Description: The abundance of organic matter in shales, which has a direct effect on the hydrocarbon generation potential of shales, is an important organic geochemical parameter for evaluating shale gas reservoirs. The total organic carbon content (TOC content) in shale is controlled by the abundance of original sedimentary organic matter. Therefore, it is very important to study the mechanism of organic matter enrichment in shale. In this paper, the Lower Cambrian marine shales from the Lower Yangtze region are selected as the research subject, most of which originate from a typical area well called Well JXY1. The degree of pyritization (DOP) is used to characterize the redox environment of the water body, while the P/Al ratio is used to analyze the biological productivity of paleoseawater. The paleosalinity of seawater is calculated via carbon and oxygen isotope analysis. In addition, the early Cambrian hydrothermal activities were studied by using core description; Si, Al, Fe, and Mn elemental analysis; and oxygen isotope calculations. The results show that during the early Cambrian Wangyinpu sedimentary period, the seawater was an anaerobic water body with H2S, and the oxygen concentration was approximately 0 mL/L. In the middle stages of the Wangyinpu sedimentary period, the water body had the strongest reducibility and the highest biological productivity. Moreover, the paleoocean in this period between the Yangtze plate and the Cathaysian plate was greatly affected by hydrothermal activities, with temperatures ranging from 90°C to 120°C. Active hydrothermal activities promoted high biological productivity and an anaerobic environment, both of which were conducive to the preservation and enrichment of organic matter, resulting in extremely high TOC content in the Wangyinpu shales (from 6.5% to approximately 16%).

Description: When thermopile sensor is used for safety monitoring of equipment in industrial environments, particularly for measuring the thermal radiation information of device, the measured result of this kind of sensor is usually affected by ambient temperature due to its unique structure. An improved PSO-BP algorithm is proposed for temperature compensation of thermopile sensor and correcting the error in the condition of the system accuracy requirements reduced by temperature. The core of improved PSO-BP algorithm is to improve the certainty of initial weights and thresholds that belonged to BP neural network and then train the samples by using BP neural network for enhancing the generalization ability and stability of system. The experimental results show that the proposed PSO-BP network outperforms other similar algorithms with faster convergence speed, lower errors, and higher accuracy.

Description: A vacuum ultraviolet lamp based single photon ionization- (SPI-) photoelectron ionization (PEI) portable reflecting time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) was designed for online monitoring gas samples. It has a dual mode ionization source: SPI for analyte with ionization energy (IE) below 10.6 eV and PEI for IE higher than 10.6 eV. Two kinds of sampling inlets, a capillary inlet and a membrane inlet, are utilized for high concentration and trace volatile organic compounds, respectively. A mass resolution of 1100 at m/z 64 has been obtained with a total size of 40 × 31 × 29 cm, the weight is 27 kg, and the power consumption is only 70 W. A mixture of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), SO2, and discharging products of SF6 were used to test its performance, and the result showed that the limit of quantitation for BTX is as low as 5 ppbv (S/N = 10 : 1) with linear dynamic ranges greater than four orders of magnitude. The portable TOFMS was also evaluated by analyzing volatile organic compounds from wine and decomposition products of SF6 inside of a gas-insulated switchgear.

Description: Nonlinear Muskingum models are important tools in hydrological forecasting. In this paper, we have come up with a class of new discretization schemes including a parameter to approximate the nonlinear Muskingum model based on general trapezoid formulas. The accuracy of these schemes is second order, if , but interestingly when , the accuracy of the presented scheme gets improved to third order. Then, the present schemes are transformed into an unconstrained optimization problem which can be solved by a hybrid invasive weed optimization (HIWO) algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the present methods. The numerical results substantiate the fact that the presented methods have better precision in estimating the parameters of nonlinear Muskingum models.

