    Description / Table of Contents: The Rest Potentials and the Cathodic Polarizations of Active Chrome and a Chrome Iron Alloy in Sulfuric AcidThe cathodic polarization curves and the rest potentials of active chrome and a chrome iron alloy (25,6 pct chrome) were measured in dependance of the pH-value of the electrolyte. The behavior of the rest potential deviates from that of the hydrogen electrode. By means of the factors α and β they can be explained for the deposition of hydrogen as well as for the dissolution of metal. The equation of the rest potential is \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm V}_{\rm o} = {\rm B} - \frac{{0,058}}{{2\,\alpha + \beta }} \cdot {\rm p}_{\rm H} $$\end{document} where B is a constant factor. The sum 2 α - β is usually greater than 1.In the range of the pH-values investigated the cathodic polarization curves of the deposition of hydrogen are parallel. The exchange currents calculated from the logarithmic representation of the polarization curves rise with increasing concentration of the acid and increasing content of chrome in the alloy. The evaluation of the experimental results was carried out according to theroretical principles which had been applied successfully before.
    Notes: An aktivem Chrom und einer Eisen Chrom-Legierung mit 25,6%; Cr wurden in Abhängigkeit vom pH-Wert die Ruhepotentiale gemessen und kathodische Polarisationskurven aufgenommen. Die Ruhepotentiale zeigen ein gegenüber der reversiblen Wasserstoffelektrode abweichendes Verhalten, das mit Hilfe der Durchtrittsfaktoren α und ß für die H2-Entwicklung und für die Metallauflösung gedeutet werden kann. Es gilt für das Ruhepotential \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm V}_{\rm o} = {\rm B} - \frac{{0,058}}{{2\,\alpha + \beta }} \cdot {\rm p}_{\rm H} $$\end{document} mit B =const. Die Summe 2α+β ist in der Regel 〉 1.Die kathodischen Polarisationskurven der H2-Entwicklung verlaufen im untersuchten pH-Bereich parallel. Die aus der logarithmischen Darstellung ermittelten Ausgleichsströme, die der Korrosion entsprechen, steigen mit wachsender Säure-konzentration und mit wachsendem Cr-Gehalt der Eisen-Chrom-Legierung stark an. Die Auswertung der Versuchsergebnisse erfolgte nach den in letzter Zeit mit gutem Erfolg verwendeten kinetischen Ansätze.

    Notes: Auf zwei Wegen wird 1.2-Aceton-5-methyl-glucose dargestellt und kristallisiert erhalten. 5-Methyl-glucose selbst kristallisiert nicht. Sie wird durch das schön kristallisierte Benzyl-phenylhydrazon, das Phenylosazon und Osotriazol charakterisiert. Im wesentlichen werden die Angaben L. v. Varghas über 5-Methyl-glucose bestätigt. Das 5-Methyl-glucose-osazon von E. E. Percival und E. G. V. Percival erweist sich als Irrtum, die daraus für die Struktur des Glucose-phenylosazons gezogenen Schlüsse sind unbegründet.

    Notes: It is shown theoretically that phase separation may arise in solutions of polyelectrolytes due to electrostatic interactions alone. Two models are considered thermodynamically. In both models the free energy is represented as the sum of an entropy of mixing term and an electrostatic free energy term, while the van der Waals attractions are neglected. In the one model, electrically charged rigid cylindrical rods are in solution with an equivalent amount of counterions but without additional electrolyte. The free electrical energy, in this case, is given by the expression of Lifson and Katchalsky. In the other model the solution contains two types of macroions of opposite charge. The macroions are flexible coils carrying a number of univalent charges, the charge density being sufficiently low. The electrical free energy in this case may be approximated by the Debye-Hückel expression. For both models, it is shown that the decrease in the electrical free energy in a phase separation can, at given temperature and pressure, more than compensate for the increase in the entropy of mixing term. The effects of polymer concentration, dielectric constant, charge density, and salt content follow directly from the thermodynamic treatment of the models.

    Notes: From electron micrographs of clonal latices and centrifuge fractions, the particle size distributions in Hevea brasiliensis latices have been measured. By means of this investigation-which was meant to be informative only-it has been possible to ascertain that the highly asymmetric size frequency distributions that are apparently present result from the existence of several size fractions, which each itself has a normal Gaussian distribution. The particle sizes are found as being multiples of whole numbers of either of the two particle sizes 58 mμ and 69 mμ. A possible explanation of this phenomenon is that the larger particles form by clustering of the smaller particles in a grape-like arrangement, without actual coalescence or fusing together. From the experiments it may be supposed that the particle size distribution of latex may have an influence on its centrifuging qualities.

    Description / Table of Contents: Viscosimetric and osmometric measurements on fractionated Vinyon N (copolymer of 40% PAN and 60% PVC) are reported. Dimethylformamide is found to be a better solvent than acetone. The commercial product (unfractionated) has a Mn of 74000, therefore no shear dependent viscosity is found with dilute solutions. Rheological measurements make it probable, that molecular dispersion takes place in solution of 5% concentration. For the viscosity relation the following constants have been found (25°, c in g/100 ml): \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\left[ \eta \right] = 3,8 \cdot 10^{ - 5} \cdot \overline {\rm M} _{0{\rm sm}}^{0,92} } & {{\rm in dimethylformamide}} \\ {\left[ \eta \right] = 1,0 \cdot 10^{ - 4} \cdot \overline {\rm M} _{0{\rm sm}}^{0,83} } & {{\rm in acetone}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}
    Notes: Es werden viskosimetrische und osmometrische Messungen an fraktioniertem Vinyon N (Mischpolymerisat aus 40% PAN und 60% PVC) beschrieben. Es ergibt sich, daß Dimethylformamid ein besseres Lösungsmittel ist als Aceton. Das Handelsprodukt (unfraktioniert) hat ein Mn von 74000, daher tritt bei den verdünnten Lösungen auch keine Strukturviskosität auf. Rheologische Messungen machen wahrscheinlich, daß molekulare Dispersion bei etwa 5% Lösungen einsetzt. Für die Viskositätsbeziehung wurden die Konstanten gefunden (25° C, c in g/100 ml): \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\left[ \eta \right] = 3,8 \cdot 10^{ - 5} \cdot \overline {\rm M} _{0{\rm sm}}^{0,92} } & {{\rm in Dimethylformamid}} \\ {\left[ \eta \right] = 1,0 \cdot 10^{ - 4} \cdot \overline {\rm M} _{0{\rm sm}}^{0,83} } & {{\rm in Aceton}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}

    Notes: Die Struktur der Polyphosphide des Typs MePbP14 mit Me=Zn, Cd oder Hg wird mit Hilfe von PATTERSON-Analysen und FOURIER-Synthesen bestimmt. Je zwei zickzackförmig gebaute Phosphorketten lagern sich durch die Absättigung der dritten Valenzen der einen Hälfte der Atome zu einer -förmigen Rinne zusammen. Diese wird geschlossen zu einer fünfeckigen Röhre durch Die Me-Atome betätigen als koordinativ vierwertige Elemente noch zwei Nebenvalenzen zu Phosphoratomen benachbartliegender, röhrenförmiger Fadenmolekel. Der hochpolymere Charakter und der verwickelte Aufbau der Makromolekeln erklärt die gegenüber den Polysulfiden schwierigere Darstellung der Polyphosphide hohen Phosphorgehaltes, was dazu geführt hat, daß sie erst kürzlich gefunden wurden.
