Notes: Abstract An acoustoelastic method for residual stress measurement in slightly orthotropic materials by using ultrasonic longitudinal and shear waves is presented. A shear transducer with small vibrator 2 × 2mm2 is developed and described, and the measurement of 2-D residual stresses in a seam welded plate was carried out by this method with the shear transducer developed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The preliminary partial factorial design (orthogonal test) and modified simplex optimization as well as univariate method were used to investigate the effects of small amounts of hydrogen added to three gas flows of an argon plasma on the signal and background intensities as well as their ratios for fourteen elements. According to the behaviour in such a plasma these fourteen elements can be divided into five groups. By the addition of hydrogen signal and background intensities were increased. The signal-tobackground ratio is not the only criterion to judge the performance of a plasma. Comparing with the pure argon plasma, also the signal-to-background ratios of all elements except for Ca and Mg decreased under the optimum parameters for Ca which was the extreme case in this study. The detection limits of Fe, Cd, Cr, V, Ni and Be were improved due to the increased signal intensity and more stable plasma. Ca can easily be used as an indicator to judge the performance of an argon-hydrogen plasma especially in the determination of heavy metals. Altogether, the behaviour of the following elements was studied: Al, Be, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Ti, V, Zn.

Notes: Summary The capacity of ICP-spectroscopy for routine application to sludge and soil for supervising the contamination by heavy metals is discussed by means of some special examples. A comparison between “aqua regia” — and total ashing of sludge samples is presented. For these experiments a 16-channel ICP-spectrometer has been applied. It is concluded that this method is well suitable for supervision purposes — also for large numbers of samples.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This paper describes the method for the determination of boron in soils directly by sequential scanning ICP-AES using the side line indexing method. In order to overcome the spectral wing interference caused by iron which is the one of the major matrix constituents the side line indexing method was used, in which the B 249.678 nm line is found by referencing the side line Fe 249.653 nm. The background correction position was chosen to allow the interference from iron to be constant. The sample dissolution method was investigated to avoid losses of boron as BF3 in the HNO3/HClO4/HF decomposition procedure. Instead of mannitol orthophosphoric acid was added with HNO3/HClO4/HF mixed acids with the result of 100% recoveries of boron. NBS SRM 1571 (Orchard Leaves) spiked with iron was used to verify the accuracy of this method.

Notes: Summary A closed PTFE vessel microwave digestion method is described for the HNO3/H2O2 digestion of food samples. 0.2–0.3 g of powdered samples are completely digested in 44 ml PTFE digestion vessels by 2 ml of 70% HNO3 and 1 ml of 30% H2O2 within 2 min at 100% full power (500 W). After air-cooling for 10 min in a refrigerator at — 25°C the digestion solution is diluted to 25ml. The total elemental concentrations of Ca, Mg, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn are determined by sequential ICP-AES. The accuracy of the procedure was tested by analysis of 3 SRMs. The results are in good agreement with certified values.

Notes: Summary A simple continuous flow hydride generation system without conventional gas-liquid phase separator was developed for the determination of As, Se, Sb, Bi and Sn in biological and environmental samples by sequential ICP-AES with 1.5 kW power. The interchange of operating mode from normal solution nebulization to hydride generation or vice versa can easily be done without interrupting the plasma in this system. Two digestion methods were compared, i.e. the pressurized digestion with HNO3 in a closed vessel and HNO3/HClO4/H2SO4 acid digestion in an open system. It was found that further treatment is necessary after normal pressurized digestion for As determination in marine samples, e.g. mussel. Interferences, especially by copper and nickel were examined and completely eliminated up to 10 μg/ml by using a mixed reductant (3% NaBH4 and 2% KI) with lower flow rate as well as the sample solution media of 30% HCl (v/v) and 20% HNO3 (v/v). The effect of KI on the elemental oxidation states of As, Se and Sb is discussed. The accuracy of the method was validated by the analysis of a number of biological and environmental SRM's of NIST, BCR and NIES. Most results were in agreement with the certified values or reference values. The detection limits for these elements were in the range of 0.x ng/ml.

Notes: Summary A method is presented for the determination of gold in sludge and soil samples by sequential ICP-AES after preconcentration and separation from the common alkali and alkaline-earth metals, as well as other matrix components, e.g. iron, by a thiol-cotton fibre column. The cotton fibre, impregnated with thioacetic acid, quantitatively adsorbs gold, thus eliminating the severe spectral interferences encountered by direct ICP-AES analysis. After preconcentration and separation the results obtained at Au 242.795 nm and Au 267.595 nm agree with each other. A quantitative recovery for added spikes was obtained. The method allows the determination of gold in complex matrices such as soil or sludge samples that have been proven to be impossible by conventional ICP-AES without separation from the matrix.
