Description / Table of Contents: Deposition of hard coatings type (B,C,N) at low coating temperatures by PACVDIn this study the deposition of (B,C,N) layers by means of low temperature (250°C) pulsed DC plasma assisted CVD process was investigated using a metallo-organic compound as precursor being synthesized in a new way. It is shown that the deposition of (B,C,N) layers is possible with high hardness and adhesion in the investigated parameter range.

Notes: The aim of this article was to study the influence of different matrix molecules on the quality of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectra of oligosaccharides. An important criterion was the sample preparation, i.e. the crystallization process leading to the matrix from which the analytes were desorbed and investigated. Quality criteria were, among others, the resulting molecular peak intensity, the mass resolution, and the suppression of unwanted matrix peaks. It was found that a mixture of 2,5-dihydroxy benzoic acid (DHB) and 1-hydroxy isoquinoline (HIC) in a weight ratio of 3:1 was best suited for the analytical investigation of oligosaccharides. In addition, this matrix mixture was found to be quite tolerant against all kinds of buffers, salts, and even additives such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Furthermore, we determined the different affinities of the alkaline metals to the carbohydrates and found that cesium and potassium ions ionize oligosaccharides about three times better than sodium ions and therefore have an important influence on the quantum yield.

Notes: A Nafion membrane was tested as a new tool for a fast and easy sample pretreatment for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) measurements. This membrane material was used for ion exchange and carbohydrate purification with minimal quantities of sample solution. An ion exchange method for carbohydrates was developed and demonstrated on a Dextran sample. The cations of the original sample were replaced within minutes by potassium or cesium ions. Another feature of this membrane was the fact that proteins and peptides adsorb on the acid surface. This behavior was investigated as a purification step for carbohydrates with high peptide and protein impurity concentrations. It was found that oligosaccharide libraries from rat- and mouse IgG mass spectra can be obtained clearly in the presence of high peptide impurities.

Notes: Flow patterns in the channel of a screw extruder have been investigated in a study utilizing a model extruder with stationary screw and a rotating, transparent barrel. Photographs of flow streamlines at conditions over the full range of output restriction are presented for a non-Newtonian fluid. A technique employing photographs of particle tracers was used with the same apparatus to permit quantitative measurement of velocity profiles with both a Newtonian and a non-Newtonian fluid.

Notes: The fluorinated surface layer of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) membranes exposed to a dilute stream of fluorine gas has been characterized with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The concentration and profile of reacted fluorine as a function of exposure time is determined. A computer routine was employed to deconvolute the poorly resolved carbon spectra after various fluorine exposure times. The concentrations of mono-, di-, and trifluorocarbon groups thus determined were used to propose specific structures of PMP at the surface after 1 and 15 min of fluorination. The carbon spectra collected at electron takeoff angles of 15°, 30°, and 90° were also deconvoluted, giving insight into the placement of fluorine as a function of depth. Oxygen is incorporated into the polymer during the fluorination reaction, and the O1s spectra was deconvoluted to determine how the oxygen is bound.

Notes: The gas transport properties of several simple vinyl and vinylidene polymers are compared to examine the effect of pendant group type (H, CH3, F, Cl) and symmetry of placement. The literature contains extensive information about these polymers, which has been critically reviewed to obtain consistent data for interpretation of the effect of structure on gas permeability. The gas transport data available for many of these polymers are quite variable because of differences in additives, thermal history, and crystallinity. The values used here are from studies where the physical properties of the film were reported along with the transport data. The appropriate data were not available for poly(vinyl fluoride) or poly(vinylidene chloride). For poly(vinyl fluoride), permeability measurements and thermal analysis were done to supply this information. Results for poly(vinylidene chloride) were obtained by extrapolation of copolymer permeation properties. Estimates of the permeability of oxygen in the amorphous phase of each polymer are discussed in terms of the estimated fractional free volume of that phase. In this way, the intrinsic effects of molecular structure on gas permeation exclusive of crystallinity effects have been evaluated.

Notes: The 9 df thin plate element of Mohr and Mohr uses cubic interpolation to obtain values of w at the third points of the element sides, in turn interpolating from these and the vertex values within the element. Recently this element has been modified and successfully applied to ‘potential’ problems. Subsequently it was found that the interpolations of the element of Bazeley et al. (1965, 1968) gave identical results for potential problems. In the present paper it is shown that this is because the interpolations of the two elements are exactly equivalent. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The dependence of the dynamic characteristics of distillation column sections on the shape of the equilibrium relationship and the number of plates comprising the section is discussed. Dynamic characteristics, valid near the steady state operating condition, were obtained for simple column sections separating binary mixtures by a straightforward calculation with a digital computer. Sections with concave downward equilibria respond significantly more slowly than comparable sections with linear equilibria. Sections with concave upward equilibria respond faster. This behavior is explained in terms of the internal recycle within the section. The rate of propagation of a disturbance from end to end in the section is only weakly influenced by the shape of the equilibrium relationship.
