Description: Knowledge of settlement timing and duration, which has been identified as an important milestone for demersal fish, is critical to understanding population connectivity, relevant to the development of spatially—and temporally—resolved conservation measures, and recruitment variability, as important density-dependent dynamics may take place at this stage. To study the settlement ecology of cod haddock, and whiting, sampling was conducted over spring and summer 2004–2006 at the northern North Sea nursery area. Over 4000 0-group juveniles were collected. Settlement was associated with clear and progressive changes in the prey composition of these juveniles. The size of fish that could be considered settled was estimated as 49 (±3) mm for cod, 78 (±4) mm for haddock, and 85 (±6) mm for whiting. Clear differences in temporal settlement patterns were also apparent. Cod settled in a single pulse lasting about a month (mid-May to mid-June) and initially occupied shallower, inshore waters, whereas haddock settled in one pulse, lasting ~2 weeks (second half of May), favouring deeper, farther offshore locations. Whiting settled much later in the season and over a more protracted period (early June to early August), and their depth preferences also changed over time and with increasing length.

Description: After long-term denervation of an upper limb in macaque monkeys, the representation of the face in somatosensory cortex expands over many millimeters into the silenced representation of the hand. Various brainstem and cortical mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon. Reorganization in the thalamus has been largely ignored. In monkeys with deafferented upper limbs for 12 to 20 years, it was found that the brainstem cuneate and the thalamic ventral posterior nuclei had undergone severe transneuronal atrophy, and physiological mapping in the thalamus revealed that the face and trunk representations were adjoined while the normally small representation of the lower face had expanded comparable to the expansion in cortex. Reorganization of brainstem and thalamic nuclei associated with slow transneuronal atrophy is likely to be a progressive process. When coupled with divergence of ascending connections, it is likely to make a substantial contribution to representational changes in cortex.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Jones, E G -- Pons, T P -- MH53369/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- NS21377/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- NS35246/NS/NINDS NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1998 Nov 6;282(5391):1121-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Center for Neuroscience, University of California-Davis, Davis, CA 95616, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9804550" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The function of process plant contractors is to design and engineer plants, supply process technology, procure plant equipment and supervise the construction and commissioning of plant for producers in various process industries such as chemicals, gas and steel. As such they play a major part in the process of capital formation and are one of the major inputs for facilitating technological change. This paper describes recent attempts to identify the factors which determine contractor involvement and use this information as a basis for analysing the part contractors will play in developing trchnologies such as coal conversion and biotechnology.

Notes: [Auszug] Three normal cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) and three cats were used. Three other monkeys were anaesthetized and one eye removed 8 or 10 days before they were re-anaesthetized and perfused with buffered 4% paraformal -dehyde. Alternating frozen sections from both sides of the brains were ...
