    Notes: Experimental data on the 248 and 308 nm wavelength excimer laser ablation at poly(tetrafluoroethylene) doped with polymide (PI) are reported for a range of fluences and dopant concentrations. Threshold fluences were determined and a correlation was obtained between the dopant concentration and the threshold fluence. The threshold fluences and the limiting etch rates at high fluences decreased with increasing dopant concentration, and there is a minimum dopant concentration below which there is no ablation at both of the wavelengths. The side wall taper of the ablated holes increased with increasing dopant concentration. At subthreshold fluences, the polymer surface was modified with selective removal of PI from the polymer blend. The etch rates have been modeled using a two parameter thermal model to describe the etching process. The parameters obtained by fitting the data are qualitatively correlated to the dopant concentration and the measured limiting etch rates.

    Notes: Ion transport through curved-solenoid macroparticle filters is investigated using a parabolic potential model of the electric field. Consideration of the ion equations of motion shows that the filter efficiency will increase with the relative radius of curvature of the solenoid and decrease with the relative length of the input region. If the magnetic field is constant in the input region, transport efficiencies of up to 100% are predicted. We argue that the observed effect of axial magnetic field on the angular distribution of ions emitted from the cathode spot can be explained by electric fields changing ion trajectories after emission, rather than a change in spot behavior. Detailed calculations give the energy and angular distributions with which the ions exit the filter. Focusing effects are observed and seen to affect the ion transport−particularly when the ions are not emitted on the filter axis.

    Notes: The plasma characteristics of a new arc mode on carbon referred to as the "stationary cathodic arc'' are reported. Particularly, optical emission spectroscopy, probe and ion energy distribution measurements are used to compare the properties of the stationary arc with the normal "random cathodic arc'' on carbon. The measurements revealed that the plasma properties of both arc modes are similar. In addition, we have correlated the plasma characteristics to the film properties. Carbon films deposited using the stationary arc were found to have a surface particle density equivalent to those deposited using the filtered cathodic vacuum arc. The macro-particle free films were found to be highly tetrahedral and compressively stressed. Both the sp3 fraction and stress values were strongly dependent on the ion energy with maximum values of 85% and 9.4 GPa, respectively, occurring at ≈50 eV. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Single-photon excimer laser ablation of neat poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) is not observed at emissions in the "quartz'' UV, i.e., from about 190–380 nm. However, it has been successfully demonstrated that, when the fluoropolymer is doped with small quantities of polyimide (PI), ablation in the quartz UV, e.g., at 248 and 308 nm and pulse widths of about 25 ns, is readily achieved. When PI-PTFE blends are exposed to subthreshold fluences, considerable changes in surface topography occur although clearly defined structures, e.g., pits, are not formed. Using photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy to evaluate surface and bulk chemical changes to blends exposed to subthreshold excimer laser fluences, 〈100 mJ/cm2, it is shown that PI (1) is distributed throughout the bulk and resides at the surface and (2) is selectively absorbing the high-energy photons and as a result being preferentially removed from the surface.

    Notes: The coherence properties of a diode-pumped Nd:YAG ring laser have been studied by a self-heterodyne autocorrelation technique using a very long path difference Mach–Zehnder interferometer and by homodyne interferometry in a Michelson interferometer. Results show the laser to have a linewidth of Δf=6.1±0.7 kHz at a power output of 5 mW.

    Notes: Application of near-field optical second harmonic microscopy to nanometer scale crystal and strain analysis of thin polycrystalline ferroelectric films is described. The near-field signal is shown to be sensitive to local crystal orientation by experimental and theoretical studies of polarization properties of second harmonic generation from a poled single crystal of BaTiO3. Spatial resolution of the order of 80 nm has been demonstrated by recovery of the local poling direction of individual ferroelectric domains in polycrystalline thin Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 films. Near-field strain induced second harmonic generation from thin BaxSr1−xTiO3 films has also been studied, and an agreement between theory and experiment has been established. Thus, the technique described provides a tool for nanometer scale crystal and strain analysis of polycrystalline samples. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The β spectrum of Tl obtained using a 200-μm detector is distorted with a prominent peak centered around 97 keV. The features of this spectrum can be reproduced by a Monte Carlo procedure. The minimum ionizing nature of the electrons with energy higher than about 300 keV is responsible for the prominent peak. This combined with the energy deposited by the lower-energy electrons leads to the observed experimental spectrum.

    Notes: A simple experimental method to determine the depletion width of a surface barrier detector is discussed. An electron spectrum of Bi207 taken with a detector having depletion width less than the range of the electrons shows an additional peak. The position of the extra peak enables us to determine the depletion width.

    Notes: Optical feedback from velocity-selective nonlinear Faraday rotation in alkali metal vapors has been shown to be an effective technique for simultaneously stabilizing the frequency and reducing the linewidth of AlxGa1−xAs/GaAs lasers. The ultimate frequency stability of such a laser is limited by the quality factor Q=ν0/Δν of this frequency reference. In this letter we report the measurement of Q=6×106 for optical feedback from velocity-selective nonlinear Faraday rotation in Rb vapor.

    Notes: A photoconductive effect is observed in tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) or amorphous diamond films with a high proportion of sp3 bonding and a structure analogous to amorphous silicon. The spectral response is shown to peak at around 750–800 nm and extend into the near UV region. The maximum photoresponse coincides with the optical absorption edge. The quantum efficiency of 300 nm thick films with interdigitated electrodes is over 10% in the wavelength range 450–800 nm.
