Notes: The paper presents a finite element formulation for the geometrically non-linear analysis of shells. The formulation is based on the Hellinger - Reissner approach and uses internal transverse shear stress unknowns to alleviate the problem of shear locking. A ring and a quadrilateral element are presented, together with three examples which demonstrate the accuracy of the elements.

Notes: The problem of design of actively controlled structures subject to restrictions on the damping parameters of the closed-loop system is formulated and solved as a multiobjective optimization problem. The purpose of control is to effectively suppress structural vibrations due to initial excitation. The cross-sectional areas of the members are treated as design variables. The structural weight and the controlled system energy are considered as objective functions for minimization. The goal programming approach is used for the solution of the multiobjective optimization problems. The procedure is illustrated through numerical simulations using two-bar and twelve-bar truss structures.

Notes: This article describes numerical modelling of heat transfer and thermoelasticity effects that are significant in thermo-optical designs of solid state slab lasers capable of high average output power. The heat equation and equations of thermoelasticity are solved simultaneously to evaluate thermal stresses and microscopic deformations in isotropic and anisotropic laser host media. An efficient dynamic alternating-direction implicit method has been developed and applied in this work to solve the steady state heat transfer and stress potential equations in two dimensions. Numerical results are presented for some problems that arise in baseline designs of experimental slab laser systems.

Notes: The finite strip method is developed to predict the geometrically non-linear response of rectangular laminated plates subjected to progressive end shortening whilst initial imperfection and/or applied pressure loading are also present. The development is an extension of earlier work concerned with perfect, unpressurized laminates which have simply supported loaded ends at which lateral in-plane expansion is either allowed freely or is prevented completely. The analysis is conducted in the contexts of classical plate theory and first-order shear deformation plate theory, in turn. A number of applications involving both isotropic plates and laminated plates is described.

Notes: The sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors of actively controlled flexible structures with distinct eigenvalues is considered. The sensitivity information is essential in the optimization of large space structures with stability/performance robustness, closed-loop eigenvalues or damping ratios treated as objective or constraint functions. The efficiency of the analytical expressions derived for the rates of change of the closed-loop eigenvalues with respect to structural design variables is demonstrated through two numerical examples. The utility of the sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors in evaluating the derivatives of the stability and performance robustness indices is also indicated and illustrated through numerical examples.

Notes: A set of field equations, the associated finite element model formulations and numerical methodology for thermomechanical response evaluations of fluid-saturated media under finite deformation have been presented in Part I of the companion manuscript.1 In this paper, the formulations and methodologies are initially validated through benchmark model comparisons prior to constitutive model sensitivity analysis and subsequent thermomechanical response determination. The responses for the testbed problems, using the developed solution algorithm, compare favourably with the reported results. The response investigations for complex geomechanical problems illustrate the general applicability of the developed finite element model simulator in predicting the long-term thermal, pore pressure, displacement and stress responses of fluid-saturated porous media subjected to thermomechanical loading, as encountered in nuclear waste management scenarios. The presented formulations and numerical procedures can also be used to investigate a wide range of engineering problems involving hygrothermomechanical response prediction.

Notes: The coupled thermomechanical responses of fluid-saturated porous continua subjected to finite deformation are investigated. Field equations governing the transient response of the media are derived from a continuum thermodynamics mixture theory based on mass balance, momentum balance and energy balance laws as well as the Clausius-Duhem inequality. Finite element procedures for the two-dimensional response, employing updated Lagrangian formulations for the solid skeleton deformation and the weak formulations for fluid and thermal transport equations, are implemented in a fully implicit form. Temperature-dependent mechanical properties for the non-linear solid matrix, characterized by Perzyna's viscoplastic model, are assumed. An iterative scheme based on the full Newton-Raphson method is presented for simultaneously solving the coupled non-linear equations.

Notes: A survey of recent developments in sparse matrix technology is presented. Two fundamental areas are reviewed: 1.Sorting and reordering techniques by which the non-zero elements of a given sparse matrix can be rearranged to obtain a form which leads to more efficient computations.2.Direct methods for solving systems of linear equations and computing inverses.
