    Description: The magnetic and transport properties of La 0.7 Sr 0.3 Mn 1−x CoxO 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) samples were systematically studied. A magnetic phase diagram was constructed according to the observed results. At the two ends (x ≤ 0.3 and x 〉 0.9), the samples exhibit the conventional ferromagnetism with the metallic conducting behavior, which can be interpreted in terms of the double exchange coupling between Mn (Co) ions.     Description: The magnetic and microwave absorption properties of the interstitial atom modified intermetallic compound Ce 2 Fe 17 N X have been investigated. The Ce 2 Fe 17 N X compound shows a planar anisotropy with saturation magnetization of 1088 kA/m at room temperature. The Ce 2 Fe 17 N X paraffin composite with a mass ratio of 1:1 exhibits a permeability of μ ′  = 2.7 at low frequency, together with a reflection loss of −26 dB at 6.9 GHz with a thickness of 1.5 mm and −60 dB at 2.2 GHz with a thickness of 4.0 mm. It was found that this composite increases the Snoek limit and exhibits both high working frequency and permeability due to its high saturation magnetization and high ratio of the c-axis anisotropy field to the basal plane anisotropy field. Hence, it is possible that this composite can be used as a high-performance thin layer microwave absorber.

    Description: On 4 July 2005, many observatories around the world and in space observed the collision of Deep Impact with comet 9P/Tempel 1 or its aftermath. This was an unprecedented coordinated observational campaign.     Description: The motion of antiferromagnetic interfacial spins is investigated through the temperature evolution of training effect in a Co/CoO film with in-plane biaxial anisotropy. Significant differences in the training effect and its temperature dependence are observed in the magnetic easy axis and hard axis (HA) and ascribed to the different motion modes of antiferromagnetic interfacial spins, the collective spin cluster rotation (CSR) and the single spin reversal (SSR), caused by different magnetization reversal modes of ferromagnetic layer. These motion modes of antiferromagnetic spins are successfully separated using a combination of an exponential function and a classic n −1/2 function. A larger CSR to SSR ratio and a shorter lifetime of CSR found in the HA indicates that the domain rotation in the ferromagnetic layer tends to activate and accelerate a CSR mode in the antiferromagnetic spins.

    Description: When subjected to a temperature gradient, the liquid film formed on a particle surface in near-critical vapor may undergo osmotic flow. Such a flow can induce a normal vapor flux onto (away from) the particle surface to compensate the loss (release the excess) of liquid as a result of condensation (evaporation) and produce significant thermophoretic mobility due to the extreme fluid compressibility during the phase change. Based on this principle, we have formulated this unique process and solved for the phoretic mobility by applying the boundary layer method. Unlike the classic mechanisms, this term of phase transition-induced phoretic mobility scales reversely with particle size, which becomes dominant for nanoparticles.

    Description: The exchange bias effects in pulsed laser deposited CoO 1−δ /(NiFe,Fe) bilayers were investigated. An anomalously high blocking temperature (T B ) of 325 K was obtained for the as-deposited CoO 1−δ /ferromagnet bilayers, which is 33 K higher than the Néel temperature of the bulk CoO (T N  = 292 K). The amount of oxygen vacancies δ in the CoO 1−δ film can be controlled by a post-annealing treatment in the O 2 atmosphere. The T B of the CoO 1−δ /ferromagnet bilayers increases with an increasing δ from δ = 0 to δ = 0.16. Our results indicate that the high T B of CoO 1−δ /ferromagnet bilayers originates from the enhancement of the magnetic interaction in the CoO 1−δ layer owing to O 2− vacancies.

    Description: 〈p〉The reindeer is an Arctic species that exhibits distinctive biological characteristics, for which the underlying genetic basis remains largely unknown. We compared the genomes of reindeer against those of other ruminants and nonruminant mammals to reveal the genetic basis of light arrhythmicity, high vitamin D metabolic efficiency, the antler growth trait of females, and docility. We validate that two reindeer vitamin D metabolic genes (〈i〉CYP27B1〈/i〉 and 〈i〉POR〈/i〉) show signs of positive selection and exhibit higher catalytic activity than those of other ruminants. A mutation upstream of the reindeer 〈i〉CCND1〈/i〉 gene endows an extra functional binding motif of the androgen receptor and thereby may result in female antlers. Furthermore, a mutation (proline-1172-〉threonine) in reindeer PER2 results in loss of binding ability with CRY1, which may explain circadian arrhythmicity in reindeer.〈/p〉

    Description: A criterion is proposed to predict the transition from slip to twinning in the face-centered cubic (FCC) metals within the framework of the generalized stacking fault energy (GSFE) curves, which are calculated by using the full potential linearly augmented plane wave method incorporating local orbital based on density functional theory. The criterion is a function of the stacking fault energy, unstable stacking fault energy, and unstable twinning fault energy, which are obtained from the GSFE curves. Based on the competition between slip and twinning, a new parameter is proposed to rank the sequence of the twinnability for ten typical FCC metals. The ranking results are in good agreement with the experimental data available. Compared with the previous studies of heterogeneous nucleation of twin, it is found that the heterogeneous nucleation sites of twinning such as crack tip and grain boundary do not change the ranking sequence. It is suggested that the GSFE curve may be regarded as the dominant factor determining the twinnability of FCC metals.

    Description: Effect of Ba substitution on the multiferroic properties of non-epitaxially grown polycrystalline Bi 1−x Ba x FeO 3 (BBFO) films on refined Pt(111) electrode buffered glass substrates is studied. The structural analysis shows that a pure perovskite phase is present for BBFO films (x = 0.05-0.15), and (110) preferred orientation is developed for films with high x = 0.15. The grain size and surface roughness are reduced with increasing x. All studied BBFO films show desired ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties. The good ferroelectric properties with the remanent polarization (2P r ) of 36-70  μ C/cm 2 and electrical coercive field (E c ) of 318-570 kV/cm are attained. On the other hand, the substitution of Ba 2+ for Bi 3+ in the A site of the BFO crystal structure can effectively enhance the ferromagnetic properties with magnetization (M s ) of 9.4-13.9 emu/cm 3 and coercivity (H c ) of 1216-1380 Oe. The ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties and leakage behavior as functions of Ba content x are discussed.

    Description: Apoptosis is implicated in the generation and resolution of inflammation in response to bacterial pathogens. All bacterial pathogens produce lipoproteins (BLPs), which trigger the innate immune response. BLPs were found to induce apoptosis in THP-1 monocytic cells through human Toll-like receptor-2 (hTLR2). BLPs also initiated apoptosis in an epithelial cell line transfected with hTLR2. In addition, BLPs stimulated nuclear factor-kappaB, a transcriptional activator of multiple host defense genes, and activated the respiratory burst through hTLR2.
