Notes: A new approach to the boundary value problem for the classic Dirac equation is proposed. This approach is based on a recent version of the metaharmonic quaternionic analysis developed in [14-16]. In particular, the following problem is studied: when and how a given function on a surface can be extended to a time-harmonic spinor field.

Notes: A high precision triangular thick orthotropic plate bending element on an elastic foundation is developed for the free vibration analysis of thick plates on elastic foundation. The element has three nodes with twelve degrees-of-freedom per node, and takes into account the shear deformation and rotatory inertia. The accuracy of the element is established by comparison of the natural frequencies of certain thick and thin plates, determined from a consistent mass matrix formulation, with available results.

Notes: The Possibility of the application of the finite element method to some problems of nonlinear optics is investigated in this paper. The self-action of a light beam in a nonlinear medium is considered. The general approach to the cretion of conservative computation schemes is presented, based on varitional principles. Definite schemes, which are applicable for the problem of thermal self-action, are described in detail both in the case of cylindrical and or rectangular co-ordinates. The accuracy and convergence of the models are analysed. The results of computation of the self-action problems in motionless and moving media are presented.

Notes: This article describes-a new method, suitable for use on a digital computer, for evaluating the singular double integral of Hayes which determines the transonic wave drag of a slender body. Comparison with known exact results and with an earlier computer program described by Eminton shows the present method to be accurate as well as economic in computer time.

Notes: The method of lowering the order of a matrix equation which describes the dynamics of a finite element model is presented. The finite element with a ‘truncated’ mass matrix is obtained for calculating thin plate vibrations. Such an element has one vibrational degree of freedom at each nodal point. In the case of uniform systems the accuracy provided by the suggested element is no less than that provided by the non-conforming elements, which have three vibrational degrees of freedom at each nodal point, and in some cases it is greater. The finite elements with a ‘truncated’ mass matrix have essential advantages in the study of non-uniform systems.

Notes: A direct variational method has been considered for solving mixed boundary value problems for linear elliptical equations. The main idea of the method consists in searching the unknown solution in a class of functions satisfying the differential equation and some of the boundary conditions. The functional to be minimized may be expressed in terms of the boundary values of the unknown solution, and thus the dimension of the variational problem is reduced. Reduction of the functional defined on the domain to a functional on its boundary corresponds to the common in the elsaticity theory of application of Clapeyron's theorem for the transformation of functionals of minimum elastic potential energy and complementary work. The reduced problem may be solved by the Ritz direct method. Some examples from the elasticity and seepage theories have been given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Among the problems that have been solved by the method we may mention the plane elastic problem for a crack in a strip, three-dimensional elastic problems for a plane rectangular crack in an infinite elastic medium and the problem of a rectangular die in sliding contact with an elastic half-space (numerical solutions exhibit correct asymptotic behaviour in the neighbourhood of corners of cracks or die), and the plane and axisymmetric seepage problems.

Notes: A method for the numerical solution of singular integro-differential equations is proposed. The approximate solution is sought in the form of the sum of a power series with unknown coefficients multiplied by a special term which controls the appropriate solution behaviour near and at the edges of the interval. The coefficients are to be determined from a system of linear algebraic equations. The method is applied to the solution of a contact problem of a disk inserted in an infinite elastic plane. Exact analytical solution is obtained for the particular case when the disk is of the same material as the plane. Comparison is made between the exact and the approximate solutions as well as with the solutions previously available in literature. The stability and the accuracy of the present method is investigated under variation of the parameters involved. The applicability of the method to the case when the boundary conditions for the unknown function are nonzero is discussed along with an illustrative example. A FORTRAN subroutine for the numerical solution of singular integro-differential equations is also provided.

Notes: The Dirichlet problem for the Stokes system in a dihedral angle is considered. An explicit description of special solutions to the homogeneous problem which have the form\documentclass{minimal} \begin{document} \begin{eqnarray*} U(x) &=&\left| x\right| ^\lambda \sum_{0\leq k\leq \kappa }\frac{(\log \left| x\right|)^{\kappa -k}}{(\kappa -k)!}u^{(k)}(x/\left| x\right|), \\ P(x) &=&\left| x\right| ^{\lambda -1}\sum_{0\leq k\leq \kappa }\frac{(\log \left| x\right|)^{\kappa -k}}{(\kappa -k)!}p^{(k)}(x/\left| x\right|) \end{eqnarray*} \end{document}is given. © 1997 by B. Notes: The paper presents a distributed computing approach for concurrent finite element analysis of truss structures. The client-server model of distributed computation is applied to the plane frame finite element algorithm and implemented on SUN workstations. The remote procedure call combined with the ability to create threads of computation allows one to efficiently implement distributed and concurrent programs. The present approach is demonstrated through a typical truss structure to illustrate the details of the implementation. This approach can be used for very large finite element systems.

Notes: The residual bending flexibility correction is an extra-variational trick used to enhance the convergence rate of shear flexible beam and plate elements. In the paper we show how this can affect the shear deflection and shear force estimates in the QUAD4 element.
