Notizen: Abstract Sole crops and intercrops of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and bean (Vicia faba L.), at three harvest dates, representing successive growth stages, were evaluated for biomass production of whole-crop forage and quality characteristics of crude protein (CP), neutral-detergent fibre (NDF), acid-detergent fibre (ADF), water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentrations and ash content. These tests were carried out for two field experiments, respectively, drilled during the spring of 1997 and autumn of 1997 on Imperial College Farm, Wye, UK. Results indicated that optimum forage yield and quality were obtained from the second to third harvest dates for the spring-drilled experiment and the second harvest for the autumn-drilled experiment. Wheat and bean intercrops were higher in total forage dry matter (DM) yield than either wheat or bean grown as sole crops. Field bean intercropped with wheat led to increased forage quality (CP and NDF concentrations) compared with sole wheat, and higher WSC concentrations compared with sole bean. Intercrops also enhanced weed suppression compared with sole bean. It is suggested that winter wheat–bean intercrops may have considerable potential as a moderate-yielding, relatively high-quality, low-input and environmentally benign forage crop with considerable potential with regard to yield and quality and warrant further study.

Notizen: Abstract We examine interference effects of the electrowcak interaction in the high energye ++e −→e + +e −+hadrons process. The effect provides a further test of the G-W-S model [1] and may lead to a better understanding of the photon structure functions.

Notizen: Abstract. We study the motion of a rigid body of arbitrary shape immersed in a viscous incompressible fluid in a bounded, three-dimensional domain. The motion of the rigid body is caused by the action of given forces exerted on the fluid and on the rigid body. For this problem, we prove the global existence of weak solutions.

Notizen: Summary The ‘cutting technique’ or ‘tuberisation stimulus’ (TS) technique was investigated as a method of identifying heat tolerant clones ofSolanum tuberosum ssp.tuberosum. TS levels were assessed, using leaf cuttings, for 100 experimental clones growing under heat stress in a controlled environment (35/15°C day/night temperatures, 16 h photoperiod). No correlation was found with the tuber yields of these clones when grown in an irrigated trial in Israel. The relationship between TS levels and tuber production was investigated using early and later maturing cultivars grown with and without heat stress. These experiments showed that the cv. Blanka had high TS levels in all environments and high tuber fresh weights when grown under heat stress. However, the correlation between TS levels and tuber fresh weight for all cultivars was weak (r=0.45). The results indicated that this TS technique is unlikely to be an accurate method of screeningtuberosum clones for heat tolerance.

Notizen: Summary Microtuber formation by single node stem segments of in vitro grown potato plantlets was used as a model system for investigation of heat inhibition of tuber development. The stem segments were incubated in darkness at 20°C or 26°C on a tuberisation medium containing benzyl aminopurine (140 μg 1−1) and sucrose (80 g 1−1). Continuous incubation at 26°C strongly inhibited tuberisation and exposure to 26°C for only 1 week before transfer to 20°C significantly reduced microtuber fresh weight. Inclusion of a gibberellin synthesis inhibitor, paclobutrazol (10−5 M), in the tuberisation medium counteracted the heat inhibition of tuber initiation but not the reduction of microtuber fresh weight. Thus, consistent with previous reports, inhibition of tuber initiation appears attributable to increased endogenous levels of gibberellins. Possible causes of the reduction in microtuber fresh weight are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We report the results of a quartz microbalance study of the multilayer adsorption of H2 and D2 on sodium and on rubidium. On sodium H2 and D2 display the well known phenomenon of triple-point wetting. Interestingly low temperature adsorption isotherms of H2 on the evaporated Na surface show sharp layering transitions. On rubidium a weaker substrate H2 and D2 undergo a wetting transition in the liquid phase followed by sharp presetting transitions away from liquid-vapor coexistence. The prewetting phase diagram of H2 on Rb has been quantitatively mapped out.

Notizen: Abstract By explicit calculation of radiative corrections to the self-energy and the three-vertex at one-loop level for Yang-Mills theories in the light-cone gauge, it is demonstrated that analytically regulated Feynman integrals defined by the principal value prescription satisfy the one, two, and three-point Ward identities. However, both the calculated self-energy and three-vertex have anomalous, unrenormalizable infinite parts, thus confirming the belief, based on previous calculations of only the self-energy, that the principal value prescription is seriously flawed in the light-cone gauge.

Notizen: Abstract The general one-loop three-vertexГ μeλ abc (p, q, r) in the four-component formulation of the Yang-Mills theory is calculated in the light-cone gauge. The nonvanishing counter Lagrangian constructed from this three-vertex and the self-energy is proportional to the original Lagrangian, the single renormalization constant being -11g2 C YM Г(2−ω)/48π2. Gauge dependent and nonlocal counterterms do not contribute to the renormalization constant, but are needed to verify the appropriate Slavnov-Taylor (ST) and Becchi-Rouet-Stora (BRS) identities.

Notizen: Abstract This investigation concerns the application of a special method of successive approximations to the solution of a practically motivated, nonlinear problem of the bending of a uniformly loaded circular plate supported on a concentric circle. Numerical results are obtained for a range of plate-radius/support-radius ratios, and the former are found to be in good agreement with the results of experiments.
