    Notizen: Abstract We have studied the effects of various meteorologicalparameters and plant distribution on the airborneconcentrations of three different pollen types:Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae, Quercus and Olea, in the city of Cartagena, situated in SouthwestEurope. The aerobiological study has been carried outfrom March 1993 to March 1997, using a Hirst-typeLanzoni 2000 trap, situated on the roof of the citytrain station. Meteorological data were supplied bythe Environmental Service of Cartagena's Town Hall.Daily pollen concentrations were standardised.Correlation analysis showed the importance ofmeteorological data on airborne pollen concentrations.On the other hand, ANOVA analyses depicted theinfluence of vegetation distribution in relation tosampler location and wind directions. Finally,multiple regression analyses allowed us to developcorrelation models for the three different pollentypes considered, accounting for 32%(Chenopodiaceae-Amaranthaceae), 19% (Quercus),and 26% (Olea) of the variation in the airbornepollen concentration.

    Notizen: Abstract This paper presents a simple, reliable, economical, safe, accurate and reproducible method for atmospheric aerosol lead determination in glass fiber filters, consisting on an acid digestion procedure and atomic absorption spectrometry quantification. The acid digestion is accelerated by the use of a microwave oven with capped Teflon PFA vessels, and a two steps power and time program. The mixture of 10 mL HNO3 and 1 mL HF was selected between many tries, for both economic and environmental reasons. The use of direct standards for quantification is proposed instead of added standards on filters, using background correction (deuterium lamp). The filter lead content quantification was carried out through blank analyses. Lead determinations were carried out then in 2629 samples of atmospheric aerosol at three sampling points in the city of Cartagena (Spain), from 1990 to 1994. We present the annual average of these values for each year and sampling location.

    Combination of the W boson polarization measurements in top quark decays using ATLAS and CMS data at $$ sqrt{s} $$ = 8 TeV (2020)

    Beschreibung: The combination of measurements of the W boson polarization in top quark decays performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations is presented. The measurements are based on proton-proton collision data produced at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb−1 for each experiment. The measurements used events containing one lepton and having different jet multiplicities in the final state. The results are quoted as fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (F0), left-handed (FL), or right-handed (FR) polarizations. The resulting combined measurements of the polarization fractions are F0 = 0.693 ± 0.014 and FL = 0.315 ± 0.011. The fraction FR is calculated from the unitarity constraint to be FR = −0.008 ± 0.007. These results are in agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and represent an improvement in precision of 25 (29)% for F0 (FL) with respect to the most precise single measurement. A limit on anomalous right-handed vector (VR), and left- and right-handed tensor (gL, gR) tWb couplings is set while fixing all others to their standard model values. The allowed regions are [−0.11, 0.16] for VR, [−0.08, 0.05] for gL, and [−0.04, 0.02] for gR, at 95% confidence level. Limits on the corresponding Wilson coefficients are also derived.

    Notizen: Abstract Mating behavior and factors affecting mating success of males were studied using wild Anastrepha ludens on a fieldcaged host tree. The most common courtship sequence had five components: (1) male calls from the underside of a leaf, (2) female arrives to the maleoccupied leaf, (3) male orients to female and stops calling, (4) one or both approach to a face-to-face position 1–3 cm apart, and (5) male mounts female after 1–2 s. Courtship behavior was almost identical to that of laboratoryculture flies observed previously under laboratory conditions. Most malefemale encounters occurred at a height of 1–2m, well inside the outer canopy of the tree. Differential mating success by males occurred. No male mated more than once per day, owing possibly to a very short sexual activity period. Factors favoring mating success of males were survival ability and tendency to join male aggregations and to fight other males. Thorax length and age (9–11 days difference) had no effects on male copulatory success. Overall win/loss percentage was not related to mating success because the males that were most successful at mating fought mostly among themselves, driving their win/loss percentage down. However, these successful males (at mating) won most of their fights against less successful males. Results confirmed a lek mating system: males aggregated, called, and defended territories; territories did not contain femalerequired resources; and females exercised mate choice, apparently through selection of sites within leks.

