Notes: Neutron scattering measurements have been performed on a single-crystal sample of CsCo0.83Mg0.17Br3, a quasi-one-dimensional, Ising-like antiferromagnet. Residual three- dimensional interactions between the dilute magnetic chains precipitate a phase transition to long-range order at TN∼9.0 K, and short-range correlations persist as high as 40 K. Relatively high-energy inelastic scattering from both "bulk'' spin-wave modes and "end'' modes is observed from the finite chains. The low-energy inelastic spectrum is dominated by soliton scattering due to antiphase domain walls propagating along the finite chains.

Notes: The temperature dependence of photoluminescence from the Mg-doped In0.5Ga0.5P layers on (100) GaAs substrates grown by liquid-phase epitaxy has been studied. At low temperature, the spectra show only two major emission peaks involving intrinsic recombination and conduction–band-to-acceptor transition. The intrinsic recombination dominates in the doping concentration range studied (1.0×1017–7.0×1018 cm−3) above 60 K. Below 50 K, these two peaks merged with each other when the doping concentration is higher than 1×1018 cm−3. The temperature dependence of band gap in In0.5Ga0.5P layers determined from the photoluminescence peak energy varies as 1.976 − [7.5 ×10−4 T2/(T + 500)] eV. For the moderately doped concentration (p 〈 1.4 × 1018 cm−3), the Mg acceptor ionization energy obtained from 50-K photoluminescent spectra is in the range from 37 to 40 meV.

Notes: The a- and c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O7−y thin films were prepared by rf magnetron sputtering technique. The characterization of the thin films was carried out by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and scanning Auger profile techniques. The Tc, Tc(H), Jc(H), and Hc2 -T(near Tc) were measured by the standard dc four-probe method. It was found that very strong anisotropy of this material was manifested in its superconducting properties, especially for c-axis-oriented thin films. It was also found that Jc depends very strongly upon stoichiometric composition 123, preferential orientation of the film, and the characteristic of the film-substrate interface.

Notes: Ce(Fe1−xAlx)2, with x=0, 0.06, and 0.14, has been studied by small-angle neutron scattering in order to investigate the instability of the ferromagnetic state in the pure material to small amounts of magnetic disorder. The pure material (x=0) displays a ferromagnetic transition near TC=225 K, and more complicated behavior below ∼100 K. The disordered alloys, x=0.06 and x=0.14, display ferromagnetic-like states over relatively narrow temperature ranges, and an additional low-temperature phase. The ferromagnetic-like state in the x=0.14 alloy appears to be qualitatively different from that exhibited by the other two. High-wave-vector-resolution measurements on the x=0.06 sample indicate that its low-temperature ordered phase is ferrimagnetic in origin.

Notes: Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and photofragmentation data for (KI)−n, K(KI)−n , and K2(KI)−n (n up to 13) are presented. The excess electrons in these clusters are all loosely bound with vertical detachment energies below 1.6 eV, and the photofragmentation data correlated well with the UPS results. Our results for the stoichiometric clusters are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, and the ground state geometry of these clusters are discussed. For the excess potassium cluster series, we suggest the possible existence of electron spin pairs in some of these cluster anions.

Notes: The radiative lifetimes and reactivity of metastable NO+(a 3Σ+) and O+2(a 4Πu) have been investigated using a triple cell ion cyclotron resonance (ICR) spectrometer. Radiative lifetimes of (100±20) ms and (135±25) ms have been found for NO+(a 3Σ+) v≥1 and v≥0 respectively, with Ar and CO2 as monitor gases. The overall reaction rate of NO+(a 3Σ+,v≥1) with Ar (6.5×10−10 cm3 s−1 ) is 1 order of magnitude larger than the rate of v=0 determined in flowing afterglows. CO2 reacts at collision rate. For O+2 the overall lifetime of v≥0, determined with Ar as monitor, is (30±6) ms in between the two values (7 and 130 ms) found by Bustamente et al. using the photodissociation technique. The possible reasons for the longer lifetimes determined in previous ICR experiments is discussed. In the absence of any ab initio calculation, the experimental results on NO+(a 3Σ+) may only be compared to values calculated using an approximated perturbation model. Unfortunately, the reliability of this model, also used in the previous studies, is very limited because of the large uncertainty on the coupling between the metastable a 3Σ+ and the perturbing radiative A 1Π states.

Notes: Theory and application are described of a new rotor-synchronized 3D-NMR (three-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance) experiment, that correlates molecular structure, order, and dynamics in partially oriented solids. General expressions for the sideband intensities in three frequency dimensions are developed for uniaxially ordered samples undergoing ultraslow molecular motions. For an isotropic powder the exchange pattern is confined to a single plane perpendicular to one of the frequency axes. For a partially ordered solid without exchange the sideband pattern is confined to a cross-diagonal plane. Sidebands in the full 3D cube result only if the residue giving rise to the signal is involved in both, molecular order and dynamics. The experiment, therefore, correlates these two properties and relates them to the chemical structure. Moreover, it offers a means to exploit the superior information about the geometry of the molecular motions provided by partially ordered samples under high resolution magic angle spinning (MAS) conditions. The technique is illustrated by 3D MAS spectra of highly oriented poly(oxymethylene), where strong positive and negative sidebands in the full 3D cube result from the helical jump motion.

Notes: The density profiles were measured in the Hefei tokamak-7 (HT-7) [World Survey of Activities in Controlled Fusion Research, Nuclear Fusion Special Supplement (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1997), p. 61] ohmic discharges by means of a new multichannel far-infrared (FIR) laser interferometer. The progress on the extension of the HT-7 ohmic discharge operation region was introduced. The experiment results at the density limit, the multifaceted asymmetric radiation from the edge (MARFE) phenomena, the rf (radio frequency) boronization experiments, and the fueling efficiency studies were reported. The plasma physics in the molecular beam injection (MBI), the pellet injection (PI), and the gas puffing (GP) fueling experiments was studied and discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first x-ray diffraction experimental station at Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory has been available for synchrotron radiation users in research. The station is located on the back-end of 4B9A, a beamline from a bending magnet. When the storage ring of BEPC operates in a dedicated mode (2.2 GeV), 4B9A provides a focused monochromatic x ray in between 4 and 12 keV. A four-circle diffractometer with a crystal analyzer is installed. Experimental processes such as apparatus alignment, monitoring of incident radiation, acquisition of diffracted intensities, and running of the monochromator, are controlled with a computer through CAMAC modules. In this article, instrumentation and performances of the station are outlined.

Notes: We present the results of a systematic study on how the processing conditions of spin casting affect the morphology of polymer thin films, and how the morphology affects polymer light-emitting diode (LED) performance. The absorption peaks of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1, 4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) thin films, which reflects the conjugation of π electrons, are strongly correlated to the spin-casting conditions. At high spin speed, better conjugation is observed. In addition, the photoluminescence emission peak of MEH-PPV films at ∼630 nm has a strong correlation to polymer aggregation. By proper selection of organic solvents, polymer solution concentrations, and spin speeds, we are able to control the aggregation of the polymer chains. Subsequently, we are able to control the emission color and the quantum efficiency of the MEH-PPV LEDs by simply adjusting the spin-casting conditions. Although spin casting is the most commonly used technique for the preparation of polymer thin films, our finding suggests that the thin-film preparation, and thus the formation of polymer morphology, is a much more complicated process than previously assumed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
