    Description: Δ14C values of leaves of deciduous trees provide a means to map the regional-scale fossil fuel ratio in the atmosphere. We collected a batch of ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba Linnaeus, a deciduous tree) leaf samples from across Korea in the month of July in both 2010 and 2011 to obtain the regional distribution of Δ14C. The Δ14C values of the samples were measured using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM). The average of the Δ14C values from clean air sites in Korea in 2011 measured slightly lower than the average of Δ14C values in 2010. Distribution maps of Δ14C of 2011 and 2010 in Korea were made based on a series of Δ14C values of ginkgo leaf samples from Korea using the Geostatistical and Spatial analyst tools in ESRI's ArcMap software. The distribution maps of Δ14C showed that Δ14C values in the western part of Korea are lower than those in the eastern part of Korea. This is because the western part of Korea is densely populated and contains many industrial complexes, and also because westerly winds from China, containing CO2 from fossil fuel use, blow into Korea. We compared the distribution maps of 2010 and 2011 and tried to find traces of the Fukushima power plant accident in Japan.

    Description: The accelerator mass spectrometry facility at the Seoul National University (SNU-AMS) was completed in December 1998 and a report was presented at the Vienna AMS conference in September 1999. At the conference, we described the basic components of our accelerator system and reported the results of the performance test. Since then, extensive testing of the accuracy and reproducibility of the system has been carried out, and about 200 unknown samples have been measured so far. We obtained a precision of 4‰ for modern samples, and an accuracy of approximately 40 yr was demonstrated by analyzing samples that were previously dated with a conventional technique and by other AMS laboratories. We present these results here, together with detailed descriptions of our data-taking and analysis procedures.

    Description: We present the current status of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) dating of iron artifacts at Seoul National University (SNU). In ancient iron production, charcoal was widely used as carbon for the smelting process, whereas coal is used in modern times. If reliable data could be obtained from carbon by using AMS, ancient iron artifacts could be traced to their production age. In normal acid treatment, it is not easy to extract carbon due to its colloidal property. The negative charge property of the carbon colloid, however, makes it possible for it to be precipitated with positive ions by dissolving the iron chemically. An extraction yield of the carbon incorporated in modern cast iron of about 70% is attained. More refined methods to increase the extraction rate are under progress for archaeological applications.

    Description: A method of thermal and acid treatments was developed at the Archaeo-metallurgy Laboratory of Hongik University in Korea to extract carbon from cast iron, and carbon objects thus prepared from cast iron artifacts of ancient Korea were dated at the University of Arizona's AMS Facility. The thermal treatments consist of heating a specimen to ∼1000 °C in a controlled environment with reduced oxygen potential, then cooling it rapidly to room temperature. The heating causes the cementite phase in white cast iron to be graphitized and the quenching suppresses pearlite formation. The specimen then consists of flakes of graphite embedded in a matrix of martensite. The next stage of the treatment is to dissolve the martensite matrix in a solution of nitric and hydrochloric acids to release the graphite as a powder. This material is then cleaned, dried, and pressed into target holders for accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) analysis. The method was applied to a collection of artifacts from the Korean Three Kingdoms period (about AD 300–668) and the AMS results were compared with chronological estimates from other means.

    Description: The relationship between temperature and time required for collagenization using modern bone samples was investigated. Gelatinized samples of bone collagen were filtered to selectively collect different molecular weight fractions. The results of this study suggest that heating to 70 ° for a duration of 12 hr provides the optimal conditions for gelatinization.

    Description: While it is customary to use solid samples for measuring the 14C/12C ratio, it is sometimes necessary to handle liquid or gas samples. Motivated by a scientific purpose to count radiocarbon yields in deuterated acetone irradiated with energetic neutrons, we developed a new combustion system to treat liquid or gas samples. In contrast with the typical combustion system using CuO for solid samples, the new combustion system uses high-purity O2 (99.999%) gas. As an initial investigation, we combusted deuterated acetone (acetone-d6, certified 100.0 atm % D) to make CO2 under the ambient O2 pressure. The resulting CO2 gas then went through the reduction process to form graphite for further accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurement.

