    Notes: It is shown that the class of solutions S¯(a,0,−1/1), a real slice of the "complexified'' Plebanski S(a,b,c/m) metrics, is interpretable as colliding wave solutions and, for a=−s2, coincides precisely with the Ferrari–Ibañez colliding wave metrics.

    Notes: The Hauser–Ernst homogeneous Hilbert problem (HHP) approach, formerly used in connection with the derivation of stationary axisymmetric fields, is here adapted to the derivation of colliding gravitational plane wave solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations. Proceeding from Kasner metrics, and using a double-Harrison transformation, the HHP approach yields a three-parameter generalization of a two-parameter family of colliding wave solutions found recently by Ferrari, Ibañez, and Bruni. In the present paper we provide the details concerning the derivation of this new family of solutions, and we set the stage for future applications of the HHP approach in connection with gravitational waves.

Lett. 39, 1379 (1977)] provides a new solution of the Einstein field equations describing colliding gravitational plane waves with noncollinear polarization, the first of an infinite sequence of solutions that can be generated using techniques described in this paper.

    Notes: Within nonlinear electrodynamics of Born–Infeld type allowing for the freedom of duality rotations, explicit type D solutions are constructed. The obtained type D solutions, which generalize the charged Taub–NUT (Newman–Unti–Tamburino) metric with λ, exhaust all solutions within the considered class, under the assumption that the real eigenvectors of the electromagnetic field are aligned along the geodesic and shear-free principal null directions. Various relevant limiting transitions, in particular those of the flat space-time, are studied in some detail.

    Notes: A simple criterion for colliding gravitational plane waves is developed. This colliding wave condition is preserved by a new realization of the Geroch group augmented by a Kramer–Neugebauer involution. A three-parameter generalization of a two-parameter family of solutions with noncollinear polarization discovered recently by Ferrari, Ibañez, and Bruni is presented, and two additional solutions are derived that demonstrate that much larger families are likely to be constructed in the near future.

    Notes: Within the type-D Carter metric structure with a perfect fluid source, it is established that the Wahlquist metric and a new divergenceless solution are the only perfect fluid solutions satisfying positive energy and regularity conditions. The divergenceless solution, obtainable also as a limiting transition of the Wahlquist one, is endowed with three arbitrary parameters, and contains the Kramer fluid solution as a particular case. The fluid four-velocity of these metrics does not lie in the two-space spanned by the double principal null directions of the Weyl tensor.

    Notes: Cobalt nanowires have been electrodeposited into the pores of Anodisc™ alumina membranes after placing on one side a layer of sputtered copper, which acts as electrode and substrate during the electrodeposition. Nanowires are 60 μm long, 170–220 nm in diameter depending on the size of the pores of the alumina membrane. This array of nanowires exhibits uniaxial magnetic anisotropy related to the particular shape of each individual nanowire. On the contrary to the expected behavior in a uniaxial magnetic system, the coercivity of the array exhibits a maximum when the applied field is in a perpendicular direction with respect to the easy axis. This magnetic behavior is analyzed considering dipolar interactions among nanowires, and the magnetization of the array is obtained as a function of the magnetic characteristics of each nanowire using an iterative method. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Changes in amounts of macro-(N, P, K) and micro-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) were determined in two calcareous soils amended over an eight-month period with pig slurry applications ranging from 0 to 500 m3/ha, and planted in containers with green pepper (Capsicum annuum). Total N and exchangeable K increased after slurry applications of 300 m3/ha or more, and available P increased after the smallest application rate (100m3/ha). Maximum crop nutrient uptakes of 41, 40 and 91% for N, P and K occurred with the smallest dose of slurry. Large losses of N, ranging from 27 to 74% (mean 55%) of N added to soil, occurred with all slurry treatments. From 41 to 71% (mean 55%) of the total P added in pig slurry was fixed in non-assimilable forms. Most of the K from the pig slurry was available to the plants. Most of the micro-nutrients (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) from the slurry were immobilized in the soil, probably because of the high pH and the small amounts of organic matter in both the slurries and soils tested.

    Notes: Extraordinary magnetoresistance effect has been found in Ni/Co sputtered multilayers. Magnetoresistance values higher than 130% are achieved at room temperature with a saturation magnetic field of 35 Oe, using a particular arrangement of contacts. The large anisotropic magnetoresistance and the low coercivity of these samples are the origin of such an outstanding property. The results reported here seem to have promising applications in magnetoresistive devices. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
