Notes: Summary 1. It was shown that there are grounds for considering the possibility of the formation of a radical hydrogen bond between a peroxide radical and molecules with hydroxyl groups. The formation of such bonds under the conditions of an oxidation reaction should decrease the rate of chain propagation. 2. By means of inhibition during the course of the reaction, on the example of cyclohexanone oxidation, it was established experimentally that water has a retarding action on chain propagation and this confirms the formation of a hydrogen radical bond in this system.

Notes: Summary 1. In complex chain reactions involving the formation of molecular intermediate products, the composition of the radicals inevitably changes during the reaction due to the change in the composition of the products. A general solution was obtained in the present work for the problem of the change in the rate of a complex chain reaction due to a change in the composition of the radicals for the case of several active centers. 2. The appearance of more active radicals in the reaction mixture may increase the reaction rate by a limited factor, while the appearance of radicals of low activity may retard the chain reaction very strongly. 3. Radicals which react very slowly with each other accelerate the reaction by a limited factor, while radicals which react with each other rapidly may retard the reaction very strongly.

Notes: Summary 1. A new method is proposed for determining the activation energy of the chain propagation reaction in chain oxidation reactions with an initiator. 2. In the liquid-phase oxidation of acetone, the activation energy of the chain propagation reaction is 15–16 kcal/mole.

Notes: Summary 1. For decomposition and radical substitution reactions there is a linear relation between the logarithm of of the pre-exponent and the activation energy. 2. Tills relation was used for calculating the elementary rate constants of reactions of the type RO2+ RH. 3. A conclusion was drawn on the temperature inversion of the relative activity of substances for which this relation is fulfilled.

Notes: Summary 1. A study has been made of theoretical models of complex degenerate-branched chain reactions with successive conversions of four intermediate products from one to another with the participation of different sorts of free radicals. 2. The effect of individual factors (the activity of the radicals and their recombination constants) on the rate of accumulation of intermediate products in a complex chain process has been established.

Notes: Summary 1. Cyclohexanol and hydrogen peroxide have a synergistic effect onα-naphthylamine in oxidation reactions. In cyclohexanol medium 28 peroxy radicals are destroyed per molecule of inhibitor (120°), and in the presence of hydrogen peroxide 9 peroxy radicals are destroyed per molecule of inhibitor (85°). 2. The synergistic effect of cyclohexanol is preserved even when R. or RO. radicals react with the inhibitor. 3. In the process of oxidation of cyclohexanol a product is formed fromα-naphthylamine that has a strong inhibiting action. 4. Peroxy radicals react withα-naphthylamine by two routes: hydrogen atoms break away and “adhere” to the molecules of inhibitor. The ratios of the constants obtained characterize these two reactions.

Notes: Summary 1. Oxygen-containing compounds (alcohols, ketones, hydroperoxides) form hydrogen bonds with inhibitors of oxidation (α-naphthol, α naphthylamine) and lower their reactivity in the reaction with peroxide radicals. The inhibiting reaction of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone on the reaction of RO2 with α-naphthol and n-butanol, and that of cumyl hydroperoxide and cyclohexanone on the reaction of RO2 with α-naphthylamine is quantitatively characterized by the relative rate constants of the reaction and the equilibrium constants of hydrogen bond formation. 2. Data were obtained demonstrating the existence of two types of reactions of peroxide compounds with inhibitors — the reaction of stripping of a hydrogen atom from the inhibitor and the reaction of reversible addition of the peroxide radical to the inhibitor molecule. The ratios of the constants characterizing both reaction were calculated.

Notes: Summary 1. An attempt has been made to exploit the destructive properties of ionising radiations in overcoming the barriers to hybridisation that exist betweenBrassica oleracea, B. campestris andB. nigra. 2. One series of crosses involvingB. oleracea x B. nigra was successful only after irradiating the gametes or stylar tissues prior to crossing. After exposing female gametes, triploid, and after exposing male gametes, diploid progeny were produced. 3. An explanation of these results is sought in terms of a change in the relationship of embryo and maternal or endosperm tissues.
