    Notes: The minimal region encoding the Corynebacterium glutamicum threonine synthase structural gene and its promoter was mapped by deletion analysis and complementation of the C. glutamicum thrC allele to a 1.6kb region of the recombinant plasmid pFS80. The nucleotide sequence of this and flanking DNA was determined. The transcription and translation start points were identified by S1 mapping analysis and amino-terminal protein sequencing, respectively. The thrC gene encodes a 54481-Dalton polypeptide product. Translation of the thrC mRNA initiates only six nucleotides downstream from transcription. The length of the mRNA transcript is consistent with a single gene transcription unit. The C. glutamicum thrC gene is expressed independently of the other threonine-specific genes hom and thrB.

    Notes: Abstract Wear behaviour of aluminium matrix composites is characterized by the dry spindle wear test under various conditions (volume fractions of reinforcements, sliding distances and speeds). Wear resistance of composites is improved due to the presence of reinforcements, but no noticeable improvements are observed in the wear resistance with more than 20% addition of reinforcements. To analyse wear mechanisms, wear surfaces are examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The major wear mechanisms of discontinuous metal matrix composites (MMC)s are strongly dependent on sliding speeds. Dominant mechanism is the adhesive-abrasive wear at low and intermediate sliding speeds, and melt wear at high sliding speeds. Weight loss is linearly increased with the sliding distance. The effect of reinforcements' orientations on wear behaviours is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract A method is presented for maximum strength optimum design of symmetric composite laminates subjected to in-plane and transverse loadings. The finite element method based on shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of composite laminates. Ply orientation angles are chosen as design variables. The quadratic failure criterion which is meant to predict fracture, is used as an object function for optimum stacking sequence design of a laminated plate. The Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno optimization technique is employed to solve the optimization problem effectively. Numerical results are given for various loading conditions, boundary conditions, and aspect ratios. The results show that the quadratic failure criterion such as Tsai-Hill theory is effective for the optimum structural design of composite laminates.

    Notes: Abstract Tests of cross-ply composite tubes were performed under combined axial and torsional loading up to failure. Strength properties and failure mechanisms were evaluated with reference to the biaxiality ratio of the loading. The scattering of the biaxial strength data was analyzed using the Weibull distribution. The axial contraction of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) tubes under biaxial loading was investigated theoretically and experimentally. Artificial neural networks were introduced to predict the failure strength using the algorithm of the error back-propagation. The prediction was also made by the Tsai-Wu theory using the experimental data and by the combined optimized tensor-polynomial theory. A comparison shows that the artificial neural network has the smallest root-mean square (RMS) error of the three prediction methods. The prediction of the axial contraction of the tubes correlates well with the results of a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) of the testing machine. From the phenomenological analysis of the failure and the fractographic observations of the fracture surface, three types of failure modes and microscopic failure were investigated, depending on the biaxiality ratio, and the corresponding failure mechanisms are suggested.

    Notes: Abstract The lacewing Chrysopa cognata, one of the principal predators of aphids in Korea, was tested for responses to the aphid sex pheromone components (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone and (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol and the aphid alarm pheromone (E)-β-farnesene. Electroantennogram responses were obtained to the sex pheromone components but not to (E)-β-farnesene. The sex pheromone components were attractive in a Y-tube olfactometer assay and in field trials with water traps, but no attraction was observed to (E)-β-farnesene.

    Notes: Abstract The characteristics of the preform play a role in determining the final properties of MMCs. Effects of organic binder and microwave drying on preform microstructure have been examined by SEM. In the preform with organic binder, flocking processes are observed during drying. The preform has a uniform distribution of binder and dries quickly with microwave drying owing to its internal and volumetric heating patterns. The fundamental manufacturing process and controlling parameters of squeeze casting, including preform temperature, mould temperature, applied pressure and molten metal temperature, have been studied in Al/Al2O3 composites. MMCs have poor mechanical properties with too high temperatures of preform and molten metal due to thermal shocking of the preform, oxidation of the matrix and thermal damage to the fibers. Mould temperature barely affects the tensile strength of MMCs. High applied pressure reduces voids and solidifies the matrix faster. Conditions for squeeze casting to achieve optimal processing, are suggested. The tensile strength of MMCs can be improved by up to about 20% compared with the unreinforced matrix alloy.
