Abstract Well-known general equations for behavior of inelastic bending elements are summarized and related to dimensionless stress-strain diagrams. Bending-element dimensional parameters are separated from moment, rotation and deflection coefficients, and the latter are presented mathematically and graphically in terms of dimensionless strain $$\left( {\varepsilon /\varepsilon _0 } \right)$$ . Application of these relationships to inelastic bending is illustrated, and experimental verification of their validity is presented. All theoretical and experimental results agree within 5 percent.
