Notes: Summary A homologous series of cycloalkanes from (CH2)14 up to (CH2)96 as model systems for tight folding in CH2-chain molecules was investigated by infrared spectroscopy. In comparison with the corresponding spectra of the nalkanes we found two additional new absorption bands at 700 cm−1 and 1442 cm−1 which can be assigned to a characteristic fold vibration. The already known fold band in the wagging region at about 1344 cm−1 could also be found in all cycloalkane spectra. A numerical decomposition of the bands enables the calibration of the fold concentration. The Davydov splitting of the (CH2)-rocking and (CH2)-bending vibration in the melt crystallized form of the molecules (CH2)72 and (CH2)96 show the occurence of a orthorhombic subcell of the larger rings whereas the smaller rings and the larger ones in the solution crystallized form only crystallize in a monoclinic form.

Notes: Abstract In the first holographic bubble chamber experiment — the HOBC experiment — we have accumulated a total of 40000 holograms with particle interactions. We have determined the total charm pair cross section inpN collisions to be 23.3 −7.7 +10 μb and 3.6 −1.7 +2.3 μb for 360 and 200 GeV/c incident protons respectively. We have assumed a linear dependence of the cross section on the atomic number of the target. This experiment has demonstrated the feasibility of holographic recording in small bubble chambers. Assuming that the charm cross section can be described by the standard QCD factorized expression with gluon fusion and quark-antiquark annihilation, we have used our measured charm cross sections with other measurements to determine the effective charmed quark mass to be 1.8 −0.35 +0.25 GeV/c2. TheK factor, which describes the importance of the higher order corrections, is calculated to be 9.8 −6.9 +12.5 (See noted added in proof.)

Notes: Abstract Qualitative samples of Collembola were obtained from a range of substrates near Husvik, Stromness Bay, South Georgia, between January and March 1996. Collections made at Hope Point near Grytviken (Cumberland East Bay) in 1980/1982 and 1997 were also examined. Fifteen species of Collembola were recorded around Husvik; most were widely distributed. Two of these, Friesia sp. nov. and Cryptopygus badasa, represent additions to the previously recognised fauna of 17 species. A new record of an introduced species, Hypogastrura purpurescens, was identified in collections from Hope Point in 1980/1982, bringing the total South Georgian fauna to 20 species. A key to South Georgian Collembola is included. H. purpurescens and the congeneric Hypogastrura viatica, both cosmopolitan invasive species, have also been recognised on other sub-Antarctic islands and have displaced resident species from some habitats. Their presence on South Georgia, and the dominance of H. viatica in some habitats, highlight the importance of strict quarantine measures to avoid the introduction of further alien invertebrates.

Notes: Abstract Radiolabeled human β2-microglobulin (β2m) can bind to mouse histocompatibility (H-2) antigens on the cell surface or to partially purified H-2 antigens in solution. The complexes containing human β2m and H-2 antigens from C3H (H-2k) mice could be immunoprecipitated specifically with alloantisera, rabbit anti-H-2 xenoantisera, and with monoclonal H-2-specific antibodies. Specific association with H-2 antigens was also observed with other haplotypes. The only exception was B10.D2 (H-2 d ) from which complexes containing human β2M could only be precipitated with anti-H-2 xenosera. Thus radiolabeled human β2M can be used as a specific label for mouse H-2 antigens in precipitation and radioimmunoassays. The application of this finding extends to major histocompatibility complex antigens of other species, and to differentiation antigens with primary association with β2m.

Notes: Abstract The specificity of the mouse class I-specific antibody COB6-3 was examined in detail. It was found to react with the mouse class I molecules H-2Db, Kd, and Qa-2, and with human HLA-A, −B, −C antigens. The specificity pattern of COB6-3, despite its different origin, was similar to that of the monomorphic HLA class I-specific antibody W6/32. Cross-inhibition studies show that on human cells the antigenic determinants recognized by the two antibodies are situated close together and may be identical. On mouse cells, reactivity of both antibodies was generated upon replacement of mouse beta-2 microglobulin (B2m) with its bovine counterpart, but differences in specificity were observed using human B2m.

Notes: Summary This experiment investigated the effect of parental nutrient shortage on the allocation of five nutrients to seeds and rhizomes in Sorghum halepense, a perennial, noxious weed, and to seeds in Sorghum bicolor, an annual, cultivated species. Plants from both species were grown from seeds and supplied with fertilizer at three concentrations. The allocation of biomass and nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) to reproductive and vegetative parts was determined. Relative biomass allocation to reproduction (either sexual or vegetative) remained constant in S. halepense in spite of large differences in total plant weight. In S. bicolor, however, biomass allocation to sexual reproductive structures decreased significantly with decreasing nutrient supply. Individual seed weight was not modified by parental nutrient supply in S. halepense, but it increased with decreasing nutrient availability in S. bicolor. Important differences in mineral allocation to seeds were found between the two species. While S. bicolor seeds were largely buffered from the differences in parental nutrient status, concentration of nutrients in S. halepense seeds decreased significantly with decreasing supply for all the nutrients analyzed except Ca. However, mineral nutrient concentration in S. halepense rhizomes remained remarkably constant despite differences in the external supply, evincing the priority given to vegetative reproduction at the expense of sexual reproduction. Overall, the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. bicolor seeds under different nutrient supply resembled the pattern observed in S. halepense rhizomes, but it had little resemblance to the pattern of nutrient allocation in S. halepense seeds. The results are discussed in terms of differences and similarities in the reproductive strategy of these two species.

Notes: Summary For smoothing and differentiation of digitized spectra using the Discrete Fourier Transform the inversion of data is presented as a new data preprocessing procedure. Contrary to the usual procedure, even in critical cases no artifacts are produced by smoothing and differentiation. Due to the utilization of a tailored algorithm, the computing performance does not seriously suffer. With regard to storage the new approach is equivalent and needs only slightly increased computing time compared to the previous method.

Notes: Summary In a duplicate study during 1987–1991, 478 24-h duplicate samples from 14 homes for elderly people and 10 homes for youth were investigated for their contents of selected harmful substances. The analyses covered 45 active substances of pesticides, 17 PCB-congeners as well as lead, cadmium, and nitrate contents. Pesticides could be detected only in 15% of the investigated samples. The pesticide contents reached max. 8% of the respective FAO/WHO-limits. As the mean intake of the three most important PCB-congeners (sum of the congeners 138, 153, and 180) values of 0.9 and 1.1 μg per day and ration or person, respectively, were found. Also in the worst case the daily PCB intake was below the recommended ADI value of the FDA of 1 μg/kg of body weight. The daily nutritional intake of lead and cadmium via the investigated daily rations reached about 5.6% and 20% of the Provisionally Tolerably Weekly Intake values of the FAO/WHO. The mean nitrate content of the duplicate portions was 101 mg per day and person (median: 79 mg per day and person). Referred to the median value the WHO limit (3.65 mg/kg body weight and day) was exhausted to about 36%.
