    Description: Current descriptions of the ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm use two superficially different languages: an older language of the renormalization group and renormalized operators, and a more recent language of matrix product states and matrix product operators. The same algorithm can appear dramatically different when written in the two different vocabularies. In this work, we carefully describe the translation between the two languages in several contexts. First, we describe how to efficiently implement the ab initio DMRG sweep using a matrix product operator based code, and the equivalence to the original renormalized operator implementation. Next we describe how to implement the general matrix product operator/matrix product state algebra within a pure renormalized operator-based DMRG code. Finally, we discuss two improvements of the ab initio DMRG sweep algorithm motivated by matrix product operator language: Hamiltonian compression, and a sum over operators representation that allows for perfect computational parallelism. The connections and correspondences described here serve to link the future developments with the past and are important in the efficient implementation of continuing advances in ab initio DMRG and related algorithms.

    Description: Heterostructure devices with specific and extraordinary properties can be fabricated by stacking two-dimensional crystals. Cleanliness at the inter-crystal interfaces within a heterostructure is crucial for maximizing device performance. However, because these interfaces are buried, characterizing their impact on device function is challenging. Here, we show that electron-beam induced current (EBIC) mapping can be used to image interfacial contamination and to characterize the quality of buried heterostructure interfaces with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. We applied EBIC and photocurrent imaging to map photo-sensitive graphene-MoS 2 heterostructures. The EBIC maps, together with concurrently acquired scanning transmission electron microscopy images, reveal how a device's photocurrent collection efficiency is adversely affected by nanoscale debris invisible to optical-resolution photocurrent mapping.

    Description: This paper describes experiments carried out on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [R. J. Hawryluk et al ., Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion 33, 1509 (1991)] to investigate the dependence of β-limiting disruption characteristics on toroidal field strength. The hard disruptions found at the β-limit in high field plasmas were not found at low field, even for β's 50% higher than the empirical β-limit of β n  ≈ 2 at high field. Comparisons of experimentally measured β's to TRANSP simulations suggest anomalous loss of up to half of the beam fast ions in the highest β, low field shots. The anomalous transport responsible for the fast ion losses may at the same time broaden the pressure profile. Toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes, fishbone instabilities, and Geodesic Acoustic Modes are investigated as possible causes of the enhanced losses. Here, we present the first observations of high frequency fishbones [F. Zonca et al ., Nucl. Fusion 49 , 085009 (2009)] on TFTR. The interpretation of Axi-symmetric Beam-driven Modes as Geodesic Acoustic Modes and their possible correlation with transport barrier formation are also presented.

    Notes: A study of interface reactions between the magnetic layer and the protective carbon coating, and the influence of these interactions on magnetic properties of rigid disk media for magnetic data storage is presented. Quaternary CoPtCrB and CoPtCrTa alloy films and protective hydrogenated or nitrogenated carbon coatings were deposited by dc magnetron sputtering onto metal hard disks (AlMg substrate/electroplated NiP layer/Cr underlayer). Core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of nitrogenated carbon films on B-containing alloys showed the formation of boron nitride and small amounts of chromium nitride at the interface, and also indicated the likely presence of chromium carbide. The amount of boron nitride at the interface varied depending on substrate bias voltage and temperature during deposition of the carbon coating. From a quantitative analysis of the x-ray photoelectron spectra it was inferred that boron nitride formation was controlled by the diffusion of boron from deeper regions of the magnetic layer to the interface. Surprisingly, compared to disks using the same magnetic alloy but with a hydrogenated or pure carbon coating, no effects of these interface reactions on the magnetic properties of the disks could be detected. In contrast, for a Ta-containing alloy the same comparison revealed a drop in the coercivity of up to 200 Oe in disks with nitrogenated carbon overcoats. Strong evidence for the formation of tantalum nitride as well as small amounts of chromium nitride was found in the photoelectron spectra. Thus, while the formation of boron nitride at the interface of CoPtCrB media and protective carbon coating does not affect the magnetic properties of the disks in the range of boron and nitrogen concentrations investigated here, small changes in the chemical environment of Ta and/or Cr can lead to significant changes in the magnetic properties of the CoPtCrTa media. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effects of alpha particles on the internal kink and fishbone modes are studied analytically. The nonadiabatic contribution from untrapped alpha particles is negligible. Finite inverse aspect ratio, plasma β, and plasma shaping effects can significantly enhance the trapped particle drift reversal domain in the pitch angle space and reduce the bounce-averaged magnetic drift frequency. The decrease of the drift magnitude and drift reversal effects on the ideal kink mode is small, but the βα threshold for the fishbone mode can be much lower than previously predicted [B. Coppi, S. Migliuolo, F. Pegoraro, and F. Porcelli, Phys. Fluids B 2, 927 (1990)]. Moreover, the fishbone mode could be excited by alpha particles, even when the plasma is stable in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) limit. In addition, the ion diamagnetic drift frequency (finite ion Larmor radius effect) has a strong destabilizing effect on the fishbone mode when it is comparable with the trapped alpha-averaged precessional drift frequency, even though it stabilizes the plasma in the ideal MHD limit.