Description: A new distance-aware broadcasting algorithm was proposed to enhance the propagation distance in the latency time of safety-related message broadcasting. The IEEE 802.11p standard states that if the medium is detected as idle, a station would defer its transmission within a backoff time to avoid collisions with other stations. The backoff times follow uniform distribution over [0, CW]. In this way, fairness among all the stations can be guaranteed. However, propagation distance was ignored and in safety-related message broadcasting fairness is not the most important issue. In the proposed algorithm, the lengths of backoff times are generated from a nonuniform distribution. They are related with the distances between the source station and its forwarding stations. The farthest forwarding station has the highest probability to forward messages. Performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by using a 2D Markov chain. Analytical and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can enhance the performance of safety-related message broadcasting in terms of propagation distance, which is reflected by the successful transmission probability. The proposed algorithm does not need additional waiting time, RTS/CTS, and ACK, therefore having better compatibility with the IEEE 802.11p standard than earlier distance-aware algorithms.

Description: Parameters estimation of Muskingum model is very significative in both exploitation and utilization of water resources and hydrological forecasting. The optimal results of parameters directly affect the accuracy of flood forecasting. This paper considers the parameters estimation problem of Muskingum model from the following two aspects. Firstly, based on the general trapezoid formulas, a class of new discretization methods including a parameter to approximate Muskingum model is presented. The accuracy of these methods is second-order, when . Particularly, if we choose , the accuracy of the presented method can be improved to third-order. Secondly, according to the Newton-type trust region algorithm, a new Newton-type trust region algorithm is given to obtain the parameters of Muskingum model. This method can avoid high dependence on the initial parameters. The average absolute errors (AAE) and the average relative errors (ARE) of the proposed algorithm of parameters estimation for Muskingum model are 8.208122 and 2.462438%, respectively, where . It is shown from these results that the presented algorithm has higher forecasting accuracy and wider practicability than other methods.

Description: Soft set theory is a newly emerging tool to deal with uncertain problems. Based on soft sets, soft rough approximation operators are introduced, and soft rough sets are defined by using soft rough approximation operators. Soft rough sets, which could provide a better approximation than rough sets do, can be seen as a generalized rough set model. This paper is devoted to investigating soft rough approximation operations and relationships among soft sets, soft rough sets, and topologies. We consider four pairs of soft rough approximation operators and give their properties. Four sorts of soft rough sets are investigated, and their related properties are given. We show that Pawlak's rough set model can be viewed as a special case of soft rough sets, obtain the structure of soft rough sets, give the structure of topologies induced by a soft set, and reveal that every topological space on the initial universe is a soft approximating space.

Description: This paper presents a novel low-rank affinity based local-driven algorithm to robustly propagate the multilabels from training images to test images. A graph is constructed over the segmented local image regions. The labels for vertices from the training data are derived based on the context among different training images, and the derived vertex labels are propagated to the unlabeled vertices via the graph. The multitask low-rank affinity, which jointly seeks the sparsity-consistent low-rank affinities from multiple feature matrices, is applied to compute the edge weights between graph vertices. The inference process of multitask low-rank affinity is formulated as a constrained nuclear norm and -norm minimization problem. The optimization is conducted efficiently with the augmented Lagrange multiplier method. Based on the learned local patch labels we can predict the multilabels for the test images. Experiments on multilabel image annotation demonstrate the encouraging results from the proposed framework.

Description: This paper investigates the synchronization problem in a new 5D hyperchaotic system. Firstly, the existence of two types of synchronization problems in the new 5D hyperchaotic system is proved. Then, by the dynamic feedback control method, one complete synchronization problem and three coexistence of complete synchronization and antisynchronization problems in such system are realized. Finally, numerical simulations are used to verify the validity and effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Description: Considering the high accuracy requirement of information exchange via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, an extended state observer (ESO) is designed to estimate the opening angle change of an electronic throttle (ET), wherein the emphasis is placed on the nonlinear uncertainties of stick-slip friction and spring in the system as well as the existence of external disturbance. In addition, a back-stepping sliding mode controller incorporating an adaptive control law is presented, and the stability and robustness of the system are analyzed using Lyapunov technique. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted using simulation. The results show that, compared with back-stepping control (BSC), the proposed controller achieves superior performance in terms of the steady-state error and rising time.
