    Description: The liquid-solid composite technique was used to prepare the high carbon high chromium steel (HCHCS) and low alloy steel (LCS) bimetal composite materials by means of insert casting method. The influence of some process parameters such as liquid-solid ratio, preheat temperature, pouring temperature on the interface microstructure and mechanical properties were studied. Interface microstructure and element distribution were analyzed. The results show that the interface microstructure becomes better, and bonding area becomes thicker with the increase of the volume of liquid to solid ratio, preheating temperature and pouring temperature. When the liquid-solid ratio is 8:1, the preheating temperature is 300 °C and the pouring temperature is 1565 °C, a good metallurgical bonding area without any hole can be obtained with the interface combination of diffusion and fusion.     Description: Quantum emitters (QEs) coupled to structured baths can localize multiple photons around them and form qubit-photon bound states. In the Markovian or weak coupling regime, the interaction of QEs through these single-photon bound states is known to lead to effective many-body QE Hamiltonians with tuneable but yet perturbative interactions. In this work we study the emergence of such models in the non-Markovian or strong coupling regime in different excitation subspaces. The effective models for the non-Markovian regime with up to three excitations are characterized using analytical methods, uncovering the existence of doublons or triplon states. Furthermore, we provide numerical results for systems with multiple excitations and demonstrate the emergence of polariton models with optically tuneable interactions, whose many-body ground state exhibits a superfluid-Mott insulator transition.

    Description: Frequently occurred algal blooms in the tributary areas of Three Gorges Reservoir have been demonstrated to be closely related to the density currents in earlier studies. This paper aims at studying the vertical distribution of motile phytoplankton in density currents. To achieve this objective, particle image velocimetry and planar laser induced fluorescence techniques were used to measure the velocity filed and the algal distribution in lock-exchange density currents. The vertical distribution of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells was gained, which was characterized by a lower concentration region above the interface and a higher concentration region below the interface. Moreover, the mechanism of this vertical concentration profile was discussed. The results are essential to understand the mechanisms of the appearance and disappearance of algal blooms in the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

    Description: Seawater flushing was introduced in Hong Kong since 1950’s. High salinity has an inhibitory effect on nitrification and biological phosphorus uptake of microorganisms.     Description: To assess the impact of rising atmospheric CO2 and eutrophication on the carbonate chemistry of the East China Sea shelf waters, saturation states (Ω) for two important biologically-relevant carbonate minerals, calcite (Ωc) and aragonite (Ωa) were calculated throughout the water column from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) data collected in spring and summer of 2009. Results show that the highest Ωc (~9.0) and Ωa (~ 5.8) values were found in surface water of the Changjiang plume area in summer, whereas the lowest values (Ωc=~2.7 and Ωa=~1.7) were concurrently observed in the bottom water of the same area. This divergent behavior of saturation states in surface and bottom waters was driven by intensive biological production and strong stratification of the water column. The high rate of phytoplankton production, stimulated by the enormous nutrient discharge from the Changjiang, acts to decrease the ratio of DIC to TA, and thereby increases Ω values. In contrast, remineralization of organic matter in the bottom water acts to increase the DIC to TA ratio, and thus decreases Ω values. The projected result shows that continued increases of atmospheric CO2 under the IS92a emission scenario will decrease Ω values by 40–50% by the end of this century, but both the surface and bottom waters will remain supersaturated with respect to calcite and aragonite. Nevertheless, superimposed on such Ω decrease is increasing eutrophication, which would mitigate or enhance the Ω decline caused by anthropogenic CO2 uptake in surface and bottom waters, respectively. Our simulation reveals that under the combined impact of eutrophication and augmentation of atmospheric CO2, the bottom water of the Changjiang plume area will become undersaturated with respect to aragonite (Ωa=~0.8) by the end of this century, which would threaten the health of the benthic ecosystem.

    Description: For revealing the preparatory processes of large inland earthquakes, we systematically applied the Pattern Informatics method (PI method) to the earthquake data of Japan. We focused on 12 large earthquakes with magnitudes larger than M = 6.4 (an official magnitude of the Japan Meteorological Agency) that occurred at depths shallower than 30 km between 2000 and 2010. We examined the relation between the spatiotemporal locations of such large shallow earthquakes and those of PI hotspots, which correspond to the grid cells of anomalous seismic activities in a designated time span. Based on a statistical test using Molchan's error diagram, we inquired into the existence of precursory anomalous seismic activities of the large earthquakes and, if any, their characteristic time span. The test indicated that the Japanese M ≧ 6.4 inland earthquakes tend to be preceded by anomalous seismic activities of 8-to-10-yr time scales.
