Description: The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/ψ production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at $ sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L int = 5.6 nb−1. The fraction of J/ψ from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/ψ candidates with transverse momentum p t 〉 1.3 GeV/c and rapidity |y| 1.3 GeV/c, |y| 1.3 GeV/c and |y| 1.3 GeV/c, |y| 〈 0.9) = 1.46 ± 0.38 (stat.) $ _{-0.32}^{+0.26 } $ (syst.) μb. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p t and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the $ mathrm{b}overline{mathrm{b}} $ pair total cross section and dσ/dy at mid-rapidity.

Description: We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at $ sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ and 7TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p T,LT in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p T thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2–3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p T threshold considered. Data are compared to Pythia 6.4, Pythia 8.1 and Phojet. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p T in the Transverse region by about 10–30%.

Notes: Abstract We study rigid motions of a rectangle amidst polygonal obstacles. The best known algorithms for this problem have a running time of Ω(n 2), wheren is the number of obstacle corners. We introduce thetightness of a motion-planning problem as a measure of the difficulty of a planning problem in an intuitive sense and describe an algorithm with a running time ofO((a/b · 1/ɛcrit + 1)n(logn)2), wherea ≥b are the lengths of the sides of a rectangle and ɛcrit is the tightness of the problem. We show further that the complexity (= number of vertices) of the boundary ofn bow ties (see Figure 1) isO(n). Similar results for the union of other simple geometric figures such as triangles and wedges are also presented.

Notes: Abstract Recently, we proposed the hypothesis that a vicious cycle exists in human hibernating myocardium (HM) between the progression of myocyte degeneration and the development of fibrosis [1]. We now investigated the pathomechanism of this cycle in more detail and established a correlation between the severity of the morphological changes and the degree of postoperative functional recovery of HM. HM was diagnosed by dobutamine echocardiography, thallium-201 scintigraphy and radionuclide ventriculography. Functional recovery was present at 3 months after coronary bypass surgery but remained unchanged at 15 months. Forty patients were subdivided into 2 groups: A with complete and B with incomplete recovery. Biopsies taken during surgery and studied by electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, rt-PCR, and morphometry revealed myocyte degeneration and inflammatory and fibrinogenic changes in a widened interstitial space. We report here for the first time an upregulation of TGF-β1 evident by a 5-fold increase of fibroblasts and macrophages exhibiting a TGF-β1 content 3-fold larger than in control, and a 〉 3-fold increase in TGF-β1 mRNA by rt-PCR. The number of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) containing structures was increased (n/mm2: control - 11.4, A - 17.6, B - 19.2, control vs. A and B, p 〈 0.05). Fibrosis was more severe in group B than A or control (%: C - 10.1; A - 21.2; B - 40.6; p 〈 0.05). Capillary density was significantly reduced (n/mm2: C - 1152; A - 782; B - 579, p 〈 0.05) and intercapillary distance was widened (μm: C - 29.5, A - 36.1, B - 43.3, p 〈 0.05). The number of CD 3 (n/mm2: C - 5.0; A - 9.6; B - 9.4, ns) and CD 68 positive cells (n/mm2: C - 37.2; A - 80.7; B - 55.0, C vs. A p 〈 0.05) was elevated in HM as compared to control indicating an inflammatory reaction. Cut-off points for functional recovery are fibrosis 〉 32%, capillary density 〈 660/mm2 and intercapillary distance 〉 39.0 μm. In HM a self-perpetuating vicious cycle of tissue alterations leads to progressive replacement fibrosis and continuous intracellular degeneration which should be interrupted by early revascularization.

Notes: Abstract The parallel β/α-barrel domain consisting of eight parallel β-sheets surrounded by eight α-helices has been currently identified in crystal structures of more than 20 enzymes. This type of protein folding motif makes it possible to catalyze various biochemical reactions on a variety of substrates (i.e., it seems to be robust enough so that different enzymatic functionalities could be designed on it). In spite of many efforts aimed at elucidation of evolutionary history of the present-day β/α-barrels, a challenging question remains unanswered: How has the parallel β/α-barrel fold arisen? Although the complete sequence comparison of all β/α-barrel amino acid sequences is not yet available, several sequence similarities have been revealed by using the highly conserved regions of α-amylase as structural templates. Since many starch-processing enzymes adopt the parallel β/α-barrel structure these enzymes might be useful in the search for evolutionary relationships of the whole parallel eight-folded β/α-barrel enzyme family.