    Description: The accelerator mass spectrometry facility at Seoul National University (SNU-AMS) began functioning in December 1998 and was first reported at the Vienna AMS conference in October 1999 and at the 17th International Radiocarbon Conference in Israel in June 2000. At the Vienna conference, we reported our accelerator system (Kim et al. 2000) and details of the basic sample preparation system (Lee et al. 2000), such as the combustion line to produce CO2; the catalytic reduction line for the graphitization of CO2; and the pretreatment procedures for wood, charcoal, and peat samples. The recent progress of the AMS facility (Kim et al. 2001) and the extension of the sample pretreatment system to iron and bone samples were reported at the 17th International Radiocarbon Conference (Cheoun et al. 2001). In the meantime, extensive testing of accuracy and reproducibility has been carried out, and ∼1000 unknown archaeological and geological samples have been measured every year. In this report, the archaeological, geological, and environmental data carried out in 1999 are presented in terms of yr BP.

    Description: We have observed A14C concentrations in the northern hemisphere temperate region in the bomb pulse period, using cross-dated tree ring samples. The tree-ring samples were taken from one 70-year-old and two 50-year-old red pines (Pinus densiflora) on Mt Chiak, Korea and from a 50-year-old red pine (Pinus densiflora) on Mt Kyeryong, Korea. Twenty-two tree-ring samples from four red pines ranging from 1950 to 2000 AD were pretreated to obtain holo-cellulose, combusted to CO2 by an element analyzer (EA) and converted to graphite for δ14C measurement using the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facility at Seoul National University. Our results for δ14C showed good agreement with those measured by other researchers at similar latitudes. The observed steady decrease of δ14C from 1965 to 2000 AD is described by a single exponential function with a lifetime τ = 15.99 ± 0.43 yr. This lifetime is similar to that of the high-latitude region in Europe.

    Description: Various carbon structures, including carbon nanofilament (CNF), single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT), multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), and pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS), were exposed in air to determine how they vary according to carbon structure and air temperature. CNF is the carbon structure used in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating (Santos et al. 2007). When CNF and MWCNT were exposed in cold air (3 or −18 °C) for longer than 6 hr, their 14C/12C ratio increased (〉5 × 10–14). When heated in an oven (200 or 250 °C) for longer than 12 hr, their 14C/12C ratio decreased. However, when SWCNT and PGS were exposed in air cooled to 3 °C for 12 hr, their 14C/12C ratio did not increase. This phenomenon is very curious, and is useful for the development of a storage method for carbon samples made by reduction reactions of CO2.

    Description: Ensemble-averaged statistics at constant phase of the turbulent near-wake flow (Reynolds number « 21400) around a square cylinder have been obtained from two-component laser-Doppler measurements. Phase was defined with reference to a signal taken from a pressure sensor located at the midpoint of a cylinder sidewall. The distinction is drawn between the near wake where the shed vortices are ‘mature’ and distinct and a base region where the vortices grow to maturity and are then shed. Differences in length and velocity scales and vortex celerities between the flow around a square cylinder and the more frequently studied flow around a circular cylinder are discussed. Scaling arguments based on the circulation discharged into the near wake are proposed to explain the differences. The relationship between flow topology and turbulence is also considered with vorticity saddles and streamline saddles being distinguished. While general agreement with previous studies of flow around a circular cylinder is found with regard to essential flow features in the near wake, some previously overlooked details are highlighted, e.g. the possibility of high Reynolds shear stresses in regions of peak vorticity, or asymmetries near the stream-line saddle. The base region is examined in more detail than in previous studies, and vorticity saddles, zero-vorticity points, and streamline saddles are observed to differ in importance at different stages of the shedding process. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.
