Notes: Nonthermodynamical garnet Bi3Fe5O12 was synthesized by direct epitaxial growth via vapor phase using a reactive ion beam sputtering technique. The lattice constant was 12.631 A(ring). The saturation magnetization of the film grown onto a substrate (a=12.495 A(ring)) was 1500 G at room temperature. The uniaxial anisotropy energy was +7.2×104 erg/cm3. The conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy measurement indicates that the internal fields of 24d and 16a sites in the nearly lattice-matched film were 420 and 490 kOe, respectively. The internal field of the 24d site was larger by 30 kOe than that in YIG. The angle between the direction of the internal field and the film normal was 34.8°.

Notes: Polycrystalline films of nonthermodynamical garnet Bi3Fe5O12 were synthesized by direct epitaxial growth from the vapor phase. Polycrystalline thin layers of various kinds of thermodynamical garnets prepared on fused quartz substrates were employed as the substrate materials. The saturation magnetization of the film grown onto the polycrystalline GGG layer was 140 mT at 5 K. The films showed quite large magneto-optical effects. In the film on the GGG layer, the Faraday rotation angle at a wavelength of 633 nm was −5.5 deg/μm and the magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle at 455 nm was −0.9°.

Notes: We have investigated the effect on the optical and magnetic properties of adding W or Co to Bi-substituted garnet films sputtered on glass substrates. Adding a small amount (〈1.2 at. %) of W makes the film optically homogeneous. It also increases coercivity more than three times, probably due to wall pinning by W atoms. Adding Co reduces coercivity. On the thin film with added W, we have successfully performed a dynamic thermomagnetic writing with a regular bit shape. This promotes development of magneto-optical memory using garnet sputtered film.

Notes: A method for measuring spatially resolved high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for a spatially heterogeneous complex object has been examined by making images of several phantoms. The factors which determine the image quality are discussed from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints. Especially, the effects of field inhomogeneity, originating from magnet inhomogeneity and nonuniform magnetic susceptibility of the object itself, are examined in detail. The indirect spin-spin coupling effect on imaging results is theoretically discussed. Although mathematical treatments are given for three-dimensional objects, actual measurements were performed for spatially limited two-dimensional regions by slicing the three-dimensional objects using a selective excitation technique. The results show that the present method is feasible for practical chemical shift imaging purposes.

Notes: Abstract The excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling process in single twitch fibres from frog toe muscle was inhibited selectively by phenylglyoxal (PGO), a specific guanidyl modifying reagent. A new protein (31.5 kDa), which has PGO-binding ability and seems to play a key role in the E-C coupling process, was solubilized from transverse tubule membrane-junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum complexes (TTM-JSR) of frog skeletal muscles, using14C-PGO. The monoclonal antibody against this protein applied extracellularly inhibited the E-C coupling process of the single fibres. This protein appears to constitute the very first step of input for E-C coupling. It is considered to behave as an indispensable part of an ‘electrometer’ to measure membrane potentials. Therefore, the name ‘electrometrin’ is suggested for the new protein.

Notes: Summary A new glycoprotein of 31,500 dalton, which has a high affinity for ouabain, and is independent of (Na+−K+)-ATPase, was solubilized from transverse tubule membrane and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum complexes (TTM-JSR) of cat cardiac muscle. This protein could be extracted only in small amounts from sarcolemmaplasma membrane (SLM-PL) fragments, suggesting that it indeed originates from the TTM-JSR.

Notes: Abstract A rapid method has been developed for the de termination of214Pb and214Bi in natural waters by alpha-spectrometric measurement of214Po. Well water was filtered on a membrane filter impregnated with manganese oxide and followed by direct alpha-spectrometric analysis. A prominent alpha peak was assigned to214Po, which should be supported by the longer lived parents214Pb and214Bi. The activity ratios between214Pb and214Bi adsorbed on the filter were determined by using the change of activity of214Po as a function of counting period after the filtration. The adsorbed yield of214Pb was also determined from the growth of the alpha-peak due to210Po from a210Pb tracer added in the original water. The results indicated that the amount of214Pb was in radioactive non-equilibrium state with the Rn-222 dissolved, while the activity ratios of214Bi/214Pb showed on increasing tendency with the storage period of the water.

Notes: Abstract A new adhesion process of glass to metal was developed based on the redox reaction without oxidation of the metal surface. PbO-based glasses were strongly adhered to nickel metal at low temperature (400–500 °C) in a low-oxygen atmosphere (〈 0.1 p.p.m.). The interfaces between glasses and metal were analysed by SEM-EDS. It was found that the reaction layer and lead metal were formed by the redox reaction at the interface. In the case of the adhesion of PbO-based glasses containing CuO to nickel, the main reduced product in the glass was Cu2O, and lead was not detected. The redox reaction was simulated by a thermodynamic equilibrium theory; the results agreed with the analysis by SEM-EDS.

Notes: Abstract Using a pulsed muon beam, we have investigated the microscopic μ+ behavior in solid H2 and D2 down to 0.6 K by the μ+SR method. From the studies of μ+ spin relaxation phenomena in solid para‐ H2 and ortho‐ D2, we have found that μ+ forms three distinct microscopic states; H2μ+( D2μ+)(20\sim25\%), muonium (15\sim20\%) and μ+(\sim60\%). In H2μ+, the μ+ spin is depolarized in solid para‐ H2 and a local magnetic field Bloc=1\sim2 G is deduced from LF‐μ+SR measurements. The magnitude of Bloc is inconsistent with the magnetic dipolar field (\sim25 G) expected from the magnetic moments of two protons in the H2μ+ molecule and suggests that the H2μ+ molecule might be in the rotationally excited state. From LF‐μ+SR measurements, muonium and μ+ have been found to diffuse in solid o‐ D_2. The diffusion rate of muonium is two order of magnitude larger than that of μ+.

Notes: Abstract The cause of the low detection efficiencies of Cherenkov radiation by the liquid scintillation counter was investigated. The detection limit of the liquid scintillation counter was assumed and the increase of counting rates for the increase of refractive index was calculated from Cherenkov photo yields and β-distribution.
