Notes: We have done a systematic study of the ac susceptibility, dc magnetization, and ferromagnetic resonance in a set of polycrystalline samples of La1−xSrxMnO3 with nominal x values varying from 0.46 to 0.53 at 0.01 intervals. Apart from noting the remarkable changes attendant on small variations in x, it is found that at low T, one has coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The resonance data are interpreted to provide a measure for the size of the ferromagnetic regions. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We reexamine the recently discovered giant microwave magnetoimpedance in manganite powders. The absorption consists of two components, a resistive part which is only weakly field dependent, and a low-temperature spin-dependent part, which gives rise to the giant effects. We propose that the half-point field H0, required to reduce the spin-dependent absorption to one half of its value at zero field, arises from the magnetic anisotropy consequent on the strains in the grains. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An observation of the Al-AlOx-Au light emitting tunneling junctions deposited on the underlayers of CaF2 has been made. The applied bias can be up to 5.12 V at room temperature, and the efficiencies were in the 10−4 range and one order higher than before. The emission spectra are characterized by the cutoff frequency near 3.26 eV and the lack of the emission from the radiative mode of surface plasmon polariton.

Notes: A trapezoidal potential barrier was used to model an Al2O3 barrier layer in three different tunnel junctions: Al-Al2O3-Au, -Ag and -Cu. The trapezoidal tunneling barrier parameters were determined by fitting the calculated I-V curves to the experimental curves at 77 K. It is found that the barrier width of the Au- , Ag- , and Cu-junction is 24, 25, and 12 A(ring), respectively, and that the barrier heights of the three different junctions are close to each other at the Al-Al2O3 interface, but they are 1.05, 0.85, and 3.10 eV at the Al2O3-Au, -Ag, and -Cu interface, respectively. The Auger depth profiles of the junctions suggest that the variation of the barrier parameters with the top electrode may be due to diffusion of the top electrode atoms into the barrier and the occurrence of the oxidation reaction between the Al2O3 and the top metal electrode atoms in the region of the interfaces.

Notes: In quite a few cases, the geometric distortion of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) image is essentially caused by the nonorthogonal scanning. A physical and mathematical model is proposed to correct such distortion, giving a satisfactory result.

Notes: We report an observation of light emission from a new dc-operated device consisting of a 100–200-A(ring)-thick MgF2 film sandwiched between two metal films. The device can be biased to above 10 V, and the observed emission spectrum ranges from 3600 to 9000 A(ring). The analysis of the emission spectrum suggests that the light emission can be ascribed to processes wherein the hot electrons produced by the high electric field excite the surface plasmons and the interband transitions.
