    Description: High-pressure and high-temperature torsion experiments on olivine aggregates in dislocation creep show about 15 to 20% strain weakening before steady-state behavior, characterized by subgrain-rotation recrystallization and a strong lattice preferred orientation. Such weakening may provide a way to focus flow in the upper mantle without a change in deformation mechanism. Flow laws derived from low strain data may not be appropriate for use in modeling high strain regions. In such areas, seismic wave propagation will be anisotropic with an axis of approximate rotational symmetry about the shear direction.     Description: An age-related accumulation of D-aspartic acid was detected in the white matter of ten normal brains from individuals aged 30 to 80 years. Gray matter showed no systematic increase in D-aspartic acid. The rate constant for D-aspartate formation in the brain is equal to the predicted value calculated for 37 degrees C.     Description: A multidisciplinary provenance study, including sandstone framework, heavy mineral analysis, in situ U-Pb dating of detrital zircon, and Hf isotopic ratio analysis of dated zircons, was undertaken on Late Cretaceous–Miocene deep-marine turbiditic and deltaic sandstones of Makran accretionary wedge, SE Iran, to determine their sedimentary provenance and tectonic setting. Sandstone framework modes reveal both magmatic arc rocks as a source of Late Cretaceous–Oligocene detritus and recycling of Miocene sandstones. Heavy mineral assemblages, Cr-spinel, and blue amphibole indicate ophiolite and high-pressure–low-temperature metamorphic rocks (blueschists) as a supplementary provenance. In total, 2931 laser-ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) U-Pb detrital zircon ages on 21 sandstone samples yielded three major age peaks at ca. 167 Ma, 88.7 Ma, and 48.9 Ma. Also, 241 in situ Hf isotope analyses of dated zircons provide evidence for dominantly igneous source rocks. Two main detrital zircon ages are identified: (1) abundant Middle Jurassic grains with Hf isotopic compositions of continental crust, suggesting a rifting-related magmatic provenance; and (2) Late Cretaceous–Eocene grains with Hf isotopic compositions of continental crust and nondepleted mantle, suggesting a continental magmatic arc provenance. This change in provenance is attributed to the Late Cretaceous convergence between Arabia and Eurasia.

    Description: The north-south–trending Sistan suture zone in east Iran results from the Paleogene collision of the Central Iran block to the west with the Afghan block to the east. We aim to document the tectonic context of the Sistan sedimentary basin and provide critical constraints on the closure time of this part of the Tethys Ocean. We determine the provenance of Eocene–Oligocene deep-marine turbiditic sandstones, describe the sandstone framework, and report on a geochemical and provenance study including laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb zircon ages and 415 Hf isotopic analyses of 3015 in situ detrital zircons. Sandstone framework compositions reveal a magmatic arc provenance as the main source of detritus. Heavy mineral assemblages and Cr-spinel indicate ultramafic rocks, likely ophiolites, as a subsidiary source. The two main detrital zircon U-Pb age groups are dominated by (1) Late Cretaceous grains with Hf isotopic compositions typical of oceanic crust and depleted mantle, suggesting an intraoceanic island arc provenance, and (2) Eocene grains with Hf isotopic compositions typical of continental crust and nondepleted mantle, suggesting a transitional continental magmatic arc provenance. This change in provenance is attributed to the Paleocene (65–55 Ma) collision between the Afghan plate and an intraoceanic island arc not considered in previous tectonic reconstructions of the Sistan segment of the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic system.

    Description: We describe and summarize the geomorphology of fluvial terraces along the four major rivers draining the central, onshore Makran accretionary wedge in Iran, and describe uplifted marine terraces on the coast of this region. Thirty-five strath terraces at different sites were dated using in situ–produced cosmogenic 10 Be concentrations from surfaces and depth profiles. These new measurements reveal abandonment ages between ca. 15 and 380 ka. The age distribution allows determining the chronology of terrace levels and establishing regional correlations between two major regional levels. The geographically widespread correspondence suggests that these two levels result from a regional, climatically driven force. Systematic dating also provides evidence for time and spatial variations in incision rate, which enables distinguishing between a regionally uniform incision rate of 0.3–0.4 mm/a and higher local incision and/or uplift (~0.8 mm/a) rates. These spatial changes are consistent with where localized tectonic activity is recognized in the field. We also dated, using 14 C in shells, four uplifted marine terraces on the coast of the study area. Comparing incision rates derived from strath terraces (0.3 mm/a) with published uplift estimates from marine terraces (0.2 mm/a) reveals that fluvial rivers responded to a regional, long-term incision and surface uplift pattern. This rate reflects the tectonically steady state of the wedge on a regional scale. Locally high incision rates delineate active faults and folds, indicating that perfect steady state is unlikely on short length scales.
