Description: using tiltmeters and GPS observations. The study region is located in northeastern Italy, in the seismic area of the Cansiglio Plateau. The Zöllner type Marussi tiltmeters are installed in a natural cavity (Bus de la Genziana) that is part of an interesting karstic area of particular hydrogeologic importance. The Livenza river forms from a number of springs at the foothills of the karstic massif and flows through the Friuli-Veneto plain into the Adriatic Sea. Comparing the tiltmeter signal recorded at the Genziana station with the local pluviometrical series and the hydrometric series of the Livenza river, a clear correlation is recognized. Moreover, the data of a permanent GPS station located on the southern slopes of the Cansiglio Massif (CANV) show also a clear correspondence with the water runoff. Here we present the hydrologic induced deformations as observed by tiltmeter and GPS. After heavy rain events we record rapid deformations both by tiltmeters and GPS corresponding to the rainfall duration. In the following days a slow geodetic motion recovers the accumulated deformation with a distinctive pattern both in tilt and GPS data, which correlates with the runoff of the karstic aquifer. The purpose of this research is to open a new multidisciplinary frontier between geodetic and karstic systems studies to improve the knowledge of the underground fluid flow circulation in karstic areas. Furthermore a better characterization of the hydrologic effects on GPS and tilt observations will have the benefit that these signals can be corrected when the focus of the study is to recover the tectonic deformation.

Notes: Abstract Energy loss of slow protons in a degenerate electron gas is calculated on the basis of the dielectric theory. The influence of static and dynamic local field corrections is examined. Comparison with well defined experimental data is made.

Notes: Summary Relative DNA-contents of hepatocyte nuclei have been determined in young, old, and thymus-grafted old mice. There is an age-dependent increase in the occurrence of tetraploid nuclei, which is in agreement with previous data regarding the nuclear volume of hepatocytes. The neonatal thymus grafted into old recipients decreased the percentage of tetraploid cells to a statistically significant extent.

Notes: Abstract The dependence on the bombarding energy of the number of ejected electrons from a policrystalline Ag target is determined. Statistical methods are used in the calculation of the inelastic energy loss due to binary atomic collisions and in that of the electronic stopping cross-section. The calculation is executed for the case of Se+ bombarding ion in the 10–200 keV energy range.

Notes: Summary The activity of glycolysis and hexose monophosphate shunt decreases while the activity of some oxydative enzymes and acid phosphatase increases in the anterior pituitary of adult female rats during starvation. The alterations depend on the severity of starvation. The polypeptide hormone production also decreases. A close relationship exists between the metabolic activity of the gland and its endocrine function.

Notes: Summary Cultured cells from the anterior pituitary glands of adult rats were treated with the tripeptide aldehyde proteinase inhibitor, Boc-Gln-Leu-Lys-H. The oligopeptide had a profound relesing effect on growth hormone, whereas the prolactin release remained unchanged at 10−3 mol/l drug concentration after an incubation for 2 h. In the presence of the oligopeptide a time- and dose-dependent calcium influx into cultured cells has been shown which was proved to be almost completely antagonized with magnesium ions but not with Nifedipine. In addition, radioactive calcium ions could be detected in a number of cells by light microscopic autoradiography when cultures were treated with Boc-Gln-Leu-Lys-H for short periods. The selective Gel action of the oligopeptide on growth hormone producing cells has been demonstrated also in fine structural investigations: multigranular and single exocytotic profiles have been observed. Accordingly, we have postulated that Boc-Gln-Leu-Lysinal mimics the effects of the known ionophores. Its mode of action needs, however, further studies especially on isolated somatotrophs.

Notes: Summary Membrane-limited electron-dense inclusions designated as elementary neurosecretory granules have a characteristic distribution in cerebropleural ganglia of the nudibranch snail Tritonia diomedia. They occur in the neuropile and also in individual nerve fibres, connectives and commissures. These granules have been found neither in perikarya of nerve cells nor in proximal segments of their processes. Specific fluorescence obtained in Tritonia preparations with Sterba's pseudoisocyanin method for neurosecretory products has the same pattern of location. The distribution of stainable material in preparations prepared with ordinary neurosecretory procedures (chrome haematoxylin-phloxin after Gomori-Bargmann and paraldehydefuchsin after Gomori-Gabe) is similar to that described by different authors in other gastropods, but strongly differs from the locationof elementary neurosecretory granules and of pseudoisocyanin-positive material. The adequacy of different histological methods for studying neurosecretion in gastropods is discussed.
