Notes: The irreversible isothermal annealing of the as-deposited defects of hydrogenated amorphous silicon, a-Si:H, deposited at room temperature by concentric-electrode radio-frequency glow discharge is studied using dark and photoconductivity, space-charge limited current, and time-of-flight. The photoconductivity increases as a power law of the annealing time with exponent 0.8. The density of states at the Fermi level, measured by space-charge limited current, is inversely proportional to the annealing time. These results are compatible with bimolecular annealing kinetics. The dark conductivity obeys a Meyer–Nelder rule during the isothermal anneal.

Notes: Co-Re metallic superlattices were prepared that show antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and enhanced saturation magnetoresistance for particular values of the Re spacer thickness. We report studies on films with the structure glass /150 A(ring) Re/[13 A(ring)Co/tRe]16/50 A(ring) Re, with tRe ranging from 3 to 40 A(ring). These structures were grown by magnetron sputtering in a system with a base pressure of 1×10−7 Torr with deposition rates of 0.3 and 0.4 A(ring)/s for Co and Re, respectively. x-ray diffractograms indicate the structure to be highly textured with the c axis perpendicular to the sample plane. The superlattice structure was obtained from high-angle θ-2θ scans. First-, second-, and third-order satellites are observed on both sides of the central [002] peak. Periodicity and bilayer composition are obtained from comparison of the data with a theoretical calculation of the x-ray diffractogram. Thickness calibration was confirmed by Rutherford backscattering and profilometer data. In-plane magnetization and magnetoresistance data (Δρ/ρ) indicate that stronger antiferromagnetic coupling and highest Δρ/ρ occur for tRe≈6 A(ring). The saturation field (Hs) needed to align contiguous antiferromagnetically coupled Co layers is about 1 T. This corresponds to an exchange coupling between the Co layer J≈−1 erg/cm2. (Δρ/ρ) reaches 2% in samples deposited at 170 °C. This data confirms results obtained by Parkin et al.1 in Co-Ru and Co-Cr superlattices.

Notes: The thermal stability of TbCo exchange biased spin valve sensors has been extended to 230 °C, by using a Co pinned layer rather than NiFe. Magnetoresistance (MR) remains essentially stable up to annealing temperatures TA of 230 °C and degrades to 1% at TA=240 °C. Providing TA does not exceed 230 °C, any loss in the MR signal can be fully recovered by applying a field perpendicular to the film plane. This improved thermal stability allows processing at higher temperatures. The unidirectional exchange in the TbCo/Co interface becomes uniaxial for TA〉100 °C. Even though the unidirectional character was not recovered by any field/anneal treatment, uniaxial anisotropy above 120 Oe is maintained for TA=260 °C. Devices were fabricated using a process with a maximum temperature of 180 °C. No MR loss is found during process in test structures at wafer level. A prototype 10-μm-track width spin valve tape head for QIC applications gave a maximum output of 2.3 mVpp at 20 kfci. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Upper critical magnetic fields Hc2(T) have been measured resistively for the high-temperature (Tc(approximately-greater-than)90 K) superconductors TmBa2Cu3O9−δ and YBa2Cu3O9−δ in applied magnetic fields H up to 9 T. If H at the resistive midpoint is defined as Hc2, then the upper critical field slopes (dHc2/dT)Tc at the superconducting transition temperatures Tc are respectively −2.8 and −1.1 T/K. The Tm-specimen initial slope is apparently the highest yet reported for 90 K superconductors. Extrapolations from this slope, based on standard, three-dimensional, dirty-limit Werthamer, Helfand, Hohenberg, and Maki theory, yield (1) zero-temperature upper critical fields Hc2(T=0)=99–175 T, where the range is determined by the degree of paramagnetic limitation; (2) Hc2(T=77 K)≈36 T, the upper critical field at the boiling point of liquid nitrogen.

Notes: Low-aspect-ratio tokamaks offer both the economic advantage of smaller size and a number of physics advantages which are not available at conventional aspect ratio. The Small Tight Aspect Ratio Tokamak (START) [Fusion Technology 1990, edited by B. E. Keen, M. Huguet, and R. Hemsworth (North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 353] was conceived as a first substantial test of tokamak plasma behavior at low aspect ratio. It has achieved plasma currents up to 200 kA, peak densities of ∼2×1020 m−3 and central electron temperatures of ∼500 eV at an aspect ratio of 1.3–1.5. Central beta values of ∼13% have been measured and the volume-averaged beta 〈β〉 can approach the Troyon limit. Plasmas are naturally elongated (κ(approximately-less-than)2.0) and are vertically stable without feedback control. Major disruptions have not been observed at low aspect ratios (A≤2.0).

Description: Several individuals of the vermilion snapper Rhomboplites aurorubens were observed swimming in hetero specific schools between 10 and 20 m depth in a coral reef at Isla Tesoro (Archipiélago del Rosario, Colombian Caribbean). One of those specimens was collected and its meristic and morphometric characters examined, as well as its stomach content and sexual maturity. A comparison with the literature on the biology and ecology of this snapper is made in an attempt to explain its presence on those conditions.