    Notes: Anomalous transport is investigated near threshold in the standard map. Very long time flights, and a large anomaly in the transport, are shown to be associated with a new form of multi-island structures causing orbit sticking. The phase space structure of these traps, and the exponents of the characteristic long time tails associated with them are determined. In general these structures are very complex, but some cases, consisting of layers of islands, allow simple modeling. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A fully three-dimensional gyrokinetic particle code using magnetic coordinates for general geometry has been developed and applied to the investigation of zonal flows dynamics in toroidal ion-temperature-gradient turbulence. Full torus simulation results support the important conclusion that turbulence-driven zonal flows significantly reduce the turbulent transport. Linear collisionless simulations for damping of an initial poloidal flow perturbation exhibit an asymptotic residual flow. The collisional damping of this residual causes the dependence of ion thermal transport on the ion–ion collision frequency, even in regimes where the instabilities are collisionless. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A case for substantial loss of fast ions degrading the performance of tokamak fusion test reactor plasmas [Phys. Plasmas 2, 2176 (1995)] with reversed magnetic shear (RS) is presented. The principal evidence is obtained from an experiment with short (40–70 ms) tritium beam pulses injected into deuterium beam heated RS plasmas [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 924 (1999)]. Modeling of this experiment indicates that up to 40% beam power is lost on a time scale much shorter than the beam–ion slowing down time. Critical parameters which connect modeling and experiment are: The total 14 MeV neutron emission, its radial profile, and the transverse stored energy. The fusion performance of some plasmas with internal transport barriers is further deteriorated by impurity accumulation in the plasma core. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neoclassical simulations of alpha particle density profiles in high fusion power plasmas on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Phys. Plasmas 5, 1577 (1998)] are found to be in good agreement with measurements of the alpha distribution function made with a sensitive active neutral particle diagnostic. The calculations are carried out in Hamiltonian magnetic coordinates with a fast, particle-following Monte Carlo code which includes the neoclassical transport processes, a recent first-principles model for stochastic ripple loss and collisional effects. New calculations show that monotonic shear alpha particles are virtually unaffected by toroidal field ripple. The calculations show that in reversed shear the confinement domain is not empty for trapped alphas at birth and allow an estimate of the actual alpha particle densities measured with the pellet charge exchange diagnostic. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Experiments with plasma heating by waves at the ion cyclotron resonance of a minority species have shown that the heating efficiency degrades above a certain power threshold. It is found that this threshold is due to the destabilization of a branch of shear Alfvén waves, the Energetic Particle Modes, which causes a diffusive loss of fast ions. These modes not only play a fundamental role in the transport of the fast ions, but appear closely related to the formation of giant sawteeth. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