Notes: Abstract Ecdysteroids play an important role in the larval moulting process of insects. Ecdysone-induced stimulation causes specific “puffs” in polytene chromosomes of salivary gland cells resulting in nuclear swelling. During this process, changes of intracellular ion composition are thought to act as an early regulatory mechanism of gene activation. By use of video-imaging analysis and electrophysiological techniques, we examined ecdysone-induced nuclear swelling in Drosophila salivary glands in situ and its dependence on pH and calcium. Isolated glands of the third larval stage were superfused with a solution mimicking the haemolymph. Addition of 5×10−6 mol/l 20-OH-ecdysone led, after a lag period of 50 min, to a sustained Ca2+-dependent increase of nuclear volume by 23.0±2.3%. Amiloride, a blocker of plasma membrane Na+/H+ exchange, prevented 20-OH-ecdysone-induced nuclear swelling. Decreasing pH in the superfusate from 7.15 to 6.8 led to nuclear shrinkage by 16.9±3.9%. Measurments of pH in salivary gland cells with ion-sensitive microelectrodes disclosed an alkalinization of 0.23±0.05 pH units after stimulation with 20-OH-ecdysone. We postulate that 20-OH-ecdysone activates the amilorde-sensitive plasma membrane Na+/H+ exchanger. This leads to intracellular alkalinization and concomitant decondensation of the nuclear chromatin visible as nuclear swelling. Thus, cell alkalinization could be a potentially important stimulatory mechanism in mediating ecdysteroid-induced activation of the cell nucleus.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. The present investigation was done to study the intestinal absorption of three oxytocin peptide analogues and to elucidate the role of pancreatic juice on their absorption. Methods. In conscious chronically catheterized pigs (6–8 weeks of age) plasma concentration of the peptides, [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Thr4, Orn8]-oxytocin (F314), [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Val4, D-Arg8]-oxytocin (CAT), and [Mpa1, D-Tyr(Ethyl)2, Thr4, Orn8, desGly9, carba6]-oxytocin (F327) after intraduodenal administration, during presence or diversion of the pancreatic juice via a pancreatic duct catheter, were determined by radioimmunoassay. The stability of the peptides to degradation was determined in vitro by incubation with activated pancreatic juice, chymotrypsin or trypsin, followed by reversed phase HPLC analyses. Results. All peptides were absorbed with a bioavailability of about 0.5% in the presence of pancreatic juice, but increased to 1.0%, 2.1%, and 13.5% for F314, CAT, and F327, respectively, when the pancreatic juice was diverted from the intestine. After incubation with pancreatic juice 95% of F314, 98% of F327, and 100% of CAT was found intact. When incubated with trypsin CAT remained intact while F314 and F327 were degraded by 54% and 46%, respectively. Incubation with purified chymotrypsin did not degrade the test peptides. Conclusions. The results indicate that the increased absorption of peptides observed under conditions of diverted pancreatic juice cannot only be explained by the absence of pancreatic enzymes, but also by changed absorptive properties in the gastrointestinal tract.

Notes: Abstract. The paper refers to the Collatz's conjecture. In the first part, we present some equivalent forms of this conjecture and a slight generalization of a former result from [1]. Then, we present the notion of “chain subtrees” in Collatz's tree followed by a characterization theorem and some subclass of numbers which are labels for some chain subtrees. Next, we define the notion of “fixed points” and using this, we give another conjecture similar to Collatz's conjecture. Some new infinite sets of numbers for which the Collatz's conjecture holds are given. Finally, we present some interesting results related to the number of “even” and “odd” branches in the Collatz's tree.
