    Notes: A compressible lattice model with holes, the glassy polymer lattice sorption model (GPLSM), was used to model the sorption of carbon dioxide, methane, and ethylene in glassy polycarbonate and carbon dioxide in glassy tetramethyl polycarbonate. For glassy polymers, an incompressible lattice model, such as the Flory-Huggins theory, requires concentration-dependent and physically unrealistic values for the lattice site volumes in order to satisfy lattice incompressibility. Rather than forcing lattice incompressibility, GPLSM was used and reasonable parameter values were obtained. The effect of conditioning on gas sorption in glassy polymers was analyzed quantitatively with GPLSM. The Henry's law constant decreases significantly upon gas conditioning, reflecting changes in the polymer matrix at infinite dilution. Treating the Henry's law constant as a hypothetical vapor pressure at infinite dilution, gas molecules in the conditioned polymer are less “volatile” than those in the unconditioned polymer. Flory-Huggins theory was used to model the sorption of carbon dioxide, methane, and ethylene in silicone rubber. Above the glass transition temperature, the criterion of lattice incompressibility for Flory-Huggins theory was satisfied with physically realistic and constant values for the lattice site volumes. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Theories and models are presented for gas sorption in polymers above and below the glass transition temperature. With the exception of predictive theories that do not represent the data well, the models are fit to data for the carbon dioxide/silicone rubber and carbon dioxide/polycarbonate systems for the purposes of comparison. During the past decade, a number of new models and theories have been proposed specifically for gas sorption in glassy polymers. Each new model attempts to incorporate aspects of the gas sorption process that are unique to polymers below the glass transition temperature. This review discusses these recent advances, the assumptions used in their development and their advantages and disadvantages.

    Description: Diagnosis is one of the most important processes in the medical field. Since the knowledge domains of clinical specialties are expanding rapidly in terms of complexity and volume of data, clinicians have, in many cases, difficulties to make an accurate diagnosis. Therefore, intelligent and quantitative support for diagnostic tasks can be effectively exploited for improving the effectiveness of the process and reduce misdiagnosis. In this respect, Multi-Classifier Systems represent one of the most promising approaches within Machine Learning methodologies. This paper proposes a Multi-Classifier Systems framework for supporting diagnostic activities with the aim of improving diagnostic accuracy. The framework uses and combines several classification algorithms by dynamically selecting the most competent classifier according to the test sample and its location in the feature space. Here, we extend our previous research. The new experimental results, compared with several multi classifier techniques, based on dynamic classifier selection, on classification datasets, show that the performance of the proposed framework exceeds the state-of-the-art dynamic classifier selection techniques.

    Description: Essential oils (EOs) are known to possess a number of beneficial properties. Their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and cancer-preventing activities have been extensively reported. Due to their wide use as food preservers and additives, as well as their use in agriculture, perfumes, and make-up products, these complex mixtures of volatile compounds have gained importance from a commercial point of view, not only in the pharmaceutical industry, but also in agronomic, food, cosmetic, and perfume industries. An analysis of the recent scientific literature allowed us to highlight the presence of an increasing number of studies on the potential antiarthritic properties of EOs and their main constituents, which seems to suggest a new interesting potential therapeutic application. The aim of this review is to examine the current knowledge on the beneficial effects of essential oils in the treatment of arthritic diseases, providing an overview of the reports on the in vivo and in vitro effects of EOs. Furthermore, this review critically examines the recent findings on the potential roles of the main components of EOs in the exerted beneficial effects. Obtained negative results are also reported.

