    Description: The Amazon Basin plays key roles in the carbon and water cycles, climate change, atmospheric chemistry, and biodiversity. It already has been changed significantly by human activities, and more pervasive change is expected to occur in the next decades. It is therefore essential to establish long-term measurement sites that provide a baseline record of present-day climatic, biogeochemical, and atmospheric conditions and that will be operated over coming decades to monitor change in the Amazon region as human perturbations increase in the future. The Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) has been set up in a pristine rain forest region in the central Amazon Basin, about 150 km northeast of the city of Manaus. An ecological survey including a biodiversity assessment has been conducted in the forest region surrounding the site. Two 80 m towers have been operated at the site since 2012, and a 325 m tower is nearing completion in mid-2015. Measurements of micrometeorological and atmospheric chemical variables were initiated in 2012, and their range has continued to broaden over the last few years. The meteorological and micrometeorological measurements include temperature and wind profiles, precipitation, water and energy fluxes, turbulence components, soil temperature profiles and soil heat fluxes, radiation fluxes, and visibility. A tree has been instrumented to measure stem profiles of temperature, light intensity, and water content in cryptogamic covers. The trace gas measurements comprise continuous monitoring of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ozone at 5 to 8 different heights, complemented by a variety of additional species measured during intensive campaigns (e.g., VOC, NO, NO2, and OH reactivity). Aerosol optical, microphysical, and chemical measurements are made above the canopy as well as in the canopy space. They include light scattering and absorption, aerosol fluorescence, number and volume size distributions, chemical composition, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations, and hygroscopicity. Initial results from ecological, meteorological, and chemical studies at the ATTO site are presented in this paper.

    Description: Seafloor methane release can significantly affect the global carbon cycle and climate. Appreciable quantities of methane are stored in continental margin sediments as shallow gas and hydrate deposits, and changes in pressure, temperature and/or bottom-currents can liberate significant amounts of this greenhouse gas. Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of marine methane deposits and their relationships to environmental change are critical for assessing past and future carbon cycle and climate change. Here we present foraminiferal stable carbon isotope and sediment mineralogy records suggesting for the first time that seafloor methane release occurred along the southern Brazilian margin during the last glacial period (40–20 cal ka BP). Our results show that shallow gas deposits on the southern Brazilian margin responded to glacial−interglacial paleoceanographic changes releasing methane due to the synergy of sea level lowstand, warmer bottom waters and vigorous bottom currents during the last glacial period. High sea level during the Holocene resulted in an upslope shift of the Brazil Current, cooling the bottom waters and reducing bottom current strength, reducing methane emissions from the southern Brazilian margin.

    Description: Solar Energy has been, since the beginning of human civilization, a source of energy that raised considerable interest, and the technology used for their exploitation has developed constantly. Due to the energetic problems which society has been facing, the development of technologies to increase the efficiency of solar systems is of paramount importance. The solar concentration is a technology that has been used for many years by the scientist, because this system enables the concentration of solar energy in a focus, which allows a significant increase in energy intensity. The receiver, placed at the focus of the concentrator, can use the stored energy to produce electrical energy through Stirling engine, for example, or to produce thermal energy by heating a fluid that can be used in a thermal cycle. The efficiency of solar concentrators can be improved with the addition of a dual axis solar tracker system which allows a significant increase in the amount of stored energy. In response to the aforementioned, this paper presents the design and construction of a solar dish concentrator with tracking system at low cost, the optical and thermal modelling of this system and a performance analysis through experimental tests. The experimental validation allows to conclude that the application of a tracking system to the concentrator is very important since a minimum delay of the solar radiation leads to important losses of system efficiency. On the other hand, it is found that the external factors can affect the final results which include the optical and geometrical properties of the collector, the absorptivity and the position of the receiver as well as the weather conditions (essentially the wind speed and clouds). Thus, the paper aims to present the benefits of this technology in a world whose the consumption of energy by fossil fuels is a real problem that society needs to face.

    Description: Curimatídeos do gênero Cyphocharax Fowler, 1906 distribuem-se amplamente nas bacias hidrográficas da América do Sul, contudo essa ampla distribuição inequivale a quantidade de trabalhos relacionados ao gênero. Visto isso, objetivou-se contribuir ao conhecimento de Cyphocarax gouldingi (Vari, 1992) através da caracterização morfométrica de indivíduos coletados na microbacia do rio Praquiquara, localizado no médio Apeú, Amazônia Oriental. Para a determinação morfométrica da espécie, utilizou-se o software Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended, mensurando os respectivos caracteres merísticos: comprimentos total, padrão, zoológico, cabeça e focinho, a medida da altura e o diâmetro do olho de 178 exemplares capturados entre os meses setembro (2014) e maio (2015). Verificou-se uma correlação forte positiva e alometria negativa, entre o comprimento total e as demais medidas externas, e observou a importância do rio Praquiquara durante o ciclo de vida da espécie. Conclui-se que as medidas morfométricas de C. gouldingi (1) satisfazem a estimação de comprimento total e (2) possibilitam o estudo sobre a dinâmica de crescimento da espécie estudada.

    Description: The North Brazil Current in the western equatorial Atlantic is the main route for poleward heat transfer and therefore is a key component of the climate system. To understand the parameters that influence this region, we present a paleoceanographic reconstruction of the last 40 kyr based on study of sediment core MC 10/3. This reconstruction is based on: i) the oxygen isotope composition of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white); ii) census counts of the planktonic foraminifera assemblage to estimate sea surface temperature (SST) via the Modern Analogue Technique (SSTMAT) and to deduce characteristics of the water column; and iii) values of δ18Oivc-sw (a proxy for sea surface salinity (SSS)). The oxygen isotope composition of G. ruber showed a strong shift of greater than 1‰ after 21 cal kyr BP. Such a change can be attributed mainly to a salinity reduction of two units, as well as a slight SST increase (~ 1 °C), between 21 and 17.5 kyr BP. This change may be related to a southward displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and its belt of convective activity, which would have increased precipitation over the region and diminished surface salinity. The structure of the planktonic foraminiferal assemblage also indicates such conditions. The productive/thermocline-dwelling Globigerinita glutinata showed higher abundance prior to 21 cal kyr BP. Other productive/deep-dwellers, i.e., Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Globorotalia truncatulinoides (left- and right-coiling) and Globorotalia inflata, were slightly more abundant prior to 21 cal kyr BP and became less frequent with the development of low-salinity surface water that created more stratified and oligotrophic conditions in the water column. However, the warm/oligotrophic surface-dwellers (G. ruber, Globigerinoides sacculifer and Globigerinella siphonifera) became more abundant after 21 cal kyr BP. The species Globorotalia menardii was nearly absent during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), and its growth in abundance, mainly after 17.5 cal kyr BP, may indicate the resumption of the Agulhas leakage, which would have reached the study area via the South Equatorial Current (SEC). The return of high salinity values synchronous with the G. menardii increase also denotes the influence of Agulhas leakage into the western equatorial Atlantic.
