    Notes: Abstract In this paper, a method for indexing cross-language databases for conceptual query matching is presented. Two languages (Greek and English) are combined by appending a small portion of documents from one language to the identical documents in the other language. The proposed merging strategy duplicates less than 7% of the entire database (made up of different translations of the Gospels). Previous strategies duplicated up to 34% of the initial database in order to perform the merger. The proposed method retrieves a larger number of relevant documents for both languages with higher cosine rankings when Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) is employed. Using the proposed merge strategies, LSI is shown to be effective in retrieving documents from either language (Greek or English) without requiring any translation of a user's query. An effective Bible search product needs to allow the use of natural language for searching (queries). LSI enables the user to form queries with using natural expressions in the user's own native language. The merging strategy proposed in this study enables LSI to retrieve relevant documents effectively using a minimum of the database in a foreign language.

Let ΣФ = {R t Ф |t is recursive} and let ΩФ = { $$R_{\Phi _i } $$ |Фi is actually the running time function of a computation}. ΣФ and ΩФ are partially ordered under set-theoretic inclusion. These partial orderings have been extensively investigated by Borodin, Constable and Hopcroft in [3]. In this paper we present a simple uniform proof of some of their results. For example, we give a procedure for easily calculating a model of computational complexity Ф for which ΣФ is not dense while ΩФ is dense. In our opinion, our technique is so transparent that it indicates that certain questions of density are not intrinsically interesting for general abstract measures of computational complexity, Ф. (This is not to say that similar questions are necessarily uninteresting for specific models.)

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this paper is to show that there are sets for which really large improvements in enumeration times can only be achieved by programs which change the order in which the sets are enumerated and not by programs which merely speed up the enumeration times without changing the order in which the sets are enumerated. We do this by proving, in a suitably general context, the following analogue of the Blum speedup theorem: There are some infinite sets which are so difficult to enumerate that, given any order for enumerating the set, there is some other order and someone method of enumerating the set in this second order which is much faster thanany method of enumerating the set in the first ordering. The proof itself is one of the first nontrivial applications of priority methods to questions of computational complexity. (See also [8], [6], and [3] for more such applications.)

    Notes: Summary We have isolated Phe and Tyr tRNAs from Tetrahymena pyriformis mitochondria and have determined that these are “native” species, encoded by the mtDNA. A single gene for the tRNAPhe has been positioned 12–14 kbp from the left end of the linear Tetrahymena mtDNA, while duplicate tRNATyr genes have been localized within the inverted terminal repeats of this genome. Primary sequence analysis demonstrates that the tRNATyr has all of the characteristic primary and secondary structural features of a normal tRNA; however, the tRNAPhe displays several atypical features, including (i) replacement of the usual Tψ sequence by UC, (ii) a U - U pair in the TψC stem, and (iii) an extra 5′-nucleotide (U).

    Notes: Abstract Sod2 is the sodium-proton antiporter on the plasma membrane of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. It is vitally important for sodium export and pH homeostasis in this organism. Recently, the sod2 gene has been cloned and sequenced. However, initial attempts to express sod2 in Escherichia coli using the T7 promoter failed. In the present work we examined physiological consequences of expression of sod2 in E. coli. To alleviate problems caused by expression of sod2 we: (i) used sodium-free media at all steps; (ii) used the moderate tac promoter for expression and; (iii) used E. coli strain MH1 which has impaired sodium exchange. The effect of sod2 expression on E. coli varied depending on the E. coli genotype. When sod2 was expressed in BL21 cells which have normal N a+/H+ antiporters, the result was a Li+ sensitive phenotype. LiCl completely arrested or prevented growth of BL21 E. coli transformed with the sod2 gene. The effect on growth was pronounced in media of low external pH. Sod2 was then expressed in E. coli MH1 which is devoid of endogenous Na+/H+ antiporters. These cells became more resistant to external LiCl, but only in Na+ containing media. In the absence of external Na+, the presence of sod2 reduced growth. The results are explained in a model which demonstrates the physiological consequences of interference by expression of a foreign electroneutral Na+/H+ antiporter in conjunction with different housekeeping systems of E. coli host cells.

    Notes: Based on morphological evidence, mitochondrial inner membrane growth has been reported to be discontinuous in heat shock-synchronized Tetrahymena pyriformis. As a biochemical measure of membrane growth under these conditions, we have examined phospholipid accumulation in the cell. No marked modulation of the accumulation of any of the major phospholipids could be detected through the cell cycle. At least 89% of the cardiolipin in the cells is restricted to the mitochondria, and we have used it as a marker for the growth of the mitochondrial inner membrane. During the heat shock synchrony, cardiolipin accumulates uniformly in parallel with the exponential rate of increase of total cellular phospholipids. These results suggest that at least the phospholipid component of all membrane systems in the cell grow continuously and uniformly. Additionally, we have shown that the total phospholipid content of Tetrahymena increases by a factor of 2.4 per generation following a series of heat shocks. No such net overaccumulation is observed for protein content.
