    Notizen: An enhanced solution strategy based on the SIMPLER algorithm is presented for low-Peclet-number mass transport calculations with applications in low-pressure material processing. The accurate solution of highly diffusive flows requires boundary conditions that preserve specified chemical species mass fluxes. The implementation of such boundary conditions in the standard SIMPLER solution procedure leads to degraded convergence that scales with the Peclet number. Modifications to both the non-linear and linear parts of the solution algorithm remove the slow convergence problem. In particular, the linearized species transport equations must be implicitly coupled to the boundary condition equations and the combined system must be solved exactly at each non-linear iteration. The pressure correction boundary conditions are reformulated to ensure that continuity is preserved in each finite volume at each iteration. The boundary condition scaling problem is demonstrated with a simple linear model problem. The enhanced solution strategy is implemented in a baseline computer code that is used to solve the multicomponent Navier-Stokes equations on a generalized, multiple-block grid system. Accelerated convergence rates are demonstrated for several material-processing example problems. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: This paper presents an adaptive finite element method to solve forced convective heat transfer. Solutions are obtained in primitive variables using a high-order finite element approximation on unstructured grids. Two general-purpose error estimators are developed to analyse finite element solutions and to determine the characteristics of an improved mesh which is adaptively regenerated by the advancing front method. The adaptive methodology is validated on a problem with a known analytical solution. The methodology is then applied to heat transfer predictions for two cases of practical interest. Predictions of the Nusselt number compare well with measurements and constitute an improvement over previous results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notizen: A series of numerical experiments on the Cray XMP/48 and on the Cray 2 investigate the robustness and economy of direct and unsymmetric conjugate gradient (CG) type methods for the solution of matrix systems arising from a 3D FEM discretization of fluid flow problems. Computations on a Boussinesq flow model problem with either ILU preconditioned or unpreconditioned unsymmetric CG methods are presented. Such experiments seem to indicate that the unpreconditioned BICG method is robust for moderately non-linear incompressible Navier-Stokes FEM discretizations and that the ILU preconditioned BICG method is very robust and more economic than an unsymmetric frontal solver when the generous memory of the Cray 2 is exploited to store both the matrix and its preconditioner. We cover some of the programming aspects of direct and iterative methods on a supercomputer and find that direct methods have advantages: the crucial CPU-consuming area of code is compact but overwhelming, and its percentage of total CPU usage is independent of the spectral properties of the matrix involved. An optimal implementation of the unsymmetric CG method is more difficult because its work is related to the spectral distribution of the matrix considered and because there is no single portion of the code that overwhelmingly dominates the CPU usuage.

    Notizen: A one-dimensional transport test applied to some conventional advective Eulerian schemes shows that linear stability analyses do not guarantee the actual performances of these schemes. When adopting the Lagrangian approach, the main problem raised in the numerical treatment of advective terms is a problem of interpolation or restitution of the transported function shape from discrete data. Several interpolation methods are tested. Some of them give excellent results and these methods are then extended to multi-dimensional cases.The Lagrangian formulation of the advection term permits an easy solution to the Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables V, p, by a finite difference scheme, explicit in advection and implicit in diffusion.As an illustration steady state laminar flow behind a sudden enlargement is analysed using an upwind differencing scheme and a Lagrangian scheme. The importance of the choice of the advective scheme in computer programs for industrial application is clearly apparent in this example.

    Notizen: We present a simple and efficient finite element method to solve the Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables V, p. It uses (a) an explicit advection step, by upwind differencing. Improvement with regard to the classical upwind differencing scheme of the first order is realized by accurate calculation of the characteristic curve across several elements, and higher order interpolation; (b) an implicit diffusion step, avoiding any theoretical limitation on the time increment, and (c) determination of the pressure field by solving the Poisson equation. Two laminar flow calculations are presented and compared to available numerical and experimental results.

    Notizen: In this paper a penalty finite element solution method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations for two-dimensional incompressible flow is described. The performances of the Euler implicit (EI) and the Crank-Nicolson (CN) time integration methods are analysed. Special attention is payed to the undamped pressure oscillations which can occur when the Crank-Nicolson integration rule is used in combination with the penalty function method. Stability and convergence properties are illustrated by means of the computation of fully developed oscillating flow between two flat plates. Furthermore, the von Karman vortex street past a circular cylinder is computed to demonstrate the behaviour of the time integration schemes for a more complicated flow. It is concluded that the EI method has its advantages over the CN method with respect to the damping of numerical oscillations. However, for flows with an important convective contribution, where physically originated oscillations may be present, the CN method is preferable.

    Notizen: An agglomeration multigrid strategy is developed and implemented for the solution of three-dimensional steady viscous flows. The method enables convergence acceleration with minimal additional memory overhead and is completely automated in that it can deal with grids of arbitrary construction. The multigrid technique is validated by comparing the delivered convergence rates with those obtained by a previously developed overset-mesh multigrid approach and by demonstrating grid-independent convergence rates for aerodynamic problems on very large grids. Prospects for further increases in multigrid efficiency for high-Reynolds-number viscous flows on highly stretched meshes are discussed.