    Description: Background: Since haemodialysis is a lifesaving therapy, adequate control measures are necessary to evaluate its adequacy and to constantly adjust the dose to reduce hospitalisation and prolong patient survival. Malnutrition is common in haemodialysis patients and closely related to morbidity and mortality. Patients undergoing haemodialysis have a high prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition and inflammation, along with abnormal iron status. The haemodialysis dose delivered is an important predictor of patient outcome. Aim: To evaluate through haemodialysis adequacy, which parameter(s), if any, better predict Kt/V, among those used to assess nutritional status, inflammation response, and iron status. Methods: We retrospectively studied 78 patients undergoing haemodialysis due to end-stage renal disease. As parameters of nutritional status, geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI), transferrin levels, lymphocyte count, and albumin concentration were analysed. As signs of inflammation, C reactive protein (CRP) levels and ferritin concentrations were studied as well. Iron status was evaluated by both transferrin and ferritin levels, as well as by haemoglobin (Hb) concentration. Results: The core finding of our retrospective study is that transferrin levels predict the adequacy of haemodialysis expressed as Kt/V; the latter is the only predictor (P = 0.001) when adjusting for CRP concentrations, a solid marker of inflammation, and for ferritin levels considered an iron-storage protein, but also a parameter of inflammatory response. Discussion and Conclusion: In keeping with the results of this study, we underline that the use of transferrin levels to assess haemodialysis quality combine into a single test the evaluation of the three most important factors of protein-energy wasting.

    Description: Pancreatic lipase, a key enzyme for lipid absorption, is one of the most important targets for the treatment of obesity, while natural compounds have recently attracted much interest as potential inhibitors of this enzyme. Here, in an attempt to find new effective agents, the methanolic extract from Moricandia arvensis (L.) DC. and its sub-extracts were investigated for their potential inhibitory activity. The ability to inhibit pancreatic lipase was verified through the in vitro evaluation of the prevention of p-nitrophenyl caprylate hydrolysis. The antioxidant activity was also verified by means of DPPH and β-carotene bleaching tests. Compositional profiling revealed that flavonoid glycosides were the main specialized metabolites present in the methanolic extract from the aerial parts of the plant with kaempferol and quercetin representing the two O-glycosylated aglycones. Kaempferol-3-O-β-(2″-O-glucosyl)-rutinoside and kaempferol-3-O-a-arabinosyl-7-O-rhamnoside were the most abundant flavonols. The crude methanolic extract and the dichloromethane and ethyl acetate sub-extracts showed a strong lipase inhibitory activity, with IC50 values of 2.06 ± 0.02, 1.52 ± 0.02 and 1.31 ± 0.02 mg/mL, respectively. The best capacity to scavenge DPPH radical was detected for the ethyl acetate sub-extract (IC50 = 171.9 ± 1.0 µg/mL), which was also effective in protecting linoleic acid from peroxidation (IC50 = 35.69 ± 2.30 µg/mL). Obtained results support the hypothesis that M. arvensis can be a source of bioactive phytochemicals for the pharmacological inhibition of dietary lipids absorption.

    Description: Common onion (Allium cepa L.) is one of the oldest cultivated plants, utilized worldwide as both vegetable and flavouring. This species is known to contain sulphur amino acids together with many vitamins and minerals. A variety of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, phytosterols and saponins, have also been identified. Despite the predominant use of this plant as food, a wide range of beneficial effects have also been proved. Different biological properties, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and antidiabetic, have been reported. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the studies concerning the beneficial effects of this species against obesity and its related comorbidities, such as hyperlipidaemia, hypertension and diabetes. Both in vitro and in vivo results about onion dietary supplementation have been taken into account. Furthermore, this review examines the possible role of onion bioactive components in modulating or preventing weight-gain or related diseases, as well as the possible mechanisms behind their activity.

    Description: Psoriasis is one of the most common human skin disorders. Although its pathogenesis is complex and not completely know, the hyperactivation of the immune system seem to have a key role. In this regard, among the most effective systemic therapeutics used in psoriasis, we find cyclosporine, an immunosuppressive medication. However, one of the major problems associated with the use of cyclosporine is the occurrence of systemic side effects such as nephrotoxicity, hypertension, etc. The present work fits in this context and its aim is the design of suitable platforms for cyclosporine topical release in psoriasis treatment. The main objective is to achieve local administration of cyclosporine in order to reduce its systemic absorption and, consequently, its side effects. In order to improve dermal penetration, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are used as carriers, due to their lipophilicity and occlusive properties, and naringenin and linolenic acid are chosen, due to their properties, as starting materials for SLNs design. In order to have dermatological formulations and further modulate drug release, SLNs are incorporated in several topical vehicles obtaining gels with different degree of lipophilicity. Potential applications for psoriasis treatment were evaluated by considering the encapsulation efficiency, release profiles, in vitro skin permeation, and anti-inflammatory effects.
