence of the gene (1665 base pairs) consisted of 555 residues with a molecular mass of 65233. The enzyme showed 40%–57% sequence similarities to α-d-glucohydrolases with very different substrate specificity, such as Bacillus cereus ATCC7064 oligo-1,6-glucosidase, Bacillus thermoglucosidasius KP1006 oligo-1,6-glucosidase, Saccharomyces carlsbergensis CB11 α-glucosidase, Bacillus sp. F5 α-glucosidase, Streptococcus mutans (Ingbritt strain) dextran glucosidase, Bacillus sp. SAM1606 α-glucosidase and Escherichia coli ECL116 trehalose-6-phosphate hydrolase. All these enzymes had sequences equivalent to secondary elements revealed in B. cereus oligo-1,6-glucosidase by X-ray crystallography. We have suggested that the B.stearothermophilus enzyme adopts the same polypeptide folding, i.e. an (α/β)8-barrel in the N-terminal active-site domain, as the B.cereus enzyme and other α-glucohydrolases.