    The effect of nest size on stone-gathering behaviour in the chinstrap penguin (1999)

    Notizen: Abstract Stone-collecting behaviour was studied in a colony of chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica), to explore the likely importance of nest size. We randomly categorised nests as control or experimental. All nests were weighed at the beginning of the incubation period. In the experimental nests we removed stones constituting 50% of their initial weight, while in the control nests all the stones were returned after weighing. All nests were weighed again either prior to or just after hatching to determine likely changes in their weight. The mean weight increase of experimental nests was significantly higher than the mean weight increase of control nests. Size represents a property of the nest which individuals continuously monitor throughout the incubation/brooding period, reacting to changes in it by appropriate changes in stone-collecting rate.

    Notizen: Abstract Mushroom poisonings caused by amatoxins are mostly lethal. Information about mycetisms caused by white species ofAmanita is scarce. The present paper describes a case of mushroom poisoning caused byA. virosa. A prolongated latency period (6–10 hours), followed by cholera-like, improvement and visceral complication phases confirmed the amatoxin poisoning. The consumption of about 3 pounds of the toadstool by seven persons caused the death of five. Two patients survive the ingestion.

    Notizen: Abstract To study the titanium effect on P nutrition, a greenhouse experiment withCapsicum annuum L., cv. Bunejo plants growing under differential P fertilization was conducted. All the plants were grown under identical conditions and they only differred in the P fertilization and in Ti supply. Plant biomass production of the Ti-untreated plants was affected by the diminution of the P-feed, but the plants growing under the lowest P supply did not showed any deficiency symptom during the crop cycle. All the Ti-treated plots showed a significative increase of the plant biomass against their corresponding untreated references. The biomass enhancement was mainly caused by the increase of the fruit yield with an absolute enhancement of 62% in the plants growing under the lowest P feed, and of 45% in the plants with a complete P support.

A freshwater fish species, silverside (Odontesthes bonariensis) from Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Argentina, was analyzed for concentrations of several organochlorine pesticides (OCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in liver, gonads, mesenteric fat and muscle, and the contents of the digestive tract over several stages of sexual maturation. PCBs and OCs were detected at ng/g concentrations (wet weight) in pooled samples, with levels generally in the order of fat 〉 liver 〉 gonad 〉 muscle, reflecting the differences in tissue lipid content. Lipid-normalized concentrations of the analytes were relatively consistent among tissues, except for significantly higher concentrations of PCBs (e.g., 447.7 ng/g lipid wt) in the ovaries of female silverside. DDT and its metabolites, γ-HCH, and several insecticides from the cyclodiene class, including endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate, were the predominant OCs in fish tissues and the contents of the digestive tract, reflecting recent and past pesticide use in this region. The ratio of OCs to PCBs in all tissues was 〉1; consistent with contamination of the region with OC pesticides. However, PCBs were dominated by penta- and hexachlorobiphenyls, which is consistent with direct (i.e., nonatmospheric) inputs. Biomagnification of penta- and hexachlorobiphenyl PCB congeners was noted in fish tissues relative to the contents of the digestive tract. Total OC and PCB concentrations in the ovaries and muscle of silverside were below concentrations associated with reproductive impairment in fish or the limits for human consumption, respectively.

    Notizen: Abstract Serre has obtained sharp estimates for the number of rational points on an algebraic curve over a finite field. In this paper we supplement his technique with divisibility properties for exponential sums to derive new bounds for exponential sums in one and several variables. The new bounds give us an improvement on previous bounds for the minimum distance of the duals of BCH codes. The divisibility properties also imply the existence of gaps in the weight distribution of certain cyclic codes, and in particular gives us that BCH codes are divisible (in the sense of H. N. Ward).
