Notes: A Monte Carlo algorithm based on the hybrid Ising-DIFFOUR model is proposed to investigate the phase transition in ferroelectromagnetic lattice in which the ferroelectric order and antiferromagnetic order coexist below a certain temperature. The Ising spin moment and ferroelectric displacement and their susceptibilities as well, as a function of temperature for systems of different magnetoelectric couplings, are simulated and compared with the mean-field approach. The typical antiferromagnetic transition at Néel point and the ferroelectric transition at Curie point are observed at zero coupling. It is demonstrated that a weak ferromagnetic order can be activated by introducing the magnetoelectric coupling or applying external magnetic field, while the external electric field has little effect on the ferromagnetic ordering behavior. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A multichannel far-infrared (FIR) hydrogen cyanide (HCN) laser interferometer was developed to measure plasma electron density profile on the HT-6M tokamak. The structure of the seven-channel FIR laser interferometer is described. The laser source used in the interferometer was a continuous-wave glow discharge HCN laser with a cavity length of 3.4 m and power output of about 100 mW at 337 μm. The detection sensitivity was 1/15 fringe with a temporal resolution of 0.1 ms. Experimental results were measured by the seven-channel FIR HCN laser interferometer with edge Ohmic heating, a pumping limiter, and ion cyclotron resonant heating on the HT-6M tokamak are reported. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present an absolute measurement of a two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient of C60 thin film at 633 nm. Large values of β≈4.4 cm/W were determined. A nearly resonant TPA transition around the 3.76 eV absorption region was discussed.

Notes: Deep level transient spectroscopy and double correlation technique were used to examine the annealing and profiles of interstitial iron in boron-doped silicon at a temperature range from 50 to 400 °C. The results show that iron-boron pairs begin to break-up at a temperature as low as 50 °C. After a short time annealing (5 min) at a temperature up to 400 °C, most of the iron from the breaking is converted into interstitial iron. We also find that the distribution of interstitial iron under the silicon surface is not uniform, and it depends on the annealing time and temperature. The interstitial iron near the silicon surface decreases with the increase of the annealing time.

Notes: We describe efficient electroluminescence from a terbium complex, tris-(1-phenyl-3-methyl-4isobutyryl-5-pyrozolone)-bis(triphenyl phosphine oxide) terbium (PTT). The green-emitting material possesses much higher photoluminescence efficiency compared to the commonly used green light emitter, 8-hydroxyquinoline aluminum (ALQ). The rarely observed emission from the hole transport layer, N, N′-bis (3-methylphenyl)- N, N′-diphenyl-benzidine (TPD) of the device ITO/TPD/PTT/Al proves that PTT also is a good electron transporting material. The ITO/TPD/PTT/ALQ/Al device shows luminance up to 920 cd/m2 at a drive voltage of 18 V and a luminous efficiency of 0.51 lm/W at a current density of 0.70 mA/cm2, which are up to now the highest among devices using rare-earth complex materials as emitters. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ferroelectric polymorph of lead metaniobate (PbNb2O6) exhibits an orthorhombic structure, which is metastable at room temperature and can only be obtainable by quenching from high temperatures (∼1200 °C). In this letter, we report a ferroelectric PbNb2O6 thin film doped with SrTiO3 (Pb0.95Sr0.05(Nb2)0.98Ti0.05O6) with orthorhombic structure on Pt/Ti/Si substrate, which was prepared via a sol-gel route. The orthorhombic structure was developed at 900 °C at a normal heating rate of 5 °C/min and cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The PbNb2O6 film exhibited a remanent polarization (Pr) of 12.3 μC/cm2 and a coercive field (Ec) of 39 kV/cm, respectively, when measured at an applied field of 143 kV/cm. The leakage current density was 1.02×10−5 A/cm2 at 100 kV/cm. The room-temperature dielectric constant and dissipation factor was stable (∼325 and ∼1.5%, respectively) over a frequency range of 1 kHz to 1 MHz. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The relative distributions of 12 HLA-DR6-related HLA-DRB1 alleles in indigenous populations of Australia, Melanesia, Polynesia, Micronesia, and northern and southern China have been determined by analysis of nucleotide sequence polymorphisms in 364 examples of HLA-DR6 positive chromosomes. Oligonucleotide hybridizations of polymerase chain reaction products of HLA-DQA1, DQB1, DRB1 and DRB3 genes generated 24 HLA-DR6-related haplotypes. The study aimed to determine the regional distribution of DR DQ haplotypes associated with three novel HLA-DR6 alleles, namely DRB1*1408, 1409, and 1410, known to occur in Australian Aborigines, to gain further insights into the molecular phylogeny of these alleles. DRB1*1408 was the most common HLA-DR6 subtype in Oceania, although it was not detected in Chinese. In Australian Aborigines and Papua New Guinean highlanders, DRB1*1408 was associated with DRB3*0202, while in Polynesians and Micronesians it was associated with DRB3*0101. The different haplotype arrangements, together with the near absence of DRB1*1408 in coastal Melanesians, suggest the possibility that two independent mutations have generated DRB1*1408 in Australia and Oceania. DRB1*1409 and 1410 alleles were confined to Australian Aborigines, while DRB1*1407 was found exclusively in Melanesians; DRB1*1401 was the only HLA-DR6 allele represented in all study populations. The population-specific HLA-DR6 alleles and haplotypes have important implications for unrelated bonemarrow donor registries in Australia and Oceania.

Notes: This paper describes an initial but fundamental attempt to lay some groundwork for a fuzzy-set-based paradigm for sensory analysis and to demonstrate how fuzzy set and neural network techniques may lead to a natural way for sensory data interpretation. Sensory scales are described as fuzzy sets, sensory attributes as fuzzy variables, and sensory responses as sample membership grades. Multi-judge responses are formulated as a fuzzy membership vector or fuzzy histogram of response, which gives an overall panel response free of the unverifiable assumptions implied in conventional approaches. Neural networks are used to provide an effective tool for modeling and analysis of sensory responses in their naturally fuzzy and complex forms. A maximum method of defuzzification is proposed to give a crisp grade of the majority opinion. Two applications in meat quality evaluation are used to demonstrate the use of the paradigm and procedure. It is hoped that this work will bring up some new ideas and generate interest in research on application of fuzzy sets and neural networks in sensory analysis.

Notes: Image processing techniques were used to characterize an extruded food product. Several image features in color and surface texture were developed and tested for their effectiveness to reflect changes in product appearance resulting from variations in extrusion conditions. The effects of process variables were related to the image features. Hue function conveyed more information about surface texture than did saturation or intensity functions.
