    Beschreibung: During the 2007-2008 antarctic campaign, the Italian PNRA installed a Low Power Magnetometer within the framework of the AIMNet (Antarctic International Magnetometer Network) project, proposed and coordinated by BAS. The magnetometer is situated at Talos Dome, around 300 km geographically North-West from Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS), and approximately at the same geomagnetic latitude as MZS. In this work we present a preliminary analysis of the geomagnetic field 1-min data, and a comparison with simultaneous data from different Antarctic stations.

    Beschreibung: After some short test surveys, during the 2004–2005 summer expedition in Antarctica, a geomagnetic French-Italian observatory was installed on the plateau (geographic coordinates: 75.1 S, 123.4 E; corrected geomagnetic coordinates: 88.9 S, 54.3 E; UT=LT−8) very close to the geomagnetic pole. In this paper we present some peculiarities of the daily variation as observed at this polar cap observatory during the years 2005 and 2006, taking into account the different Loyd seasons and different interplanetary magnetic field conditions. Some interesting results emerge from the analysis, confirming the dependence of the daily variation (and of the associated polar current systems) on the IMF Bz and By components. In particular the analysis showed that different Bz conditions correspond to different contribution to daily variation of ionospheric and field aligned currents, while particular By conditions lead to a time shift of the diurnal variation, indicating an asymmetry with respect to the noon meridian.

    Beschreibung: A Global Positioning System (GPS) network of 30 semi-permanent vertices known as the Victoria Land Network for Deformation Control (VLNDEF) was set up in the Austral summer of 1998 in Northern Victoria Land (NVL), including the permanent GPS station of Terra Nova Bay (TNB1), Antarctica. The locations were selected according to the known Cenozoic fault framework, which is characterized by a system of NW[U+2010]SE regional faults with right[U+2010]lateral, strike[U+2010]slip kinematics. The TNB1 permanent GPS station is included within the VLNDEF, and was installed on a bedrock monument in October 1998, it has been recording almost continuously up to the present. The GPS network has been surveyed routinely every two summers, using high[U+2010]quality, dual[U+2010]frequency GPS receivers like Trimble 5700, TopCon GB100, and Ashtech Z-XII. In this study we present the results of a distributed session approach based on Gamit/Globk 10.4 software package applied to the processing of the GPS data of the VLNDEF aimed to obtain the preliminary framework of the active tectonics of this region of Antarctica. An improved reference frame definition was implemented, including a new Euler rotation pole, to compute the Antarctic intra-plate residual velocities. The projection of the residual velocities on the main faults in NVL show present[U+2010]day activities for some faults, including the Tucker, Leap Year, Lanterman, Aviator, and David faults, with right[U+2010]lateral strike[U+2010]slip kinematics and local extensional and compressional components. This active fault pattern divides NVL into eight rigid blocks, each characterized by its relative movements and rigid rotations. These show velocities of up to several millimeters per year, which are comparable to those predicted by plate tectonic theory at active plate margins. During the austral summer 2010, in the framework of the Italian Antarctic campaign, field investigations at 25 geodetic stations were performed both for survey of the instruments and measurements as well as for the geological study necessary to evaluate the geological stability of the sites. Preliminary analysis of the collected structural data showed the stability of most of the investigated stations, thus confirming the proposed active tectonic framework of the NVL at the regional scale.

    Beschreibung: The vertical dispersion of a tracer released on a density surface near 1500-m depth in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current west of Drake Passage indicates that the diapycnal diffusivity, averaged over 1 yr and over tens of thousands of square kilometers, is (1.3 ± 0.2) × 10−5 m2 s−1. Diapycnal diffusivity estimated from turbulent kinetic energy dissipation measurements about the area occupied by the tracer in austral summer 2010 was somewhat less, but still within a factor of 2, at (0.75 ± 0.07) × 10−5 m2 s−1. Turbulent diapycnal mixing of this intensity is characteristic of the midlatitude ocean interior, where the energy for mixing is believed to derive from internal wave breaking. Indeed, despite the frequent and intense atmospheric forcing experienced by the Southern Ocean, the amplitude of finescale velocity shear sampled about the tracer was similar to background amplitudes in the midlatitude ocean, with levels elevated to only 20%–50% above the Garrett–Munk reference spectrum. These results add to a long line of evidence that diapycnal mixing in the interior middepth ocean is weak and is likely too small to dictate the middepth meridional overturning circulation of the ocean.
