Notes: Summary Thin filns of PSt/PMAA and PEO-PSt-PEO block polyners were deposited on a polystyrene substrate by solution adsorption (with or without solvent treatnent), and the filn surfaces were characterized by neans of XPS. Direct solvent-casting of PEO-PSt-PEO from benzene solutions resulted in PSt-rich surfaces, whereas PMAA richer surfaces were obtained for PSt/PMAA filns cast from DMF solutions. Moreover, solvent treatment after casting had profound effect on the filn surface conposition. Treatment with water markedly increased the surface concentration of polar PEO segments. In the case of PSt-PMAA block polymers, the PSt content on the surface increased in the order of water〈 ethanol 〈 cyclohexane 〈 petroleum ether, the last-named giving films with almost pure PSt surface. It is well worth noticing that the bulk conposition had little to do with the surface conposition for both PSt/PMAA and PEO-PSt-PEO block polyners within the conposition range investigated when subsequent solvent treatnent was applied.

Notes: Abstract Protein synthesis during ascospore germination of the heterothallicSaccharomyces cerevisiae strain AP-3 was investigated. Protein synthesis in the germinating ascospores appeared to begin approximately 20 min following glucose initiation. Since RNA synthesis did not start until approximately 70 min after the onset of germination, strain AP-3 ascospores must contain RNA which is ready for immediate translation. Both trehalase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activities were found to be affected by the onset of germination. Trehalase activity was found to increase severalfold following 60 min of spore germination but remained relatively constant over the subsequent 120 min examined. Dehydrogenase activity was not detectable in AP-3 ascospores but was measurable in germinating ascospores.

Notes: Abstract Synorogenic veins from the Proterozoic Eastern Mount Isa Fold Belt contain three different types of fluid inclusions: CO2-rich, aqueous two-phase and rare multiphase. Inclusions of CO2 without a visible H2O phase are particularly common. The close association of CO2-rich inclusions with aqueous two-phase, and possibly multiphase inclusions suggests that phase separation of low- to -moderate salinity CO2-rich hydrothermal fluids led to the selective entrapment of the CO2. Microthermometric results indicate that CO2-rich inclusions homogenize between –15.5 and +29.9 °C which corresponds to densities of 0.99 to 0.60 g.cm−3. The homogenization temperatures of the associated aqueous two-phase inclusions are 127–397 °C, with salinities of 0.5 to 18.1 wt.% NaCl equivalent. The rarely observed multiphase inclusions homogenize between 250 and 350 °C, and have salinities ranging from 34.6 to 41.5 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Evidence used to support the presence of fluid immiscibility in this study is mainly derived from observations of coexisting H2O-rich and CO2-rich inclusions in groups and along the same trail. In addition, these two presumably unmixed fluids are also found on adjacent fractures where monophase CO2-rich inclusions are closely related to H2O-rich inclusions. Similar CO2-rich inclusions are widespread in mineral deposits in this region, which are simply metal-enriched synorogenic veins. Therefore, we argue that fluid immiscibility caused volatile species such as CO2 and H2S to be lost from liquid, thus triggering ore deposition by increasing the fluid pH and decreasing the availability of complexing ligands.

Notes: Abstract. We have studied the effect of the reading beam on the decay process of the photoinduced second-order susceptibility χ(2) in both the guest-host system (disperse red 1-doped polymethyl methactrylate) and the side-chain system (disperse red 19-functionalized polyimide polymer). Both experimentally and theoretically, we have proved that the reading beam has the erasure effect on the decay process, that is, χ(2) decays faster in the high intensity than in the low intensity of the reading beam. Furthermore, the relationship between the time constant τB of the slow component of the decay process and the intensity of the reading beam I1.06 is derived from the theoretical equations, which is fitted well with the experimental results. Based on the fitting parameters, we also compare, quantitatively, the thermal-induced orientational diffusion of trans- and the quantum efficiency of trans-to-cis photoisomerization in the two systems.

Notes: Abstract. Creating a computer model from an existing part is a common problem in reverse engineering. The part might be scanned with a device like the laser range scanner, or points might be measured on its surface with a mechanical probe. Sometimes, not only the spatial location of points, but also some associated physical property can be measured. The problem of automatically reconstructing from this data a topologically consistent and geometrically accurate model of the object and of the sampled scalar field is the subject of this paper. The proposed algorithm can deal with connected, orientable manifolds of unrestricted topological type, given a sufficiently dense and uniform sampling of the object's surface. It is capable of automatically reconstructing both the model and a scalar field over its surface. It uses Delaunay triangulations, Voronoi diagrams, and α-shapes for efficiency of computation and theoretical soundness. It generates a representation of the surface and the field based on Bernstein—Bézier polynomials, with the surface modeled by implicit patches (A-patches), that are guaranteed to be smooth and single-sheeted.

Notes: Abstract The suitability of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol as a complexing agent for on-line preconcentration of copper using RP-C18 material in a microcolumn with flow injection coupled with flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FI-FAAS) has been tested. Various parameters affecting complex formation, such as pH, sample flow rate, etc. and its elution into the nebulizer of FAAS were optimized. ¶A 5 × 10–3 mol/L reagent was on-line mixed with aqueous sample solution acidified with 0.1% (v/v) nitric acid ¶(pH 3–4) and flowed through the microcolumn for 30 s. The adsorbed complexes in the microcolumn were eluted with ethanol in 10 s into the nebulizer of FAAS. A good precision (1.7% for 50 μg/L copper, n = 12), high enrichment factor (19) with detection limit (3σ) 2.0 μg/L, and sample throughput (90 h–1) were obtained. The method was applied to certified reference materials seawater, mussel (biological), NBS-362 and NBS-364 (special low alloy steel), for the determination of copper, and the results were in good agreement with the certified values.

Notes: Abstract. Dihydropyrimidinase from Pseudomonas stutzeri ATCC 17588 was purified 100-fold and characterized. It was found that dihydrouracil, dihydrothymine and hydantoin could serve as substrates for the partially purified enzyme. The K m values for dihydrouracil, dihydrothymine and hydantoin were determined to be 19.6 µM, 21.3 µM and 36.4 µM, respectively, while their respective V max values were 0.836 µmol/min, 0.666 µmol/min and 2.21 µmol/min. Between pH 7.5 and 9.0, enzyme activity was shown to be maximal. The optimum temperature for enzyme activity was 45 °C. Using gel filtration, the molecular weight of the enzyme was calculated to be approximately 115 000 Da. Metal ions were found to influence the level of enzyme activity. Dihydropyrimidinase activity was stimulated by magnesium ions and inhibited by either zinc or copper ions.
