Notes: Abstract The electrochemical oxidation of manganous ion to manganic ion in acetic acid may be efficiently carried out in a parallel plate undivided cell. Reduction of manganic ion to manganous ion at the cathode is a relatively inefficient reaction, allowing the formation of solutions of manganic ion as high as 0.05 mol dm−3, at greater than 80% current efficiency. The effects of the major variables have been evaluated.

Notes: Abstract The simple non-Fickian model for the substitutional diffusion of an impurity in a III-V semiconductor proposed by Zahari and Tuck assumes that both the impurity and host atoms diffuse by a vacancy mechanism. Here we give an asymptotic analysis of the governing pair of coupled partial differential equations, obtaining analytical solutions for the impurity and vacancy distributions in systems for which the impurity diffusivity is much greater than that of the vacancies. Two problems are considered. The first is that in which the impurity concentration is initially zero and a prescribed concentration is given at the surface. The second problem models the diffusion of ion implanted impurity, for which initial impurity and vacancy distributions are specified and a condition of zero impurity flux is assumed at the surface. Both leading order and correction terms are obtained and in each case the solution predicts the anomalous ‘double profiles’ often observed in III-V systems. The ‘ion-implantation analysis’ also displays the observed phenomenon of ‘uphill’ diffusion against the impurity gradient close to the surface.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The paper demonstrates the existence of singular stress layers in normal cross-sections of helically reinforced hollow cylinders. The material is assumed to be an ideal fibre-reinforced material. The theory is illustrated by its application to the problem of a linear elastic, balanced angle-ply cylinder which is ringclamped at both ends and subjected to internal pressure.

Notes: Abstract A substitutional-interstitial model for impurity diffusion in semi-conductors is discussed. In particular we consider a surface-source problem and obtain asymptotic solutions in the limit of the surface concentration of impurity being much greater than the equilibrium vacancy concentration. In the absence of vacancy generation, a double error function impurity curve is obtained. These double profiles reproduce some of the qualitative features of diffusion in many III–V semiconductor systems. We also discuss how vacancy generation modifies the analysis and show that in the limit of high vacancy generation, the problem becomes one of linear diffusion with the diffusion curves then being single error function complements.

Notes: Abstract We show that for a surjective endomorphism of a compact abelian group ergodicity is equivalent to a condition which impliesr-mixing for allr≧1, and we characterize such maps algebraically. This is then used in proving the ergodicity of an extensive class of endomorphisms of the binary sequence space. As a simple corollary it is found that one-dimensional linear cellular automata and the accumulator automata arer-mixing for allr≧1.

Notes: Abstract We show that all onto cellular automata defined on the binary sequence space are invariant with respect to the Haar measure, and that an extensive class of such maps (including many nonlinear ones) are strongly mixing with respect to the Haar measure.

Notes: Abstract Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) FTIR has been used to follow sol-gel synthesis kinetics for tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), ethanol, and water solutions yielding pure silicate materials. Aluminosilicates have also been made using TEOS:ethanol:water solutions doped with Al(III). Effective rate constants have been fitted to a kinetic model suggested by the literature for pure silicate materials. This model has been extended to include the effect of Al(III) on the rate constants. The effects of solution pH, temperature, and varying TEOS/Ethanol mole ratios have been investigated. Reliable effective rate constants for metal doped sol-gel solutions will lead to better control of the morphological and chemical properties of multi-component glass materials.

Notes: Abstract We study the discrete model for cooperation as expressed through the dynamics of the family of noninvertible planar maps (x, y) → (x exp(r(1 − x) + sy), y exp(r(1 − y) + sx)), with parameters r, s 〉 0. We prove that the map is proper in the open positive quadrant and describe its various stretching and folding actions. We determine conditions for a Hopf bifurcation — probably one of a cascade of double, quadruple, ... limit cycles, as a curve is followed in parameter space. For r 〉 s an approximating version of the map is dissipative and permanent in the positive quadrant. We include the results of an extensive computer simulation, including a bifurcation diagram (y vs. r, with s fixed) through which is cut a number of x−y phase-plane plots; (an r−y curve penetrates each plot like a thread through cards). These indicate a complex dynamical evolution for cooperation, from stable cycle to strange attractor. A general conclusion is that the benefit of cooperation can be relatively high average values at the cost of oscillations of high amplitude.
