    Notes: Summary Variation in weight, wing length and bill length in a population of grey-crowned babblers is influenced primarily by sex and age, but correlations with size of social unit, with reproductive success, and with vegetation are also detectable (Table 1). The latter correlations vary with sex, age, and status as helper or breeder. Differential wear according to behavioral role, competition for status, incubation, and inheritance are discussed as possible causal mechanisms. Helpers were not detectably smaller in any dimension than breeders of the same age and sex. Male and female non-breeding helpers differ in patterns of morphological correlation, suggesting that they have different behavioral roles. Breeding males have a unique pattern of morphological correlation, suggesting that their foraging behavior differs from breeding females and non-breeders.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the spinwave resonance linewidth in thin ferromagnetic metal films has been observed at 35 GHz in the temperature range 4 °K to 300 °K. The data are analyzed in terms of a two-magnon relaxation process induced by a planar inhomogeneity in the internal field of the film. The inhomogeneity is due to imperfections in the film structure introduced during deposition. The linewidth is found to decrease with increasing temperature in a manner similar to the temperature dependence of the magnetization with a mode dependence that is in reasonable agreement with the model proposed.

    Notes: Abstract Periphyton and plankton samples were collected at four littoral stations in a relatively shallow, eutrophic lake (Elk Lake, B.C., Canada) over a six month period from August 1967 to January 1968. The most abundant planktonic diatoms demonstrated a pattern of seasonal succession typical of temperate lakes, and all were present in the periphyton. This pattern was identical at all stations:Fragilaria crotonensis was dominant from August to October,Asterionella formosa in November and December, andMelosira italica (plusM. varians) in January.F. virescens, although never dominant, peaked in October. Periphyton communities were dominated byAchnanthes minutissima, Cocconeis placentula, F. crolonensis andF. virescens. Considerable station variation in successional patterns occurred over different exposure periods; station differences were least in those samples immersed for monthly intervals, and greatest in those immersed for a cumulative four-month period. Interaction between the phytoplankton and periphyton was illustrated by the occurrence of species common to both habitats. A decrease in cell numbers and percent abundance of these species in planktonic populations coincided with their increase in the periphyton, a relationship which appeared dependent on the breakdown of thermal stratification in November. For example, following turnover,F. crotonensis andA. formosa settled out of the plankton and correspondingly increased in percent abundance in the periphyton. This interdependence was less evident in the four-month samples, whereA. minutissima andC. placentula dominated throughout the entire period and appeared to out-compete the more typical planktonic components for diminishing substrate area. Species interaction or competition was accentuated as exposure duration and periphyton total cell standing crops increased and species diversity decreased, and appeared to account in part, for station differences in successional patterns.

    Notes: Real-time monitoring of pollutant levels from a mobile measuring platform requires fast, flexible data analysis methods. This paper reports a method for rapid analysis of passive remotely sensed infrared data with the aid of a Kalman filter. The background spectra produced by emission from the atmosphere are modelled at the start of the data collection sequence with a simple principal components model obtained by eigenanalysis of the initial ‘blank’ data taken with the spectrometer. The species of interest are included in the state space model by a separate measurement of their infrared spectra. It is demonstrated that for best filter performance in detecting the simulated pollutant species SF6 in the atmosphere, a filter model with two principal components describing the emission background works best. The filter ‘maps’ of SF6 closely follow the integrated spectral intensities measured after removal of suitable backgrounds.

    Notes: Abstract We have developed a new technique for the generation of YAC contigs in the mouse genome that is based on the ability to detect overlapping clones by hybridization of shared IRS-PCR products. As a demonstration of the technique, a 5-cM, 〉5 megabase contig was developed on the distal half of mouse Chromosome (Chr) 1, spanning the region from Lamb2 to At3. The contig covers roughly 5% of the genetic distance of the chromosome and is comprised of more than 80 clones; 71 probes were assigned physical order on the chromosome, of which 59 were new markers generated in this study. Eight of the new probes were shown to be polymorphic between C3H/HeJ-gld and M. spretus. Three probes were mapped on a [(C3H/HeJ-gld x M. spretus) x C3H/HeJ-gld] interspecific backcross to integrate the physical map with a high-resolution genetic map of the region.

    Notes: Abstract The mouse olfactory marker protein gene (Omp) maps close to the deafness mutation shaker-1 (sh-1) and has been considered a candidate gene for both sh-1 and its potential human homolog, the deaf-blind syndrome Usher Type I. Using primers devised from the available rat Olfactory Marker Protein gene sequence, we have determined the coding sequence of the mouse gene in both control inbred strains and six shaker-1 mutants. The coding sequence of the mouse Omp gene shows 97% nucleotide identity and 98% amino acid identity with the rat gene sequence. No sequence variants were detected in the coding region of any of the sh-1 mutants, ruling out Omp as the shaker-1 gene.

    Notes: Abstract DNA methylation at the promoter region of X-linked genes is associated with the maintenance of X inactivation in mammals. One of the methylated DNA binding proteins, MECP2, that binds to methylated bases in DNA is encoded by a gene (Mecp2) located on the mouse X Chromosome (Chr). To determine whether this gene was expressed from the inactive X Chr, and X-autosome translocation (T(X;16)16H) system in which expression from the Mecp2 allele on the inactive X Chr could be assayed was used. Results from these experiments indicate that Mecp2 is subject to X inactivation in mouse.

    Notes: Calcium aluminate bars were formulated to study the effect of real and simulated biological environments on strength. Static fatigue tests revealed that the strength of these potential internal bone prostheses decreased to ca. 60% of their initial strength after less than 100 min while being held at constant stress in solution. Calcium aluminate bars aged for 12 weeks in water or Ringer solution were also found to exhibit large losses in strength, while bars implanted in vivo for the same period of time weakened somewhat less. Semi-quantitative analysis of the solutions in which the calcium aluminate bars were aged revealed that Al3+ and Ca2+ were being leached from the bars in both the saline and water baths, while the concentration of Mg2+ was decreasing in the Ringer solution.Scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies revealed extensive microstructural changes in specimens aged in water or saline solution for 1 and 12 weeks. Similar but far less extensive changes were seen in bars aged in vivo in rabbits for 12 weeks.
