    Description: It is hoped that through the cultivation of a crew of volunteer citizen seismologists, public involvement could be encouraged and the discovery and inquiry into earthquake knowledge could be promoted. These volunteers can contribute to data collection, analysis, and reporting, and have the potential to greatly improve the emergency response to earthquakes. The Citizen Seismologists in Taiwan Project (CSTaiwan) is designed to elevate the quality of earthquake science education by incorporating earthquake and tsunami stories and educational earthquake games into traditional school curricula. The project aims to build a cloud-based computing service incorporating an earthquake school (i.e., a website for online learning) where teachers can easily teach their students about earthquakes and children can learn about earthquakes in a fun environment. Here we demonstrate how students perform P - and S -wave picking and measure seismic intensity through an interactive learning platform, how scientists and school teachers work together, and how we create a near-real-time earthquake games competition to facilitate continuous learning while making earthquake science fun. We also develop 49 questions associated with participants’ preknowledge, attitude, and skills in earthquake sciences, called Citizen Seismological Literacy (CSL). The CSL model may serve as an example to quantify citizen’s background in earthquake sciences and could be applied as a framework for seismologists around the world who wish to approach the public for educational purposes, while considering promoting the public’s seismologic literacy.

    Description: A significant seismic quiescence in Taiwan was reported by Wu and Chiao (2006) before the occurrence of the 1999 M w  7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake. A similar kind of activity was also observed in the 2012 earthquake catalog reported by Central Weather Bureau (CWB). Seven months in the 2012 catalog seem to have lower monthly seismicity rates than the one standard deviation below the mean (673±82) for earthquakes with M L ≥2.0. Here, we checked the seismic network in Taiwan and found that some new seismic stations, including the Broadband Array in Taiwan for Seismology (BATS), were incorporated within the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau Seismic Network (CWBSN) since 2012. Most of these BATS stations are located on hard-rock sites, which may affect magnitude estimation because of their site characteristics. To account for the impact of site effect, earthquake catalog data during the period of 1994 to 2014 was collected and station correction was calculated for each station. A strong correlation is found between station corrections determined in this study and geological settings of the region. Stations located on soil sites have high amplifications with negative station corrections. On the other hand, stations located on hard-rock sites have low amplifications with positive station corrections. After applying station correction, the mean seismicity rate is found to be 716 events per month with a standard deviation of 76 events for earthquakes with M L ≥2.0. We conclude that the reason behind the apparent low seismicity in 2012 is due to the installation of new seismic stations on rock sites, which lead to underestimation of M L .

    Description: Anomalous seismicity patterns in epicentral and surrounding areas have been shown to occur prior to large earthquakes, although the processes determining the spatial distribution and migration patterns of such seismicity are still poorly understood. We applied the improved pattern informatics (PI) method to earthquake data maintained by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) for a broad region including northeastern inland Japan and the source area of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, in order to reveal the precursory processes of the earthquake and its related statistical features. In particular, we focused on the spatial distribution and migration patterns of PI hotspots, which highlight areas of anomalous seismic activity. Our results show that such hotspots had been approaching the epicenter of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake from 2000 until the earthquake occurred. The possibility that this result was obtained by chance was rejected at the 95% confidence level based on Molchan’s error diagram. Our result supports the hypothesis that the preparatory processes of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake included anomalous seismic activity and its migration toward the epicenter of the earthquake.

    Description: To assess the impact of rising atmospheric CO2 and eutrophication on the carbonate chemistry of the East China Sea shelf waters, saturation states (Ω) for two important biologically-relevant carbonate minerals, calcite (Ωc) and aragonite (Ωa) were calculated throughout the water column from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) data collected in spring and summer of 2009. Results show that the highest Ωc (~9.0) and Ωa (~ 5.8) values were found in surface water of the Changjiang plume area in summer, whereas the lowest values (Ωc=~2.7 and Ωa=~1.7) were concurrently observed in the bottom water of the same area. This divergent behavior of saturation states in surface and bottom waters was driven by intensive biological production and strong stratification of the water column. The high rate of phytoplankton production, stimulated by the enormous nutrient discharge from the Changjiang, acts to decrease the ratio of DIC to TA, and thereby increases Ω values. In contrast, remineralization of organic matter in the bottom water acts to increase the DIC to TA ratio, and thus decreases Ω values. The projected result shows that continued increases of atmospheric CO2 under the IS92a emission scenario will decrease Ω values by 40–50% by the end of this century, but both the surface and bottom waters will remain supersaturated with respect to calcite and aragonite. Nevertheless, superimposed on such Ω decrease is increasing eutrophication, which would mitigate or enhance the Ω decline caused by anthropogenic CO2 uptake in surface and bottom waters, respectively. Our simulation reveals that under the combined impact of eutrophication and augmentation of atmospheric CO2, the bottom water of the Changjiang plume area will become undersaturated with respect to aragonite (Ωa=~0.8) by the end of this century, which would threaten the health of the benthic ecosystem.

We focused on 12 large earthquakes with magnitudes larger than M = 6.4 (an official magnitude of the Japan Meteorological Agency) that occurred at depths shallower than 30 km between 2000 and 2010. We examined the relation between the spatiotemporal locations of such large shallow earthquakes and those of PI hotspots, which correspond to the grid cells of anomalous seismic activities in a designated time span. Based on a statistical test using Molchan's error diagram, we inquired into the existence of precursory anomalous seismic activities of the large earthquakes and, if any, their characteristic time span. The test indicated that the Japanese M ≧ 6.4 inland earthquakes tend to be preceded by anomalous seismic activities of 8-to-10-yr time scales.
