    Description: Treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis is associated with immune reactivity to outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, and the major histocompatibility complex class II allele DRB1*0401. The immunodominant epitope of OspA for T helper cells was identified. A homology search revealed a peptide from human leukocyte function-associated antigen-1 (hLFA-1) as a candidate autoantigen. Individuals with treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis, but not other forms of arthritis, generated responses to OspA, hLFA-1, and their highly related peptide epitopes.     Description: The trophoblast cell lineage is essential for the survival of the mammalian embryo in utero. This lineage is specified before implantation into the uterus and is restricted to form the fetal portion of the placenta. A culture of mouse blastocysts or early postimplantation trophoblasts in the presence of fibroblast growth factor 4 (FGF4) permitted the isolation of permanent trophoblast stem cell lines.     Description: Legume plants host nitrogen-fixing endosymbiotic Rhizobium bacteria in root nodules. In Medicago truncatula, the bacteria undergo an irreversible (terminal) differentiation mediated by hitherto unidentified plant factors. We demonstrated that these factors are nodule-specific cysteine-rich (NCR) peptides that are targeted to the bacteria and enter the bacterial membrane and cytosol. Obstruction of NCR transport in the dnf1-1 signal peptidase mutant correlated with the absence of terminal bacterial differentiation. On the contrary, ectopic expression of NCRs in legumes devoid of NCRs or challenge of cultured rhizobia with peptides provoked symptoms of terminal differentiation.     Description: Soaring migrant birds exploit columns of rising air (thermals) to cover large distances with minimal energy. Using social information while locating thermals may benefit such birds, but examining collective movements in wild migrants has been a major challenge for researchers. We investigated the group movements of a flock of 27 naturally migrating juvenile white storks by using high-resolution GPS and accelerometers. Analyzing individual and group movements on multiple scales revealed that a small number of leaders navigated to and explored thermals, whereas followers benefited from their movements. Despite this benefit, followers often left thermals earlier and at lower height, and consequently they had to flap considerably more. Followers also migrated less far annually than did leaders. We provide insights into the interactions between freely flying social migrants and the costs and benefits of collective movement in natural populations.

    Description: The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission, during the second of its Deep Dip campaigns, made comprehensive measurements of martian thermosphere and ionosphere composition, structure, and variability at altitudes down to ~130 kilometers in the subsolar region. This altitude range contains the diffusively separated upper atmosphere just above the well-mixed atmosphere, the layer of peak extreme ultraviolet heating and primary reservoir for atmospheric escape. In situ measurements of the upper atmosphere reveal previously unmeasured populations of neutral and charged particles, the homopause altitude at approximately 130 kilometers, and an unexpected level of variability both on an orbit-to-orbit basis and within individual orbits.     Description: Coupling between the lower and upper atmosphere, combined with loss of gas from the upper atmosphere to space, likely contributed to the thin, cold, dry atmosphere of modern Mars. To help understand ongoing ion loss to space, the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft made comprehensive measurements of the Mars upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and interactions with the Sun and solar wind during an interplanetary coronal mass ejection impact in March 2015. Responses include changes in the bow shock and magnetosheath, formation of widespread diffuse aurora, and enhancement of pick-up ions. Observations and models both show an enhancement in escape rate of ions to space during the event.     Notes: Abstract. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the phenotypic coefficient of regression of weight gain on initial weight as a correction factor in genetic testing programmes. A correction factor is required in order to remove the biasing effect of variation in initial weight among genetic groups tested, on their weight gain. In a genetic testing programme, involving common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., the environmentally generated coefficient of regression of weight gain on initial weight was used as a correction factor. It was estimated with the aid of the‘multiple nursing technique'. In other genetic testing programmes, not accompanied by multiple nursing, the phenotypic regression coefficient of weight gain on initial weight was used as a correction factor. These factors were compared by computing a series of each coefficientfrom a data set, consisting of the results of 10 yearly experiments and including 21 different experimental treatments. The results of this analysis showed that the phenotypic regression coefficient generated unreliable and often inflated estimates of the correction factor, relative to the estimate generated from multiple nursing, which we regard as reliable. Adequate genetic testing programmes therefore need to be accompanied by multiple nursing, unless test progenies are stocked at identical weights.

    Notes: A method for mass production of triploid carp was developed by the cold treatment of eggs after fertilization. Triploidy was demonstrated by cytophotometry and chromosome preparation techniques. Of the haploid embryos, 100% showed morphological abnormalities and died soon after hatching. Haploid embryos of maternal and paternal origin occurring in the course of cold treatment were distinguished by using a genetic marker. Among morphologically normal larvae, the frequency of triploidy was 100%, and the viability of the triploid embryos, larvae and the juvenile fish did not differ from the diploid control. Sex differentiation started in the triploid fish, but was greatly retarded. Gonad size and the small number of growing oocytes suggest that most of the triploid individuals will be sterile. Triploid carp grew at the same rate as diploid controls in the laboratory test.

    Notes: DNA content and chromosome numbers were studied in gynogenetic and normal carp embryos. Gynogenetic embryos showed the haploid chromosome number; the occurrence of spontaneous diploidization was rare. Early cold shock treatment of the gynogenetic zygotes resulted in the retention of the second polar body producing a much higher proportion of normally developing viable larvae. The appearance of large numbers of aneuploid embryos in the cold-treated gynogenetic group is explained by the loss or breakdown of chromosomes that are caused in their turn by the absorbtion of the second polar body through the cold treatment.
