Notes: Summary The localization of a plasma membrane calcium pump in the oviduct of the laying hen was investigated by immunohistochemical techniques, utilizing a monoclonal antibody (5F10) produced against the human erythrocyte calcium pump. This antibody was shown to react with an epitope of the pump in oviductal tissue, and prominent staining was observed on the microvilli of the tubular gland cells of the hen shell gland (uterus) and the isthmus. The Ca2+ pump was not detectable in the infundibulum or the magnum. Calbindin-D28k, also localized by immunohistochemical means, was observed to be present in the tubular gland cells of the shell gland and the distal isthmus (adjacent to shell gland) but not in either the proximal isthmus (adjacent to the magnum), the magnum or the infundibulum. The localization of the Ca2+ pump in the oviduct corresponds to known sites of mineral deposition during egg shell formation. The distribution of calbindin-D28k differed, co-localizing with the Ca2+ pump in the shell gland and distal isthmus but not in the proximal isthmus. This might reflect a greater rate of active Ca2+ secretion in the distal isthmus and shell gland as compared to the proximal isthmus.

Notes: In the Introduction to the first volume of The Letters of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (Cambridge, Mass., Belknap Press, 1966– ), Andrew Hilen recognizes that his edition can make no claim to completeness: there are still likely to come to light some of the early letters known to have been written but which he has been unable to trace. Though he considers it improbable that the rinding of lost correspondence will necessitate any fundamental reassessment of the poet's character or of his literary work, Hilen thinks it ‘nevertheless obvious that many of these unrecovered letters contained information that would interest both Longfellow's biographer and the critic of his poetry’ (pp. 4–5). These comments are perfectly applicable to the letters from Longfellow to Mrs Emma Marshall, nee Martin, which are to be found in Beatrice Marshall's memorial of her mother, Emma Marshall, a biographical sketch (London, Seeley & Co., 1900).

Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. A full understanding of the community ecology of coral reef fishes must be based on an understanding of how fishes interact to share the available resources of the reef environment. 2. The goal of such studies is the construction of suitable models that can be used to predict the effects of environmental changes. The validity of such predictions is a test of the adequacy of the model. 3. The data on which models can be based are obtained in a combination of three approaches: (a) sampling, (b) laboratory experiments and (c) direct observation. 4. Direct observations can be made by viewing from the surface, by the use of underwater chambers, by submersible vehicles, by underwater television and by diving. 5. The use of diving techniques is limited by visibility, temperature and depth. Diving time can be extended by saturated diving from an underwater habitat. 6. The critical areas for information about coral reef fish communities are: census, population dynamics, natural history and behavior, space sharing and food sharing. 7. Complex communities can be analyzed by successively categorizing the species according to each of these aspects until the unique niche of each species is defined. 8. The most pressing need in the study of coral reef fish ecology is for continuous monitoring of representative stations throughout complete seasonal cycles.

Notes: Abstract Phase singularities in an optical field appear as isolated dark spots and can be generated in active laser cavities or by computer generated holograms. Detection and categorization of these singularities can easily be achieved either by interferometry or Fourier transform pattern recognition using a computer generated hologram.

Notes: Abstract Recent progress in the development of XUV lasers by research teams using high-power and ultrashort-pulse Nd: glass and KrF laser facilities at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is reviewed. Injector-amplifier operation and prepulse enhanced output of the Ge XXIII collisional laser driven by a kilojoule glass laser, enhanced gain in CVI recombination with picosecond CPA drive pulses from a glass laser, and optical field ionization and XUV harmonic generation with a KrF CPA laser are described.

Notes: Abstract The spectral energy distributions and mid-infrared spectra of 44 carbon Mira variables are fitted using a dust radiative transfer model. The periods cover the entire range observed for carbon Miras. The luminosities are calculated from a period-luminosity relation. Parameters derived are the distance, the dust mass loss rate and the ratio of silicon carbide to amorphous carbon dust. The total mass loss rate is derived from a modified relation between the photon momentum (L/c) and the momentum in the wind (M υ∞). Mass loss rates between 1 × 10−8 and 4 × 10−5 M⊙ yr−1 are found. We find good correlations between mass loss rate and pulsation period, and mass loss rate and luminosity. The dust-to-gas ratio appears to be almost constant up to periods of about 500 days, corresponding to about 7900 L⊙, and then to increase by a factor of 5 towards longer periods and higher luminosities. A comparison is made with radiation-hydrodynamical calculations including dust formation. The mass loss rates predicted by these models are consistent with those derived in this paper. The main discrepancy is in the predicted expansion velocities for models with luminosities below ∼5000 L⊙. The radiation-hydrodynamical calculations predict expansion velocities which are significantly too large. This is related to the fact that these models need to be calculated with a large C/O ratio to get an outflow in the first place. This is contrary to observations. It indicates that a principle physical ingredient in these radiation-hydrodynamical calculations is still missing. Possibly the winds are ‘clumpy’ which may lead to dust formation on a local scale, or there is an additional outwards directed force, possibly radiation pressure on molecules.

Notes: Abstract. Various rescattering sources are analyzed in the context of the SU(3) flavor symmetry. In particular, the possibility to account for intermediate charm at the hadronic level in B to PP is thoroughly investigated. Then, the rescattering sources are compared in light of recent decay measurements of B to two charmless pseudoscalars, with emphasis on the size of strong phases and on patterns of direct CP-asymmetries.
