Notes: The electron impact (EI) mass spectra (75 eV) of the new carboxylic acid ionophore griseochelin and some of its derivatives are discussed. The mass spectral fragmentation was studied using exact mass measurements and deuterium labelling. Furthermore, the negative ion mass spectra (2-4 eV) of these compounds are compared with their EI mass spectra.

Notes: New chiral polymers have been prepared by conversion of cyano groups of polysiloxanes XE-60 and OV-225 into carboxylic groups and subsequent coupling to give the respective S-valine-R-α-phenyl-ethyl amide. In contrast to the corresponding stationary phases with S-α-phenylethyl amide groups, which have been used for the resoultion of trifluoroacetylated hexose derivatives, the new phase show high enantioselectivity for pentose and 6-deoxyhexose derivatives.

Notes: The applicability of capillary columns for gas chromatography is often limited by stationary phase degradation at elevated temperatures. In order to achieve a better understanding of column thermostability, column bleed products have been analyzed qualitatively by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Three silicone stationary phases were studied: SE-52, SE-54, and OV-1701. Each of these was immobilized in the columns. The proportion of cyclics containing diphenyl in column bleed from SE-52 reflected to a large extent the composition of the polymer, while for SE-54 the proportion of such cyclics was unexpectedly high. The polar moiety of OV-1701, the cyanopropyl(phenyl)siloxy unit, was found to exert a highly destabilizing effect on the polymer, and the thermal degradation products consisted mainly of cyclosiloxanes containing this unit.

Notes: This paper reports the differentiation between the enantiomers of theaspiranes and theaspirones, potent flavor compounds widely used in the flavor industry. Optically pure reference compounds of isomeric theaspiranes were obtained by enantioselective synthesis. Enantiomerically pure reference theaspirones were isolated from quince fruit; their absolute stereochemistry was assigned by CD spectroscopy. For both types of compounds the order of elution was elucidated by using authentic reference compounds. These data enabled the determination of the enantiomeric distribution of both types of compounds in a variety of plant tissues.Because of the complexity of the natural flavor isolates, compounds were identified by mass spectrometry after multidimensional gas chromatography employing a Sichromat 2 double oven chromatograph. After separation of the target compounds on the first, achiral, column (DB-5), they were transferred to a chiral column (C-Dex B) for determination of the enantiomeric distribution. Multiple ion detection (MID) enabled the determination of the enantiomeric distribution even for complex mixtures containing the target compounds at extremely low levels.

Notes: A specific and sensitive method for the determination of ethylenediamine in human plasma is described. The aqueous sample is treated with m-toluoyl chloride, yielding the N,N′-bis(m-toluoyl) derivative of the diamine, which is extracted into dichloromethane and quantitated after “on column” methylation by capillary gas liquid chromatography with alkali flame ionization detection. The corresponding derivative of putrescine serves as internal standard. The assay is reproducible and calibration curves are linear over the concentration range 0.05 to 10 μg · ml-1. The lower detection limit is about 10 ng · ml-1. The structures of the compounds of interest eluting from the capillary column are examined by gas liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. The assay has been applied to the analysis of ethylenediamine in plasma following the administration of aminophylline and ethylenediamine in a cross-over study to patients with bronchopulmonary diseases. The method also proves suitable for measuring other primary and secondary amines and diamines in aqueous solutions by gas liquid chromatography.

Notes: An analytical system for the analysis of volatiles entrained in polymers is described. This system is based on a thermal desorption oven connected to a cold trap. After enrichment of headspace vapor, trapped material is reinjected and analyzed by open tubular gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, OTGC/FTIR. The thermal desorption oven is designed to provide different modes of sample introduction: use of a pyroprobe; insertion of a piece of quartz tubing with applied sample; or syringe injection. Headspace enrichment is carried out in a piece of fused silica capillary tubing filled with glass beads. The trap may be cooled either electrically using Peltier elements or with liquid nitrogen. A six-port rotary valve is used for flow switching between enrichment and reinjection modes. All system parameters, temperatures, and timed events, are controlled from the gas chromatograph. Dynamic headspace analysis is demonstrated as a method for polymer characterization.

Notes: The properties of hexakis(3-O-acetyl-2,6-di-O-pentyl)-α-cyclodextrin as a chiral stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography are described. For the first time the enantiomers of a series of different lactones are separated and their order of elution is assigned. Moreover, the enantiomers of trifluoroacetylated aldols and amino alcohols, the cyclic carbonates of 1,2-diols, 1,3-diols, O-alkylated glycerols, and some chiral pharmaceuticals are also separated on the new chiral phase. The modified α-cyclodextrin is stable above 200°C.

Notes: The electron impact mass spectra of nine solanidane N-oxides show, in addition to the known typical fragmentation pattern of the solanidane moiety, the fragment ions [M - C5H9]+ and [C6H12NO]+, due to thermal Cope syn-eliminations caused by the N-oxide function and subsequent cleavage of the bonds between C(22) and C(23) and between C(20) and C(22), respectively, in the so-obtained cyclic N,N-dialkylhydroxylamines.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectra of a tripeptide Pro-Leu-Gly-NH2, a pentapeptide Cbz-Gly-Pro-Leu-Gly-Pro and a nonapeptide Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe-Arg are presented. In each case, a [M]+· or [M + 1]+ peak of the peptide is obtained. Sufficient fragmentation of the peptide backbone occurred to allow sequence determination of all three peptides. The pentapeptide produced [M]+·, [M + 1]+ and [M + 2]+· ions which also included molecules of ethylacetate, ethanol and/or water bound to the ion.
