Notes: A wide variety of polyesters and polyamides was prepared from 1,2- and 1,3-disubstituted cyclobutane derivatives. In general, polyamides containing the trans-disubstituted cyclobutane ring were crystalline. Polyesters containing predominantly the trans-isomer tended to be crystalline but those containing mixtures of cis-trans isomers were amorphous. Mechanical properties have been determined wherever possible. Appreciable yields of cyclic dimers were isolated during the preparation of certain polyesters. These cyclic dimers readily polymerized when treated with dibutylzinc. Examination of acrylonitrile dimer (1,2-dicyanocyclobutane) by gas chromatography failed to reveal the presence of any 1,3-dicyanocyclobutanes.

Notes: The mechanism of the catalyzed reaction between alcohols and isocyanates was investigated by means of NMR, infrared, and ultraviolet spectroscopy. The shift of the —OH proton resonance in the NMR spectra indicated the existence of a 1 : 1 complex in the system dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL)-1-methoxy-2-propanol. Complex formation was also observed when lead naphthenate or triethylamine (TEA) were substituted for the DBTDL. Mixtures of the DBTDL-TEA catalysts caused a shift of the —OH proton resonance greater than that observed for either catalyst alone. This correlates with the synergistic effect noted when preparing urethanes with a mixture of these catalysts. No direct evidence of alcohol-catalyst complex formation could be obtained by infrared spectroscopy. Efforts were also made to detect complex formation in mixtures of phenyl isocyanate and catalysts. These complexes could not be detected by NMR, infrared, or ultraviolet spectroscopy.

Notes: 60Co γ-irradiated 2-vinylnaphthalene was obsreved to post-polymerize in the solid phase. Plots of conversion versus time indicated a 14% limiting conversion of monomer to polymer. The post-polymerization was found to be first-order in monomer with an Arrhenius activation energy of 19.0 kcal./mole.

Notes: The polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl vinyl ether by six different catalyst systems was examined. Low-temperature studies (-78°C) with boron trifluoride etherate catalyst in hydrocarbon and chlorinated solvents slowly yielded low molecular weight polymers which were amorphous and noncrystallizable upon cold drawing. Under similar conditions, polymerizations with boron trifluoride gas were spontaneous, quantitative, and gave relatively high molecular weight, form-stable, amorphous polymer. Heterogeneous polymerizations with chromium trioxide crystals in toluene at 68°C and bulk reactions with ethylmagnesium bromide-carbon tetrachloride catalyst at 40°C failed to produce polymer. Room temperature runs with triisobutylaluminum-titanium tetrachloride catalyst gave amorphous, tacky material. Aluminum hexahydrosulfate heptahydrate (AHS) initiated polymerizations conducted at 25 and 60°C gave low yields of mixtures of amorphous and crystalline polymers, the ratio depending upon the polymerization solvent employed. The infrared spectra and x-ray diffraction intensity curves of crystalline and amorphous poly(trifluoroethyl vinyl ether) are reported and compared herein for the first time.
