Notes: Abstract An alumina-supported KF catalyst shows a high activity for the disproportionation of trimethoxysilane to give silane and tetramethoxysilane. Using KF (2-15 mmol g-1)/Al2O3, a 76% trimethoxysilane conversion was obtained for the reaction at 393 K in a fixed-bed flow reactor.

Notes: Abstract The disproportionation of triethoxysilane was carried out in a fixed-bed flow reactor over the solids obtained by heat-treating calcium hydroxide at various temperatures. In the disproportionation, the reaction proceeding to completeness to afford silane and tetraethoxysilane occurs to far lesser extent: predominantly diethoxysilane is obtained together with tetraethoxysilane. Dimethoxysilane is obtained by the disproportionation of trimethoxysilane also over the heat- treated calcium hydroxide.

Notes: Abstract An analysis of the vegetation of four islands of the Krakatau group (Rakata Besar, Rakata Kecil, Sertung and Anak Krakatau), Indonesia, was conducted based on our two expeditions of 1982 in centennial commemoration of the great explosion in 1883. Pioneer communities on lava flow, ash fields, beaches, cliffs and on a scoriaceous slope were quite different from each other. Forest communities were grouped into nine types using Morisita's index of similarity, Cλ(W). Two new forest types which have never been described from Krakatau were identified: Timonius compressicaulis forest and Dysoxylum caulostachyum forest. Successional relations among these community types and the Neonauclea calycina forest were discussed from the viewpoint of seed morphology, dispersal, and the development of juvenile generations in the three types of forest. Dysoxylum forest is the most advanced forest community on the Krakatau Islands. The climax forest is supposed to be a tropical monsoon forest similar to that of the volcanic island Panaitan. A successional scheme is proposed. The invasion times of three forest dominants on the three old islands of Krakatau are compared and it is concluded that the difference in vegetation between these islands, the two Rakatas and Sertung, is determined by the earlier invasion of species which could then extend their cover and build up a forest thus preventing later invaders to establish. We are greatly indebted to Dr Fred Hehuwat, Director of the National Institute of Geology and Mining in Bandung, Mr Peter E. Hehanussa, Chief manager for soil and water resource development in the National Institute of Geology and Mining, Dr Soenartono Adisoemarto, Head of the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense, Dr Kusuwata Kartawinata, Head of the Herbarium Bogoriense, National Institute of Biology, for their kind cooper-ation and use of their facilities. We also thank the staff of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences for their invaluable help in the field and Dr P. J. Grubb who kindly commented on the manu script. The identification of flowering plants was carried out by T. Partomihardjo, who compared samples with specimens in the Herbarium Bogoriense. The identification was counterchecked by Dr M. Hotta, Associate Professor at the Yoshida College, Kyoto University. Dr C. G. G. J. van Steenis taught us a correct name of a species of Bignoniaceae. Pteridophytes were identified by Dr S. Mitsuda, Dept. of Botany, Faculty of Science, Kyoto University, and bryophytes by Dr T. Seki, Dept. of Botany, Faculty of Science, Hiroshima University.

Notes: Abstract Phaseolin, the main reserve globulin in seeds of the French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), has been purified for sedimentation equilibrium analysis. The major protomer at neutral pH has a molecular weight of 150 000±5 000 which associates to a tetrameric form of molecular weight 596 000±20 000 at pH 4.5. The trimeric nature of the protomer is apparent from protein crosslinking experiments. Initial structural studies were made using optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism measurements. Two different crystal forms of the protein have been grown and characterised by X-ray diffraction; one of these forms appears suitable for high resolution X-ray analysis.

Notes: Abstract The density of a highly viscous polyelectrolyte solution was measured using both pycnometers and oscillating-tube densimeters in parallel to elucidate the difficulties inevitably involved when an oscillating tube is employed for density measurements of viscous liquids. It was confirmed that the oscillating-tube densimeter gives too high values for viscous liquids, and the deviation increases with the increase in the viscosity of liquids. The analysis of adiabatic compressibilities of sodium hyaluronate (NaHy) solutions, as estimated from density and ultrasound velocity data of the same solution, suggests that the disaccharide unit of the NaHy chain is less hydrated than the sum of its component monosaccharide residues.

Notes: Abstract We have developed an efficient system for obtaining myeloma mutants defective intrans-acting factors required for immunoglobulin (Ig) gene expression. The system consists of a myeloma cell line designed for this purpose and an efficient method for selecting mutants from it. The cell line is X63.653 transfected with the μ gene, whose tailpiece sequence was replaced with the transmembrane sequence of human EGF receptor to hold μ on the cell surface and whose CH1 sequence was removed to prevent μ from being retained in the endoplasmic reticulum. It efficiently and stably expressed μ chains of IgM on the cell surface (μ m + ) without light chains. To obtain mutants lacking μm (μ m − ) from the μ m + cell line by selectively killing μ m + cells, a method with ricin A-conjugated anti-μ antibody was more reliable than complement lysis mediated by anti-μ antibody. Applying the system, we obtained a variety of μ m − mutants.

Notes: Abstract Two different murdochite-type mixed oxides, (Mg6−x Li x )MnO8 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) and (Mg6−x Al x )MnO8 (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) were examined for the catalytic decomposition of N2O in order to make clear the effects of mixed valencies of pairing manganese ions and oxygen vacancies. The valence of manganese ions and the amount of surface oxygen vacancies have been examined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). (Mg6−x Li x )MnO8 had mixed valence manganese ions and oxygen vacancies on the surface after the substitution. The substituted (Mg6−x Al x )MnO8 had a mixed valence state but oxygen vacancies decresed with x and excess oxygen over stoichiometry was observed at x = 0.4 and 0.6. The reaction rate of N2O decomposition increased after substitution with lithium but hardly increased after the substitution with aluminum in (Mg6−x A x )MnO8. We assumed that the presence of oxygen vacancies on the surface along with pairing altervalent manganese ions affected strongly to enhance the reactivity of N2O decomposition.
