Description: Strigolactones (SLs) stimulate seed germination of root parasitic plants and induce hyphal branching of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in the rhizosphere. In addition, they have been classified as a new group of plant hormones essential for shoot branching inhibition. It has been demonstrated thus far that SLs are derived from carotenoid...

Notes: [Auszug] Recently, Benson and Folley2 reported that the administration of oxytocin to a lactating rat retarded the mammary involution which occurred after weaning, and suggested the possible part which oxytocin plays in the release of prolactin and other lactogenic and galactopoietic hormones from the ...

Notes: Abstract A new electrochemical heat pump using a combination of an electrolytic reaction at lower temperature to absorb low grade thermal energy and a thermochemical reaction at higher temperature to produce more efficient thermal energy is proposed. At a lower temperature, an endothermic reaction which cannot occur thermochemically proceeds with electrolysis. At a higher temperature, an exothermic reaction which is the reverse of the electrolysis reaction occurs thermochemically to produce high grade thermal energy. The water gas shift reaction, CO2(g) + H2(g) ⇌ CO(g) + H2O(g), in molten carbonate is one possible candidate for the new electrochemical heat pump and can lead to an increase in the temperature of the thermal energy from 1100 to 1200 K. A heat pump system using the shift reaction is also considered theoretically.

Notes: Abstract Changes in the yield and chemical composition of milk, together with those in the nipple preferences and suckling behavior of infants, were followed in three lactating Japanese monkeys rearing single infants under laboratory conditions at monthly intervals for six months after their paturition. Milk accumulating in the mammary glands during a 4-hr separation of the infant was collected by milking under anesthesia with the aid of a physiological dose of oxytocin. The stage of full lactation appeared to last for about two or three months after parturition. The milk at this stage contained 14.0% of total solids, 4.2% of lipids, 1.6% of proteins, and 6.2% of lactose, and the concentrations of Na, Cl, and K in the milk water were 7.4, 15.1, and 5.9 mM, respectively. From the 9th or 13th week of lactation onwards, according to the individual, the milk composition changed appreciably and the time during which the young left hold of the mother's nipple also increased. The weaning of young in the Japanese monkey appears to begin during the 3rd or 4th month of age. The milk production then wanes and almost ceases by the end of the 6th month. The nipple preference of the young was generally established completely by the 3rd, or the 8th at latest, week of age. However, no difference in either the yield or composition of the milk secreted was found between the mammary glands of the preferred and non-preferred sides. Without regard to the apparent nipple preference, infants seem to ingest milk from the mother's breasts of both sides. Accurate estimation of the rate of milk production could not be achieved, but the rate was expected to be 150–200 g/day at the height of lactation based on the relation between the mother's body weight and the milk production rates of other primate species. A disparity was noted between the observed and estimated values for the milk yield, and a diurnal fluctuation in the milk secretion of the Japanese monkey was inferred.

Notes: Abstract BaTiO3-based composites with nanosized SiC particulates were successfully fabricated by a hot-pressing technique in an argon atmosphere. Crystal structure and phase transformation behaviour were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, linear thermal expansion analysis and internal friction measurement. It was confirmed that the added SiC particulates were uniformly distributed within the matrix BaTiO3 grains, with some larger particulates located at the BaTiO3 grain boundaries. In addition, there were no reaction phases between BaTiO3 matrix and SiC particulates. The crystal structure gradually changed from tetragonal to cubic phase with respect to the SiC content. The Curie temperature, T c , was lowered as the SiC content increased. Moreover, the transformations in the low-temperature range almost disappeared above 1 vol% SiC. The diffused phase transformation phenomenon was observed as the SiC content increased up to 3 vol%. The results were associated with the grain-size reduction, the existence of oxygen vacancies and the residual stresses associated with the thermal expansion mismatch between matrix and SiC particulate. The influence on the domain structure development of SiC particulates dispersed within the matrix grains was also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The effect of systematic modifications in the chemistry of the phase-boundary film on the macroscopic mechanical properties of Si3N4-matrix composites was investigated. Model composite materials, containing SiC or WC platelets, were prepared and only the bulk anion composition of the glassy-SiO2 intergranular phase was varied by adding increasing amounts of fluorine to the material. Detailed material characterizations by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and Raman spectroscopy on both undoped and F-doped composites allowed to derive a structural model of the phase-boundary film as well as to evaluate the average microscopic stresses acting on it. In addition, high-temperature internal friction measurements provided an estimate of the grain-boundary relaxation temperature as a function of the F content. Noticeable variations of both elastic modulus and fracture energy of the composite were detected upon F addition, which were related to a spontaneous process of phase-boundary microcracking upon cooling. A threshold of the F-content was found for microcrack formation and its existence is theoretically explained according to a percolation process of non-bridged SiO4-tetrahedra, which arises from the incorporation of F into the intergranular film network.
