Notes: Abstract We describe a classification scheme for bursting oscillations which encompasses many of those found in the literature on bursting in excitable media. This is an extension of the scheme of Rinzel (inMathematical Topics in Population Biology, Springer, Berlin, 1987), put in the context of a sequence of horizontal cuts through a two-parameter bifurcation diagram. We use this to describe the phenomenological character of different types of bursting, addressing the issue of how well the bursting can be characterized given the limited amount of information often available in experimental settings.

Notes: Abstract Collapsible-tube flow with self-excited oscillations has been extensively investigated. Though physiologically relevant, forced oscillation coupled with self-excited oscillation has received little attention in this context. Based on an ODE model of collapsible-tube flow, the present study applies modern dynamics methods to investigate numerically the responses of forced oscillation to a limit-cycle oscillation which has topological characteristics discovered in previous unforced experiments. A devil's staircase and period-doubling cascades are presented with forcing frequency and amplitude as control parameters. In both cases, details are provided in a bifurcation diagram. Poincaré sections, a frequency spectrum and the largest Lyapunov exponents verify the existence of chaos in some circumstances. The thin fractal structure found in the strange attractors is believed to be a result of high damping and low stiffness in such systems.

Notes: Abstract Most of the elastic tubes found in the mammalian body will collapse from a distended circular cross section and when collapsed may undergo flow-induced oscillations. A mathematical model describing fluid flow in a collapsible tube is analysed using the software package AUTO-86. AUTO-86 is used for continuation and bifurcation problems in systems of non-linear ordinary differential equations. The model is a third-order lumped-parameter type and is based on the classical “Starling resistor”; it describes the unsteady flow behaviour and, in particular, the experimentally observed self-excited oscillations, in a way which is simple enough to give physical understanding, yet still firmly based on fluid mechanical principles. Some of the bifurcation types found in this model bear close resemblance to the types suggested by experimental observations of self-excited oscillations in collapsible tubes; they thus shed some light on the various topological changes which occur in practice, particularly in view of the fact that some of the points found numerically are diffcult to achieve experimentally, while the existence of others can only be inferred indirectly and uncertainly from experiment.

Notes: Abstract We generalize features of bounded symmetric domains to a bigger class of symmetric spaces calledMakarevič spaces: we associate a generalizedBergman operator to such a space and describe the invariant pseudo-metric and the invariant measure on the space by means of this family of operators. The space itself can be characterized essentially as the domain where the generalized Bergman operator is nondegenerate. These results are applied to the theory ofcompactly causal symmetric spaces: we describe explicitly the complex domain Ξ associated to such a space.

Notes: Abstract This report surveys the considerable progress made over the last five years—such as the marketing of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), cellular wireless filter systems, and high current leads—and assesses needs and opportunities in the areas of fundamental science, materials development, thin film and device applications, and wire and bulk applications. It examines the challenges facing high-temperature superconductivity: from the need to understand the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity and the unusual “normal” state to the need for new instrumentation for material characterization. Advances in thin film and bulk materials are reviewed, and obstacles impeding the commercialization of HTS materials are examined.

Notes: Abstract Vector-valued, asymptotically stationary stochastic processes on σ-compact locally compact abelian groups are studied. For such processes, we introduce a stationary spectral measure and show that it is discrete if and only if the asymptotically stationary covariance function is almost periodic. Using an “almost periodic Fourier transform” we recover the discrete part of the spectral measure and construct a natural, consistent estimator for the latter from samples of the process.

Notes: Abstract Current research on distributed knowledge processes suggests a critical conflict between knowledge processes in groups and the technologies built to support them. The conflict centers on observations that authentic and efficient knowledge creation and sharing is deeply embedded in an interpersonal face to face context, but that technologies to support distributed knowledge processes rely on the assumption that knowledge can be made mobile outside these specific contexts. This conflict is of growing national importance as work patterns change from same site to separate site collaboration, and millions of government and industrial dollars are invested in establishing academic-industry alliances and building infrastructures to support distributed collaboration and knowledge. In this paper we describe our multi-method approach for studying the tension between embedded and mobile knowledge in a project funded by the National Science Foundation's program on Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence. This project examines knowledge processes and technology in distributed, multidisciplinary scientific teams in the National Computational Science Alliance (Alliance), a prototypical next generation enterprise. First we review evidence for the tension between embedded and mobile knowledge in several research literatures. Then we present our three-factor conceptualization that considers how the interrelationships among characteristics of the knowledge shared, group context, and communications technology contribute to the tension between embedded and mobile knowledge. Based on this conceptualization we suggest that this dichotomy does not fully explain distributed multidisciplinary knowledge processes. Therefore we propose some alternate models of how knowledge is shared. We briefly introduce the setting in which we are studying distributed knowledge processes and finally, we describe the data collection methods and the current status of the project.

Notes: Abstract Approximations of the estimation variances of kernel estimators of the pair correlation function and the product density of a planar Poisson process are given. Furthermore, a heuristic approximation of the estimation variance of an estimator of the pair correlation function of a “general” planar point process is suggested. All formulae have been tested by simulation experiments.

Notes: Abstract Gürtleret al. (1981) argue that SiO could not be the material responsible for the interstellar 10 micron feature as had been proposed by Duleyet al. (1979). While Millar (1982) has quite successfully refuted the arguments of Gürtleret al. (1981), we present here some additional considerations which indicate that the model of Duleyet al. (1979) requires appreciable modification to be consistent with recent experimental results.

Notes: Abstract Several general features of nucleation characteristics of low density cosmic clouds are discussed. These are: (1) tendency for metastable condensates to form, (2) non-occurrence of nominal refractory molecule in the gas, (3) a strong temperature dependence of condensation at relatively low temperatures, and (4) significant vibrational disequilibrium in cosmic clouds. These support previous analyses by the author which indicate that equilibrium calculations have restricted applicability. A kinetic treatment of condensation is required for cosmic grains and the possibility of formulating such an analysis is pointed out.
